Alabama's Kensey McMahon Earns Another Spot on the USA Open Water National Team

The two-time Crimson Tide NCAA champion placed sixth in the 10,000 meters, once again earning a spot on the United States National Team

SARASOTA, Fla. – Alabama swimming and diving NCAA champion Kensey McMahon earned her second consecutive top-10 finish in the 10,000-meter race at the United States Open Water Championships in Sarasota, Fla., Friday.

McMahon, who won two titles at last month's NCAA Championships, finished sixth, overall, and fifth among Americans in the 10k event. With her finish, McMahon once again earned a place on the U.S. Open Water National Team.

In December, the Crimson Tide distance ace earned a bronze medal in the 1,500-meter freestyle at the 2022 FINA World Short Course Championships.

Kensey McMahon Said
"I'm super excited to have earned a USA National Team roster spot in today's 10k. It was a competitive field, and I gave it everything I had. I'm always grateful for opportunities to represent Alabama and the stars and stripes and look forward to gaining some more international experience with Team USA this next year."

Alabama’s Taylor Gorum Breaks School Record, Bobby Colantonio Jr. Claims Event Title in Final Home Competition of Career

Gorum became the second Crimson Tide student-athlete in six days to break the UA record in the women’s hammer throw

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – On the opening day of the Crimson Tide Invitational, Alabama track and field's Taylor Gorum broke the school record in the women's hammer throw, while Bobby Colantonio Jr. won the men's hammer invite in his final home competition of his standout career.

The Crimson Tide began its home meet with the women's hammer invite as Taylor Gorum (third | 65.84m | 216-0), Samantha Kunza (fourth | 64.90m | 212-11) and Chelsea Igberaese (fifth | 64.26m | 210-10) each placed among the top five, collegiately. The event was highlighted by Gorum's school-record-breaking performance.

It is now the second time in six days, and the second consecutive meet, that the record has fallen, as Kunza originally set the new standard last Saturday, April 15.

The men's hammer throw events would round out the first day in Tuscaloosa. For the final time of his career competing at the Sam Bailey Track and Field Stadium, Colantonio Jr. took home Alabama's first event win of the day. The reigning SEC individual champion needed only his second throw to seal the victory after launching a 69.26-meter (227-3) mark.

Following Gorum's performance Friday afternoon, it is now the seventh time this outdoor season alone that an Alabama school record has fallen.

Sixty-three Alabama student-athletes will compete during the final day of the home meet. Gorum and Igberaese will kickstart the action for Alabama in the women's discus throw, starting at 11 a.m. CT.

The Alabama track and field program claimed seven different event titles on the final day of the Crimson Tide Invitational.

Chelsea Igberaese and Taylor Gorum got Alabama rolling early as the duo posted two top-three finishes in the women's discus. Igberaese's first throw of the event (55.14m | 180-11) secured the Tide its first victory of the day and also moved her to No. 4 on Alabama's all-time list. Gorum's 53.42-meter throw (175-3) earned her a third-place finish.

Later, Alabama's 4x100-meter relay group (Jekovan Rhetta, Antonio Crisco, Clayton Elder, Jonathan Martin) clocked a first-place finish before Na'Taja Ballard also found success on the familiar track, securing the event win in the women's 400 meters.

In his outdoor season debut, Christian Edwards became the Crimson Tide's fourth event champion of the day. The reigning SEC Indoor silver medalist needed only his first jump to, ultimately, secure the men's triple jump title.

Cordè Long (400-meter hurdles), Brady Barton (men's 1,500-meters) and the men's 4x400-meter relay squad (Chris Robinson, Cordè Long, Leander Forbes, Khaleb McRae) would each claim the final three wins on Saturday evening. It's now the third time this season that an Alabama student-athlete has won the men's 400-meter hurdle title.

On Saturday, the Crimson Tide welcomed home over 200 track and field alumni and also honored its 2023 senior class: Flomena Asekol, Bobby Colantonio Jr., Alan de Falchi, Chelsea Igberaese, Eliud Kipsang, Samantha Kunza, Talaya Lewis, Katie Lightfoot, Amara Obi, Hailey Poole, Jami Reed, Rich Saenz, Quincy Scott, Grady Shiflet, Matthew Weaver, Jacob Wiggers, Karmen Williams.

