Lots of theories out there that Hart is the Yellow King. Seems like a bit of a stretch to me but there is some evidence:
*SPOILERS*
His daughter's spiral drawing and the drawing of the dicks.
She arranged her dolls in a ritualistic way, 5 men standing around 1 woman.
Hart kills Ledoux before Ledoux ever sees his face.
He has a violent temper - beats up his girlfriend's lover, chokes Cohle, hits his daughter, etc.
His daughters are fighting over a crown when it gets stuck in the tree.
Hart means "deer" in old English.
The evidence shows me that his older daughter Audrey was exposed to the cult in some way as a child, whether it be participating or just seeing something she wasn't supposed to. Maybe the father in law is involved with the cult?

Cohle is working the case in his storage locker, that seems fairly obvious.
If Marty turns out to be the killer that ends up being the biggest WTF moment in TV history. Mindfrickingblown

Yeah it seems like a stretch to me. I saw people on reddit saying Hart's blond hair was like a yellow crown.

I was on the road this weekend and we had HBO in the hotel so i watched episodes 4 & 5. I need to go back and watch because I was lost as frick but those 2 episodes were fantastic. Unfortunately I don't get HBO so I can't watch them on demand so I need to go to one of those shady sites to watch them.

also, each and every word he's said to the detectives is inadmissable.
nice move asking for the booze.
as for the show, I never thought i'd see a show better than The Wire. BB got close. This one's on it's way.

I posted this on the TV board but it's brought up some good discussion so I'm bringing it here.
*SPOILERS*
The writer Nic Pizzolatto said if you rewatch the first episode that 85% of the story is there if you listen...
*SPOILERS*
quote:
Cohle knows more about the Dora Lange killing than anyone is aware of, including the audience.
1. In episode 1 when they first get to the crime scene, Cohle is describing the bruises on Dora's body and says, "She'd been on her back a while, before he moved her."
This struck me because we had just seen that it was in fact only one man moving her body and posing it on the tree and then setting the fire. Cohle seems immediately certain that it was one man, even though that's a big conclusion to jump to.
2. Later at the crime scene Cohle says, "This is gonna happen again, or it's happened before. Both."
This line is strikingly similar to what Ledoux says right before he dies in episode 5. How this was gonna happen again and he knows what happens next. It's funny because 2012 Cohle seems convinced that time is a flat circle. In that sense, Cohle would be right, that Dora Lange's murder has happened before and will happen again.

1. Cohle is a seasoned investigator and he knows that most murderers are male and act alone. Assuming that the killer is a "he" will be correct in most murder investigations, especially when you have a nude female victim.
2. The ritualistic nature of the crime scene would suggest to any investigator that the murder was not a crime of passion, and that the victim may not have known the killer. Most murders in which the killer and the victim had a personal relationship are very violent, and the killer tries to hide the body to avoid leaving evidence and being caught. In this case, the killer left the victim out in the open, either not caring that the body would be found, or wanting the body to be found. These facts all suggest that the killer has killed before and will kill again. One-time murderers tend not to pose crime scenes like that.
These two observations don't point to Cohle knowing more than we think he does, it points to him being an experienced investigator.

The line about how "this is gonna happen again" is word for word the same as what Ledoux says when they catch him. You think that's a coincidence?
Posted on 2/20/14 at 10:39 am to Stonehog
I don't, I think it was deliberately written that way, but not because Cohle is involved in the killings. Time = circle is obviously a theme in this show and I don't think it's meant to be a clue about the killer.

Yesterday I started reading The King in Yellow, which is a collection of short stories that were published just before the turn of the 20th century. As you might guess from its title, it's one of the major influences on this first season of True Detective. I'm hoping that reading it will help me understand and appreciate the show even more than I do.
Here's a link in case any of you want to read it:

edit: So far there have been repeated references to "the Yellow Sign" and I'm wondering if the spiral symbol is supposed to be the equivalent in True Detective. I don't yet understand the significance of the Yellow Sign, but that's the title of one of the short stories, so maybe there will be some insight there.

I heard that there's a play in the story that if you get past the first act, the listener/viewer goes insane, and that a lot of rust's philosophy comes from that play.
Don't know how it will all fit in, but sounds interesting.

"this is gonna happen again" is likely a reference to the crime itself. Its a somewhat common occurrence in today's society to have active serial killers and child abductors.
