The Alabama men's and women's track program opened the 2024 indoor season Thursday night with a resounding victory over in-state rival Auburn in the inaugural Harvey Glance Tide and Tigers Dual Meet, sweeping the men's (70-64) and women's (74-58) title.
The meet was highlighted by Ruben Banks who became the national leader in the weight throw after his 22.31-meter (73-2.50), personal-best launch on his fourth attempt, as the junior moved to No. 3 all-time in program history.
Before the action began, though, both schools set a rivalry aside and came together to honor one of the greatest sprinters from the state of Alabama – an Olympian, a mentor and a coach – Harvey Glance.
Alabama started the night with back-to-back wins in weight throw and pole vault on the women's side, featuring Crimson Tide career debuts for Chandler Hayden (21.31m | 69-11) and Mye'Joi Williams (18.37m | 60-3.25) as Hayden launched the third-farthest mark in program history behind a first-place finish. Milan Fields' victory in the 60-meter dash pushed the Tide out to a 24-19 lead in the women's team race before Williams stepped up in the shot put, launching the second-farthest throw in program history at 17.29 meters (50-10).
With five events still to be decided on the women's side, the Tide and the Tigers were tied at 43 points. From there, it was all Alabama. Miracle Ailes led the charge by securing a No. 6 UA all-time mark in the high jump (1.84m | 6-0.50), as Alabama had the title secured heading into the final 4x4 relay event, eventually securing the women's title by a 74-58 team score.
On the men's side, Jekovan Rhetta clocked a personal-best time of 6.66 to move to No. 9 in program history before Banks launched his national-leading mark in the weight throw. The UA men went back and forth all night with Auburn in the point-total race but kept fighting as the Tide racked up 11 straight top-two finishes heading into the 4x4 relay.
Leading Auburn 65-61, all Alabama needed to do was finish first and the title would be clinched. Without missing a beat, the Tide's 4x400-meter relay contingent of Jonathan Martin, Spencer Gudgel, Hasani Barr and Khaleb McRae rolled to a first-place finish to secure the team sweep in the inaugural dual meet.

Alabama Volleyball Welcomes Will Boyd as Assistant Coach
Boyd most recently served as the offensive coordinator and setters coach at the University of Louisiana
Alabama head volleyball coach Rashinda Reed has announced the hiring of a third assistant coach in Will Boyd, who most recently served as offensive coordinator and setters coach at the University of Louisiana.
"I am incredibly grateful for this opportunity to work at the University of Alabama," Boyd said. "Rashinda Reed, Matt Scott, Chelsi Carter and the team are establishing something special and I'm excited to be joining. As an Alabama native, it has been a goal of mine to come back home. To be starting this next chapter of my coaching career in Tuscaloosa is very exciting.
"I have been fortunate to know Rashinda over the years, as she was there at the start of my coaching career. I look forward to working with this staff and team! ROLL TIDE!"
This past season with the Ragin' Cajuns, Boyd oversaw and offense and setters group that finished second in the Sun Belt in assists (1,481, 12.45/set) with setter Siena DeCambra rankings third individually (1,165, 10.22/set). In 2022, Boyd was a volunteer assistant at Texas State, earning a Sun Belt West Division title with the Bobcats behind a team featuring the SBC Offensive Player of the Year, Setter of the Year and Player of the Year.
Additional coaching stints in the Lone Star State include West Texas A&M (2019-20), making an NCAA DII Tournament appearance and mentoring the conference's Freshman of the Year, and a 2018 season with Texas that saw a Big 12 Championship, an Elite Eight appearance and a No. 5 finish in that season's final AVCA rankings.
Boyd started his coaching career in the state of Alabama at UAB in 2015, alongside Reed who was an assistant coach with the Blazers. Following that, Boyd made the nearby move to Samford (2016-17), helping guide the Bulldogs to a 2016 Southern Conference title and NCAA Tournament appearance.
Boyd is a 2015 graduate of the University of Montevallo. He joins a staff that includes Head Coach Rashinda Reed, Associate Head Coach Matt Scott and Assistant Coach Chelsi Carter, all heading into their third seasons with the Crimson Tide in 2024.

In total, Alabama would grab nine event titles, 35 top-10 finishes and three event sweeps while in Clemson, in addition to eight different athletes adjusting UA's all-time top-10 lists.
HEAD COACH DAN WATERS
"To have top-five and top-10 finishes in every event we competed in speaks directly to the work our student-athletes and staff have put in this season. We posted several PRs this weekend along with a pair of school records. Mye'Joi (Williams) extended our women's shot put record, while Oussama (El Bouchayby) bettered our 600-meter mark with a historic and global time. Overall, it was a great weekend, and we will continue to build off the momentum we established here at Clemson."
