It isn't hard to take an educated guess and say this is one of the best, if not the best, recruiting class assembled in the last dozen years on paper, as the class features 12 prospects ranked in the top-100, six of whom are top-50 and six heard their names called with the release of the Perfect Game All-American rosters this past summer. The class sits at 19 players right now from the prep ranks, and the Razorbacks are known to pick up some impactful JUCO pieces as well, so Head Coach Dave Van Horn and his staff will have an influx of high-end talent come next fall, though that's really nothing new in Fayetteville.

As always, there's no guarantee in everybody showing up on campus given the nature of the MLB Draft and a player's ability to sign out of high school unlike the other major sports, but given the sheer depth of this group, you can't help but be hopeful if you're a Razorback fan.

A pair of signees took home some of the biggest hardware from the 2022 Perfect Game All-American Classic this summer as top-ranked recruit Aidan Miller was tabbed as the Jackie Robinson National Player of the Year, while Ryder Helfrick's in-game performance helped him capture MVP honors of the prestigious event. Miller cemented himself as one of the top preps in this year's class with a consistent level of play across the board at all the major events, showing an excellent combo of bat speed and strength, which pairs well with an innate barrel feel and athletic actions at the hot corner. Like Miller, Helfrick packs a punch in his right-handed swing and has routinely proven his ability to square up high-level pitching, while his athleticism allows for versatility on defense, an always-coveted aspect of a player's game.

Shortstops Walker Martin and Nolan Souza, alongside, third baseman Nazzan Zanetello, catcher Ty Waid and center fielder Kendall George, all continued to elevate their status throughout the summer or fall circuits. Of this crop though, none enjoyed a louder fall than Waid, a physically-built right-handed stick who checks in as the No. 1 ranked player in the state of Arkansas thanks to his top-of-the-class power, and its proven ability to play at the highest of levels with a couple of long home runs at premier events. Martin, Souza and Zanetello bring an invaluable depth to the dirt with plenty of twitch to their overall profiles and levels of athleticism that'll allow them to vie for an impact role immediately. Add in that George is one of the fastest players in the country with a prototypical top-of-the-order skill set, and this class proves to truly have a little bit of everything.

The arms in this class who've inked their NLIs are just as impressive as the bats and make up more than half the class, with 10 of the 19 signees calling the mound their home. Right-handers Dylan Questad, Gabe Gaeckle and Barrett Kent were all members of the West team in the PGAAC and offer a nice mix of present stuff in their arsenal and pitchability to keep hitters off balance and pick up strikeouts by the handful, with Questad leading the way at No. 30 overall. Each of the arms in the aforementioned trio have bumped at least 96 mph with their fastballs and Adam Hachman's arm is just as electric as them all, only he does it from the left side with high-end metrics on everything that leaves his hand.

The depth of the class cannot be understated, and while there will be more than a couple names potentially lost to the draft, this class should still stand tall come next fall with whomever arrives on campus.

Walker Martin, SS, Eaton (Colo.)
Current Draft Board Rank: 53
Not a ton of draft prospects come out of the state of Colorado, but Martin may be one of the more exciting ones in recent history. The Arkansas commit possesses advanced bat speed that results in impressive exit velocity numbers. The power has shown up against quality arms already and will only continue to get better. Martin has shown enough athleticism to provide value on the dirt defensively. He will be an intriguing name to watch that should continue to climb up boards come spring time.

Ryder Helfrick, C/INF, Clayton Valley (Calif.)
Current Draft Board Rank: 117
I will be the first to say I’m bullish on Helfrick’s overall skill set. His athleticism and showing with the stick have really stood out. There are big tools at a premium position behind the dish, and he’s only improved his receiving with above-average strength that shows in game. It’s rare to see a catcher move so well with a consistent hit tool and serious jump off the barrel that coils well. There’s moving parts in his load, but it’s simply loud when squared and he seems to hit each look. There’s risk with a prep catcher in a deeper class than previous years. But he’s athletic enough to stick up the middle if catching isn’t a long term fit, and it’s hard to pass on such a versatile athlete with loud tools. Count me in.

11. Los Angeles Angels | Aidan Miller, 3B, JW Mitchell HS (Fla.)

The Angels were very aggressive with their first rounder in 2022, finishing Zach Neto’s year in AA, and it’s a system that could use some young, prep talent. Miller is among the best hitters on the high school side showing excellent strike zone discipline and some of the best bat speed and power in the class. Miller has had a really consistent time on the circuit since he was young and feels like one of the safer right-handed high school bats, even if he doesn’t stick at shortstop. -VC

Razorbacks Sign Nation’s Top Recruiting Class

quote:

For the first time in program history, Arkansas has landed the nation’s top-rated recruiting class.

The Razorbacks’ 2023 signing class is ranked No. 1 nationally by both Baseball America and Perfect Game. Previously, Arkansas’ highest-rated class was No. 2 by Perfect Game (2014) and No. 3 by Baseball America (2017 & 2020).

