The last athletic event of the 2023-24 season. Can’t believe it’s almost over,

quote:

The Alabama track and field program is set to compete at the NCAA Championships, June 5-8, at Oregon's Hayward Field.

The men's team will compete Wednesday and Friday, while the women's competition will be held Thursday and Saturday. Preliminary action on the track for the men's and women's competitions will be Wednesday and Thursday, respectively.

The Crimson Tide will open the meet Wednesday night (6:32 p.m. CT) in the men's 4x100-meter relays. The first podium event for Alabama will be the men's 10,000-meter run at 9:08 p.m.

Both Alabama programs will enter the national meet nationally ranked in the top 20, with the men sitting at No. 2 and the women at No. 16.

The highest outdoor finish in men’s program history!

Alabama sprinters Samuel Ogazi (400m) and Chris Robinson (400-meter hurdles) closed the third day of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships as national runner-ups in their respective events, as the Crimson Tide claimed a fourth-place team finish – its highest outdoor finish in program history.

Ogazi clocked a personal-best 44.52 in the 400-meter dash, taking silver, en route to a school-record-setting performance, outpacing his previous mark by one-hundredth of a second.

Robinson would follow up with a second-place finish of his own, clocking 47.98 in the 400-meter hurdles. Hurdles teammate Corde Long also reached the podium, finishing in sixth after crossing the line in 49.47.

Earlier in the evening, Tarsis Orogot finished fourth behind a 20.14 performance in the 200-meter dash.

The Crimson Tide men accumulated 32 points to secure its fourth-place finish, the highest outdoor finish in UA men's program history.

Track geek alert:

I watched a lot of it last night. It literally came down to the last event, the 4x400 relay. We were 8 points behind Auburn, 40 to 32. They did not have a team in the relay, so they could score no more.

We had run the fastest time in the country this year and could have/should have won it. They were nearly 4 seconds off their season best. If we run that best time from earlier or close, we win the relay, the 10 points and a national championship by 2 points over Auburn.

It definitely sucked. Not sure what knocked them off pace. I’m an old track guy and I’ve dreamed of Bama winning a national championship in my lifetime. This is the closest we’ve ever come. Gotta keep knocking on the door.

And with this post, I bid the 2023-24 sports season adieu. Thanks, Doris, for helping it end on a high note. Looking forward to seeing what the 2024-25 season has in store. Roll Tide!

Doris Lemngole Crowned National Champion on Final Day of NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships

The freshman phenom became the Crimson Tide’s first national champion in the 3,000-meter steeplechase after a record-setting performance
EUGENE, Ore. – Alabama distance runner Doris Lemngole closed the final day of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships as the national champion in the 3,000-meter steeplechase behind a record-setting performance to become the Crimson Tide's first champion in the event in school history.

Pulling away from the field on the final two laps, Lemngole ran a lifetime-best 9:15.24 to give the West Pokot County, Kenya, native the collegiate record, the meet record and the school record.

UA teammate Hilda Olemomoi concluded the final day as the national runner-up in the women's 5,000-meter clocking 15:10.04. The result gave Olemomoi two second-place finishes during the national meet, after first claiming silver in the 10,000-meter run Thursday night.

The Crimson Tide women finished the national championship tied for seventh, accumulating 26 points.

HEAD COACH DAN WATERS
"I'm very proud of Doris, she's now a national champion in the steeplechase and the collegiate record holder, as a freshman.

Overall, to bring home yet another top-10 finish at the NCAA Championships speaks to the standard we've established at Alabama. I'm proud of all our athletes and our coaching staff for the way they represented our program. I saw some great things. We learned quite a bit from where we were indoors to where we are today, we grew a lot as a team, a lot as a program, so I'm proud of that."

Bama's anchor on the 4x400 must not have been 100%. He looked pained from the get go. Everyone else looked smooth on the back stretch and he was gritting his teeth.

I was a walk on when Bama was runner up at indoor nationals more than 20 years ago. This year's team has a lot more depth than we did back then.
