What made the defense adjust?

I've wondered about the def Wommack put on the field at the beginning of the year...was it is defense or something he was told to run. Was this defense something Deboer believes in?
If so why the change? I believe it was after the OU game where I noticed we were beginning to transition to a traditional defense. Wondering what happened, did Kane go to Deboer and tell him it wasn't working, that he wasn't comfortable running that defense?

Thought it was what he ran at USA?
His dad is supposed to be some type of guru with it.

Wommack was running his defense from the beginning. I have no idea if they changed it up, or whose idea it was if they did.

It's Kane's defense not Deboers.
We played a lot of freshmen on defense this year. I think we improved some because we tightened up the back end rotations and the guys that were playing got more and more comfortable. I thought the front 7 really left a lot to be desired though for most of the season. Hubbard helped out a lot, having a guy at safety that can come down hill and tackle makes a world of difference

They've gone away from the 335 they played early and went to a more traditional defense. Haven't seen them play 3 down linemen on short and 1 lately.

Two things can be true at once:
- The defense improved as the year went on
- We played some pretty putrid offenses to close out the year

I'm not knocking the defense at all. Think they played well all year.
But down the stretch BAMA played a backup qb vs Missouri, Mercer, OU's qb with no WRs, barn, and Michigan's backup. Not exactly murderer's row. The LSU game was the outlier in that BAMA's defense dominated a capable qb.
Again, not trying to dismiss BAMA's performance, but some of that was who they played. Some of it.

True..I was more talking scheme than results. I like the fact they made adjustments when they saw things weren't working.

I think the opponent dictates adjustment more than anything. I think they attacked the line of scrimmage more against teams they thought had a qb that couldn't hurt them consistently.
I think situation dictates it, too. Like when they played man-free vs USC at the end of the game. It was panic more than anything in my opinion. At least in that game.

Even that wasn't something they did vs OU. Any improvement for any reason is a good sign at this point lol

Yeah. OU changing their offense completely for BAMA I think threw Wommack for a loop. It happens.
Dabo and Venables did the same thing in the national championship game vs BAMA. They changed their defense completely. Confused the shite out of Locksley.

Yeah. For sure. They should've played man-free vs OU all game and put all 11 up on the line of scrimmage. Especially in the 2nd half when they knew OU couldn't throw.

But still, even as badly as BAMA played in that game, if Milroe doesn't gift them 14 and the refs don't steal Williams' TD, that game is 10-10 in the 4th qtr.
If that's the case, I believe BAMA wins it.

I’d say getting dominated by Vandy made it adjust.

They may have made in game adjustments during the Vandy game but still used the same scheme during the OU game. It was at some point after the OU game that they went away from the 335..may not be permanent but I hope it is.

Yep I think that defense is gimmicky and works against bad teams. Physicality kills that defense

Was deleted but apparently the players didn't like him. There had to be some severe issues to let him go.