It is the seventh consecutive year that head coach Dave Van Horn, assisted by hitting coach/recruiting coordinator Nate Thompson and pitching coach Matt Hobbs, has brought in a top-10 class in Perfect Game’s recruiting rankings.

12 of Arkansas’ 20 signees are among Perfect Game’s top 100, an all-time high in the publication’s rankings history. Perfect Game’s recruiting class rankings began in 2011, according to its database.

“This year’s signing class is a testament to how hard our staff works on the recruiting trail,” Van Horn said. “Coach Thompson and Coach Hobbs spend a lot of days and nights on the road to find guys that fit our program. We want guys that want to get better, want to develop, and want to work extremely hard alongside highly motivated coaches and teammates. The future is bright for this group, and we’re excited to get them here.”

The Hogs’ 20-man recruiting class features 10 pitchers, eight position players and a pair of two-way players, all coming from the high school ranks. The signees hail from two countries – United States (19) and South Korea (1) – and represent 11 different states – Alabama (1), Arkansas (2), California (3), Colorado (1), Florida (1), Hawaii (1), Missouri (3), North Carolina (1), Oklahoma (2), Texas (2) and Wisconsin (2).

“Congratulations to all the members of our historic No. 1 ranked 2023 signing class,” Thompson said. “Excited doesn’t begin to describe how we, as a staff, feel about these young men choosing to make Arkansas their home. This is an extremely talented, competitive, and versatile group of position players and pitchers. They’ve performed at a very high level on the national stage and are hungry to make an immediate impact upon arrival in Fayetteville. We can’t wait to see them in Razorback uniforms competing under the bright lights of Baum-Walker Stadium!”

The Hogs have picked up another big commitment today.

LHP Hunter Dietz. He is yet another top 100 player in the 2023 class as he comes just outside of the top 50 on PG. He is also yet another commit to participate in the PG All-American game. He is a flip from South Florida. This 2023 class is absolutely ridiculous. We now have 13 top 100 commits in our 2023 class.

Mark Brissey | Batesville | SO

The Razorback commit got to watch and learn from current Hog hurler Gage Wood last season and that should pay great dividends for new Pioneer coach Tony Roepke. Brissey struck out 56 batters in only 36 innings of work last season. I expect the flame throwing righty to double his workload this season.

Don't know a lot about baseball recruiting, but I know you can lose people to the draft. Do we expect to get most of these folks on campus?

2023 Top 400 MLB Draft Prospects

LINK

Current 2023 Hog Signees

18. 3B Aidan Miller
quote:

Miller is one of the most physical preps in the 2023 class. He's big and athletic with explosive power that stems from a combination of raw strength and excellent bat speed. Miller is a consistent high-performer on the amateur circuit and his mammoth power finds it way into games already. He can run a fastball into the low-90s on the mound, but his future is likely swinging a bat. The body is already very thick and muscular, so he'll need to maintain his athleticism as he gets older. For now, it's comfortably a third base profile, with a corner outfield or first base role possible as he ages. A broken hamate bone de-railed his 2023 season, but the track record and production all throughout his prep career is too loud to ignore.

26. SS Walker Martin
quote:

Martin is a super-athletic, tooled-up, top-of-the-class performer with a lefty bat and a feel for the barrel. There's a lot of projection here, but the tools are already showing out in a loud way with top-of-the-class bat speed and a proficiency for exit velocities. Evaluators believe this will be at least above average raw power at its peak. Martin is a good athlete, though it doesn't specifically show up in his solid average run times. He moves well around the ball and has twitchiness in his game that should lend well toward him staying on the dirt. He's also among the better athletic testers in the class, suggesting there's more exciting development in front of him so long as the body doesn't grow out of its present explosivity. If there's one knock on Martin, he'll be 19 years old on draft day. That'll knock him on some model boards.

44. CF Kendall George
quote:

George is a burner on the basepaths and in the field. A true centerfielder in every sense of the word, George possesses strong instincts in the field an leadership qualities off the field. He's a slasher at the plate, and can seem overmatched by premium stuff at times, but scouts believe discipline and his ability to square up bigger velocity should come over time. George will need to hit more between now and July should he hope to go high in the draft, but if he ends up on campus, he has a chance to become a star a la Enrique Bradfield.

50. LHP Adam Hachman
quote:

Hachman offers one of the better fastballs in the entire prep class, especially as a left hander. Operating out of an over-the-top vertical arm slot with a ton of arm speed, the Razorbacks commit will live in the low-90s with arm side run and has touched 95 in the past. He's shown impressive feel for both a curveball and changeup that work well off of the fastball and miss a ton of barrels. Ton of projection left in his long-levered frame combined with high-level pitchability could see Hachman surge up boards this summer as profiles like this have done well in past drafts. Commanding the baseball with more consistency will be key toward determining where he fits in the draft.

