Isaiah Bond mentioned during a Rose Bowl interview that Alabama had cautioned players against using personal tablets to review game film. Since then, it's been publicized that there's an ongoing NCAA (and maybe an FBI?) investigation into potential unauthorized access of game footage via tablets.
The way it was brought up by Bond implied to me that this was a recent deviation from Bama's routine. If that's the case, something strikes me as odd. Michigan players have stated in interviews (after Bond's statement was made) that Michigan stopped using their personal tablets for reviewing film in November, due to security concerns. How were they aware of it before we were?

During the investigating of Michigan's sign stealing, they claimed someone had hacked their system. That's when they stopped using the tablets. I figured they were making up crap to try to claim to be victims too.

Isn’t the system created by someone connected with OSU?

What I heard today is multiple coaches including UM has reported issues of being hacked this season. The company everyone has been using apparently is being looked into as many coaches believe the cloud they were provided may have been compromised. It allows the staff to put up film including practice footage for players to access and study anywhere.

Guess we are getting our own system for next year. Wonder what cool name it will have?

The company that owns the app that's being used, Catapult, says that there is no indication of their system being hacked. Not sure of an OSU connection, but some Michigan fans thinks the hacking is connected to OSU.

The actual statement was that they were investigating “unauthorized access” which could of course mean traditional hacking where a security flaw was found and exploited but given the statements of coaches and the company to me it suggests someone got hold of user credentials (either multiple sets or those of someone with administrative access) and dove right in. It could be really as simple as someone figuring out a pattern of user ids and/or default passwords and took to trying them to see who never changed theirs.

It’ would still be the same crime but more of a problem with user behavior and security policy than a technical issue.

I’d also like to know what the coaches are worried about because as I understand it each team uses the system to view film of their opponents so someone posing as an Alabama player wouldn’t be seeing video of Alabama. The only thing I can think of is if they also use it to attach notes and such. In that case, it would be a massive self-scouting help.

The issue is prior to the change by the staff the players received all the film including practice footage/notes via Catapult's cloud storage. The same cloud storage that is setup for many teams that can afford it. Each storage unit is supposed to be secured for each team, but investigations are looking into it being hacked and multiple teams being hacked.

The video showed break down of each player in practice and the plays we are running for the upcoming game. Via the cloud storage the players could watch it on their own tablets/computers wherever they were. Now they are required to come and watch via hard storage to eliminate the possibility of it being hacked.

Ok, that certainly clears up the reason for worry.
