How much do you guys feel hiring John L. Smith instead OC Garrick McGee or Paul Petrino is hurting your recruiting

I don't think it's hurting at all right now. All the kids we have committed except for one had offers before BP was fired.
It would probably be better with the top tier recruits obviously if we had a permanent head coach. I don't see us landing many 4*'s until we bring in a permanent guy. However, since we went the interim route and I am believing now that he was the best option. JLS was one of the coaches that recruits always commented on as being one of their favorite coaches they met while he was on the staff so I think he has been a great hire in terms of what you would get from an interim head coach in regards to recruiting. He definitely has a personality geared towards recruiting that's for sure which has been a big help so far.
McGee does as well so he would probably have helped out a lot and could still end up being the permanent hire. It just wasn't the right time to hire him in April for a variety of reasons. I think PP is a lot like his brother though and not one to blow people away on the recruiting trail. I think it was for the best to keep him as OC and get another year under his belt calling the plays. This way we can see how he does standing alone calling the true BP offense and then evaluate him as a potential head coach at the end of the season.

We aren't coming off back to back 10 win seasons and top 10 finishes.
I just asked an honest question.
If anyone other than John L. Smith was hired would recruiting be better?

Recruiting with JLS is on par with Petrino at the moment.

Tough to tell because we wouldn't be recruiting for the same system most likely. The only thing going against us is negative recruiting about how the staff may be gone next year. I'm not sure PP would be doing any better. Garrick probably would but he just has some stuff in his background that they couldn't bring on right after firing Bobby.
Anyone else would be a risk imo. I think we are doing the right thing here. It will be a solid class but not star studded. If we can get a good core of 15 or so 3*'s by the time the new coach comes in then you can have him go after the top tier recruits exclusively when he hits the ground. Hopefully we will be coming off another 10 win season and enthusiasm will be high.

tGrandpa is getting it done.
The reality was the caliber of coach we have to get wasn't available. The timing was beyond the worst. I think Long made the best move possible. JLS is a hell of a recruiter, the players love that guy, he's full of energy and he's old school. I don't think he's the guy to lead us into the future, we really want to keep the identity that BP built together. We want to be a pro style, that prepares players like none other for the NFL. We want to be a mecca for QB's and skill position players. We want to recruit coast to coast and internationally when warranted. We want to build a team that is full of athletes that are long, tall, fast, and strong that have a worker's mentality and a chip on their shoulder to grind and grind and grind and keep doing the dirty work without a lot of flash.
The coach that can best provide that to the university and the fans will be the guy hired.

Really its not that bad of a class so far. Once Harding gets rated on 247 it should put us at the #8 or 9 class in the SEC. With the addition of A&M that slots us right where we pretty much always were under both Nutt and Petrino.

This, though I do think this was going to be hisw breakthrough year in recruiting. I was expecting top 15 classes the next several years personally

Petrino wasn't a good recruiter and while I've heard good things about Paul I also heard good things about Petrino while he was here so no telling. McGee will be a good recruiter at a major university when he gets that big time head coaching gig. However can you really take him now since he just got that head coaching job? I'm not sure but it would have definitely killed his reputation and any integrity he has within the business. People forget sometimes that the worst part about the coaching carousel is that all the assistants families get royally screwed into a move because a HC got a better offer.

Domonique Alexander may commit soon. Would be huge towards keeping that Tulsa pipeline without McGee recruiting over there anymore.

Alexander said he got the good news about the offer Tuesday morning.
“It’s a great feeling because I’ve been wanting to go there since my freshman year, ” said Alexander, who reports six other offers, including Texas Tech, Indiana and Arkansas State. “So it’s like a dream come true to get that offer.”
He said a decision will likely come in a week or so.
“I’ll pray about it and talk to my parents and make sure they’re ok with it,” Alexander said. “After that, I’m probably go ahead and commit.”

Arkansas should hire Briles. That being said, I hope Arkansas doesn't hire Briles.

I'd definitely prefer him over Sumlin. :notracist: Why did y'all not pursue him again?

I wouldn't.
And I don't know. Probably because he's a whiny little bitch. A good coach, but he definitely hates A&M. Another reason yall would like him.

I know he is a great offensive coach but I hate the spread and bubble screens. Two things that are near and dear to him.

But he can recruit. And recruit well.
He's deeply rooted in Texas and, while I do get a kick out of it, there's no reason Arkansas isn't more relevant in recruiting, especially in Texas.
He's a character who your rivals would hate and you would love. His players love him.
Briles would kick serious arse in Fayetville. I'm not sure there's a better job for him to be honest.

He's probably the most realistic option of established coaches that are out there. Most of the names tossed around by our fanbase are never going to happen.

I hope Jeff Long was in Waco for the Supers and had a little informal meeting with Briles.

He was in Waco last night and I believe Briles was at the game as well.....

I definitely second this. He would get under LSU, Auburn, etc's skin quickly and has already gotten under ours. And high school coaches in Texas love him because he used to be one of them.