109. 3B Nazzan Zanetello
quote:

Zanetello is a lean infielder with significant bat speed and gap-to-gap power, though most expect him to throw them over the fence in due time. He's a bouncy infielder with a strong first step and the potential to stay up the middle of the field on the dirt or out in centerfield. Zanetello is a good athlete who's an accomplished pitcher from the left side as well. A plus runner, he can nab a few bases in-game as well. Zanetello has been streaky at the plate with the hit tool, so impressing scouts in the spring will be important in determining his draft stock.

114. RHP Barrett Kent
quote:

Kent is exactly "what they look like." He's got the prototype frame with effortless athleticism and a buttery delivery that already showcases very real present stuff. Kent has been up to 96, but sits 92-93 on longer outings. Kent throws a slider and a changeup as well, though he loses the release point on both at times. Still, we're talking about definitive starter traits here and tremendous upside coming from premier clay.

163. C/OF Ryan Helfrick
quote:

Helfrick, tooled up future Arkansas Razorback offers immense upside on from both behind and at the plate. A strong, athletic frame that offers plenty of projectability remaining, Helfrick shows very strong hands and ability to get into his lower half creating huge power potential with the bat. Attacks velocity with intent to do damage. Presents some of the best pop times in the class with explosion out of the crouch and an above average arm behind it. Very athletic profile that should stick as a Catcher moving forward, but has the tools to stick in a corner as well.

171. LHP Hunter Dietz
quote:

Dietz is a highly physical lefty that has eating up hitters from both sides with a lethal fastball + slider combination. The heater sits around 90-94 MPH and will touch 95 on occasion, with big carrying life that plays big at the top of the zone. The slider sits in the 80-83 MPH range with strong gyro traits, which plays very well off the fastball profile. Rounding out the arsenal is a high spin changeup that flashes good fading life vs right handed hitters, but is sparsely thrown and confidence in the pitch is still developing. The big lefty works from a near overhead armslot that gives him that near perfect backspin on the four seam, but it's been a work in progress to control such a stressful delivery. The stuff has proven time and time again to play, so the ability to throw good strikes consistently is what will be monitored most moving closer to the 2023 draft.

183. SS Nolan Souza
quote:

Nolan Souza is the rare, premium prospect coming out of Hawaii. He's got a buttery smooth swing with elite-level hip separation, suggesting he's going to age into serious game power. He's already seriously impacting the baseball, but it could continue to develop more and more as he adds weight and physicality. Souza doesn't possess elite bat speed yet, but it's coming. He's a big boy and will almost certainly slide over to third base or a corner outfield role as he fully matures, but he moves well and could stick on the dirt longer than most anticipate. This is a pretty premium athlete with most of his upside still ahead of him.

210. RHP Dylan Questad
quote:

Fastball sits 93-96 in shorter outings, low-90s over prolonged starts. Heater features serious ride (up to 24" IVB) and run on a separate two-seamer. Curveball flashes hammer potential with great bite in the upper-70s, though command wavers. Flashed low-80's SL and mid-80's CH as well. Shorter, bulldog-esque frame with some effort suggests a bullpen role may be in his ultimate pro profile.

212. LHP Tucker Holland
quote:

Holland has seen a steady rise in his draft stock going back to his sophomore year. The fastball has been up to 95 with heavy boring sink, though he's generally 90-93 over long innings. The slider is the most interesting weapon, a mid-80s tilt that has been thrown to lefties and righties alike. Holland shows considerable feel for pitching and commanding the baseball. He'll throw plenty of strikes and, while he doesn't yet possess a third pitch, his current two pitch mix features interesting tunneling traits and more upside to come.

282. RHP Gabe Gaeckle
quote:

Gaeckle has shown the ability to sit 95-96, touching 97, unafraid to locate in on the hards to righties, armside. He'll brush em off the plate. Gaeckle's best pitch is a 3000 rpm breaker that he pitches front-door to righties and can locate it off the plate and bury to lefties to get punch outs. It's mostly a two-pitch arsenal right now, but the arm talent and operation on the mound are starter-quality. Gaeckle isn't the biggest guy in the world, and his body is already fairly maxed out muscle-wise, so skeptics may look at the frame and question where it goes from here, but the stuff is so *now* it's hard to argue with the upside.

387. C/1B Ty Waid
quote:

All Waid has done from the very beginning is blister baseballs at every single tournament or showcase he's ever attended. The kid just mashes and posted some of the gaudiest numbers of any high schooler in 2022. He'll split time between first base and catcher, though most believe he's destined for first base as he moves forward into higher levels of baseball. He's got the making of a potential plus hitter with plus power, though his athleticism and lack of versatility will be a hurdle he'll have to grapple with as he moves up the ladder. Still, you're buying the bat here and it's a good one.

J J Andrew (LRCA) made the max preps freshman all American team

Jacob Lainer (maumelle) has at least 10 D1 offers already including Ole miss tcu and Arizona state

Both 6'6 both guards.

I've seen lainer play twice he's IMHO going to be a top 50-75 guy. Pure shooter wing. A taller Isiah Joe