In total, Alabama racked up eight event titles and 27 top-five finishes during its home meet. Gorum also broke a school record (women's hammer throw), making it the seventh time this outdoor season alone that an Alabama school record has fallen.

I had 3 teammates from this school. They've been a good pipeline and I'm glad we're cementing it a little more.

Alabama Strikes Gold on Opening Day of SEC Track and Field Outdoor Championships

Distance runner Victor Kiprop claimed his second-straight, and UA’s sixth-straight, gold medal in the men’s 10,000-meter run

BATON ROUGE, La. – Distance runner Victor Kiprop closed the opening day of the Southeastern Conference Outdoor Championships in style for the Alabama track and field program, striking gold in the men's 10,000-meter run (29:58.43). It's now the second-straight season that Kiprop has won the individual, event title and the sixth-straight season that an Alabama runner has won the event.

Bobby Colantonio Jr. kick-started the meet for the Crimson Tide with a bronze-medal finish in the men's hammer throw (69.96m | 229-06). In his SEC outdoor curtain call, the Barrington, R.I., native secured the Crimson Tide's first medal of the day with his fifth throw out of six attempts.

Chelsea Igberaese (65.10m | 213-07) and Samantha Kunza (63.19m | 207-03) earned Alabama's first points of the meet for the women's program with fourth-and-sixth-place finishes, respectively, in the women's hammer. Igberaese also recorded a PR en route to her top-five placement.

Once the sun went down on the opening day, the track athletes arrived. However, just as Tarsis Orogot and Jonathan Martin were set to run in the second heat of the men's 200-meter prelims, the meet was briefly suspended due to lightning in the area. Half an hour later, once the delay was over, Orogot responded by winning the heat via a PR-breaking performance (20.18) to secure his spot in Saturday night's final.

Chris Robinson (49.25) and Corde Long (49.32) followed suit, claiming the top-two spots in the opening, preliminary heat of the men's 400-meter hurdles, effectively claiming their spots in the event final on Saturday night.

Alabama closed the first day with the men in second place in the team standings with 17 points, while the women's squad sits in fifth with 12 points.

Disappointing finish for mens and womens track at SEC championships. Looks like 8th place for both. It’s the best conference in America for track just like most things. We should be knocking on the door occasionally at least.

On the final day of the Southeastern Conference Outdoor Championships, the Alabama track and field programs won eight event medals and broke school records in both the men's 400-meter hurdles, as well as the men's 4x400-meter relay.

Chris Robinson claimed the Crimson Tide's first silver medal of the conference meet (48.36) when he broke the UA school record for the third time this outdoor season in the men's 400-meter hurdles. Later in the night, Robinson would join Corde Long, Khaleb McRae and Tarsis Orogot in the men's 4x400-meter relay where the squad took second place (2:58.01) behind a school-record-breaking performance.

In the first event on the final day, thrower Alan de Falchi finished third in the men's discus. His 61.82-meter throw (202-10) earned him a bronze medal and marked the second-straight year that de Falchi reached the podium in the event.

Chelsea Igberaese would follow suit with a bronze of her own in the women's discus (57.97m | 190-2), making it the second consecutive year that Alabama has reached the podium in the event. Her PR-breaking throw is now the third-farthest mark in program history.

Around midafternoon, triple jumper Christian Edwards found himself in sixth place upon entering his final jump. Soaring to a season-best, 16.22-meter mark (53-2.75), the cardiac jumper would end his night by standing on the podium, in possession of a bronze medal.

Shortly after, the Bernie Moore Track Stadium experienced its second 30-minute lightning delay of the weekend. Upon competition resuming, Robinson ran his silver-medal-winning performance in the 400-meter hurdles. Orogot hit the track next for Alabama, in the 200-meter dash (20.34), as the owner of the famous headband and iconic crazy socks sprinted his way to another third-place finish for the Crimson Tide.

The final medals on the women's side came in the 5,000-meter run where Mercy Chelangat (15:25.07) and Hilda Olemomoi (15:28.12) finished second and third, respectively. It's now back-to-back championship meets (NCAA Indoor Championships | March 10 | 5,000m) that the duo has finished in the top-three of that event.

Alabama concluded the conference meet with the men finishing tied for seventh place and the women ending tied in eighth. Across the weekend, the Tide claimed 11 event medals, set a total of 14 PRs, broke two school records and made six edits to Alabama's all-time top-10 lists.
