Alabama Track & Field Set for NCAA Indoor Championships in Birmingham
The Crimson Tide gets competition underway at the 2022 NCAA Indoor Championships in Birmingham, Ala., at the Birmingham Crossplex
Alabama track and field is set to travel back to the Birmingham Crossplex in Birmingham, Ala., for the fourth and final time this season. The Crimson Tide is sending 11 athletes to compete in the 2022 NCAA Indoor Championships March 11-12.
The Tide is slated to compete in nine individual events and the men will race in the distance medley relay (DMR) during this weekend's NCAA Indoor Championships.
Bobby Colantonio Jr. and Chelsea Igberaese will compete in the men's and women's weight throw, respectively. Isaac Odugbesan will rep the Tide in the men's shot put. Emmanuel Ineh will compete in both the long and triple jumps. Mercy Chelangat will race both the 3,000 meters and 5,000 meters. Khaleb McRae will run in the 400 meters and Eliud Kipsang will compete in the mile.
Hillary Cheruiyot, Jace Jones, Kipsang, Jacob Lamb, Leander Forbes and McRae make up the men's DMR pool.
Alabama Head Coach Dan Waters Said
"We've competed at the Birmingham Crossplex multiple times this season and we've actually gone up there and practiced a couple times, too. So, we kind of know how the track runs, we know how the warmup works and we know what the ring feels like and what the runways are all about. I think it gives us a slight homefield advantage and there is a true home field advantage in every sport, including track and field, so we feel like it does set us up well in terms of being comfortable and feeling like we know what's going on. We'll be competing on the big stage in our backyard. We're going to have a lot of friends and family in the stands and that will make our people feel relaxed and good."
The Schedule
*The entire meet will stream live on WatchESPN.com and the WatchESPN app
*The two-day championships start Friday, March 11 and concludes Saturday, March 12
Alabama starts day one of the championships at 4 p.m. CT with the men's mile, weight throw and long jump and finish with the women's 5,000 meters
*The Tide opens the championships second and final day with the final of the men's mile at 4 p.m. CT, and caps off the meet with the women's 3,000 meters at 8 p.m. CT

Alabama’s Bobby Colantonio Jr. Wins National Title on Day One of NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships
The junior earned the Crimson Tide’s first national title in the weight throw on day one of the indoor national championships at the Birmingham Crossplex
Six years ago, Alabama's Bobby Colantonio Jr. was diagnosed with stage-four cancer. He was given a 20-percent chance of surviving and if he did survive it was likely he would lose a leg to amputation.
Friday night he stood atop the podium at the Birmingham Crossplex in the midst of the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, gold trophy held overhead, the national champion in the men weight throw.
Dreams of competing are what kept him going when he was down to a "skin and bones" 185 pounds on a 6-4 frame, going through aggressive chemotherapy and radiation treatment. They are what kept him going after he was deemed to be in remission and starting the decidedly uphill battle to return to the championship form he possessed before cancer.
On Friday night, the once again strapping Colantonio, all 6-4 and 265 pounds of him, launched big mark after big mark to dominate the weight throw competition and make those dreams come true on his way to becoming Alabama's first national champion in the event with a final throw of 23.60 meters.
"This is what I was dreaming of all the way through high school and when I got sick this is what I was striving to come back for," Colantonio said. "It's been an incredible, incredible journey."
And there he was at the end, standing on top of the podium with a gold trophy in his hand, his coaches, teammates and most importantly his family cheering him on, not just for tonight, but for the entire, utterly amazing journey.
Alabama Head Coach Dan Waters Said
"It's always special to win a national title and that's especially true with Bobby. When I think about everything he's overcome just to be able to compete again, much less stand on top of that podium as a national champion, it's a little overwhelming. Overall, we got some great performances today and we're looking forward to going out tomorrow, scrapping for every point, and finishing out our indoor season strong."
