SEC West stout? Because thats what I was comparing it to

Then in your mind, every coach we’re discussing plays in a weak conference because no division in the country compares to the SEC West. Also the AAC is better than the ACC and PAC 12 easily right now.

Fair point. I will admit that I dont know the ins and outs of the OSU roster that year. But I do remember there being a depleted roster

Still, 6-6 is pretty hard to overlook.

ACC maybe. 100% not as good as the PAC. Arizona St would beat every team in the AAC handily.

And Clemson would destroy most of the teams in the SEC. I’m sure the ACC drops off drastically beyond Clemson, but the SEC doesn’t look so stout without Bama.

I’m guessing the Joker is in support of Lane Kiffin.

I swear he was sporting a Kiffen avi some years ago.

There were some mitigating circumstances with that Ohio State team though... you don’t normally lose your coach and do great that year

This whole "Bielema 2.0" thing is silly. Know who else was a Midwesterner? Nick Saban. He made the jump to the south just fine. Why? Because he's a damn good coach and players want to play for damn good coaches.

You get the best coach available, IMO. If it's Fickell, great. If not, great. But the decision shouldn't be made based on where the guy comes from.

Speaking of Ohio (and this dovetails into the Fickell convo a little), if we are going to shite on Fickell because Butch Jones also coached at Cincinnati, we should all have Matt Campbell at the top of our list because he came through Toledo. As did both Nick Saban and Gary Pinkel.

I mean, since that's all the depth we need to go to on our evaluations it should be fine.

Fickell = no good because Butch Jones
Campbell = best ever because Nick Saban

There's been some damn good coaches to come out of Ohio.

Norvell, Leach, Kiffin, Fickel. Which one would have the largest recruiting disadvantage to deal with? I think it’s Fickel, and it’s not close. Followed by Norvel, Leach, then Kiffin. I worry the least about recruiting with Kiffin.

I don't know, man. I agree that Kiffin is gonna be the best recruiter in that list there. Especially if he can bring Pittman with him. But Fickell may be better at it than you'd think.

Here's a pretty thorough breakdown of his recruiting results at Cincinnati. Good article.

LINK

Out of the guys you listed I would most like to see Kiffin hired. But I'd still rather see Campbell than Kiffin.

Cincinnati is at #48 right now, and finished at #79 last year on 24/7. Obviously, you have to do something with them once signed, but recruiting would be a worry with Fickel for me. At least Norvell pulls a bunch of kids from MS to his program.

Sounds like a good enough reason to me. I'm gonna call Hunter Yurachek in the morning and advise him to save himself some time by crossing Fickell off his list.

Kids that larger schools have passed over.

What happens when he starts recruiting head-to-head against Nick Saban and Saban starts negatively recruiting him by dropping hints about womanizing and gambling?

I know those rumors are probably a spot for contention among some, and maybe the rumors are bullshite, but they're out there. And they'll be used against him.

He’s doing pretty well with them.

Well, I don’t know. But I hope he starts dropping hints about kids being processed and kids being used up and injured unnecessarily by Saban and company. I wouldn’t think it too difficult to sell Saban putting championships for himself and the university ahead of the well being and health of potential recruits.

People want to get dirty, get dirty with them. They treat you with respect, you do the same.

For every saban there is about 10 butch jones, Bert's, and joe mooreheads. There I just listed 3 northerners who came here and got killed without even having to think to hard about it. I bet I can find a few more in the last 7 years

Agreed. This is why I wouldn't hinge my decision to support a coach or not based on where they come from. For good or bad. It seems intellectually lazy.

I know what I wouldve said about that at 17.....

"REALLY? He gambles and bangs chicks?? Where do I sign?"

These kids are sending nudes in snapchat by the time they are 15 years old. Come on man. It aint 1960 anymore.

I'm not trying to base it on that. I am basing it on experience recruiting certain areas. Which he has florida, ohio, illinois, mich and wisc I believe. Wow sounds very similar to bert. We already learned that florida kids are not by and large coming here. So his pull there will be negligible. Secondly of all the names I have seen his offense is the most plodding, and least modern. Another similarity. He does not have the history norvell does of hiring coordinators who move on to bigger better jobs. He has not hired a staff close to what kiffin can bring.

I could keep going, but fickell should be our back up, back up option, and I mean behind names like clark, Harsin, mendenhall.
