Week 9: Swimming & Diving Athletes of the Week

Men's Swimmer of the Week: Derek Maas, Alabama
Alabama's Derek Maas, a junior from Holland, Mich., won three individual events against No. 19 Auburn. Maas swept the breaststroke events, finishing the 100 with a time of 53.44 and the 200 with a time of 1:59.30. He was also took the top spot in the 200 IM (1:47.77) and was a part of the first-place 200 medley relay (1:25.99/23.49).

Women's Co-Swimmers of the Week: Rhyan White, Alabama and Riley Gaines, Kentucky
Alabama's Rhyan White, a senior from Herriman, Utah, won three individual races in the win over No. 19 Auburn. White swept the backstroke events with a time of 53.09 in the 100 and a time of 1:54.93 in the 200. She also touched the wall first in the 100 fly with a time of 53.86, and was a member of the first-place 200 medley relay that posted the top team time of 1:38.45.

Women's Freshman of the Week: Avery Wiseman, Alabama
Alabama's Avery Wiseman, a freshman from Drayton Valley, Alberta, Canada, swept the breaststroke events in the win over No. 19 Auburn. Wiseman touched the wall first in the 100 breaststroke at 1:01.35 and in the 200 breaststroke at 2:11.43. She also finished fourth in the 200 IM (2:03.39) and was a part of the winning 200 medley relay (1:38.45).

Cowboys got the COVID

Alabama Men’s Tennis to Play at Ole Miss Saturday; Match Against Oklahoma State Canceled

The Alabama men's tennis home match against Oklahoma State, which was scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 22, has been canceled due to COVID-19 protocols within the Cowboys' program. The Crimson Tide will replace the matchup with a road trip to Oxford, Miss., to face Ole Miss, also originally slated to play Oklahoma State this weekend, at 3 p.m. CT at the William F. Galtney Indoor Tennis Center.

Saturday's head-to-head battle against the Rebels will be played as a non-conference match. The two teams will compete in league play on March 11 at the Alabama Tennis Stadium in Tuscaloosa.

Alabama Track and Field Set for Samford Invitational

Alabama track and field is set to travel back to the Birmingham Crossplex this Friday for the Samford Invitational. It will mark the Crimson Tide's third competition in Birmingham this season after opening 2022 with a pair of meets at the Crossplex last weekend.

More than a dozen schools are slated to take part in the meet, including Southeastern Conference rival Georgia, host Samford, Louisiana Tech, South Alabama, Tulane, UAB, Alcorn State, Bethune-Cookman, Savannah State, UT-Chattanooga, UT-Tyler and Wofford.

Friday's competition gets underway with the field events, starting with the men's and women's shot put at 9 a.m. CT. Competition continues throughout the day, coming to a close with the 4x400-meter relay at 6 p.m. CT. The running events will begin at 11 a.m. CT with the men's and women's 60 meters and move into longer distance runs starting at 1 p.m. CT.

Alabama Track and Field Breaks a School Record and Six Meet Records at Samford Invitational

The Alabama track and field team broke a school record and set six meet records at the Samford Invitational, held in the Birmingham Crossplex Friday in Birmingham, Ala..

Chelsea Igberaese bettered the school record in the women's weight throw for the second week in a row, picking up the win and setting a new meet record with a toss of 20.94 meters. Igberaese's effort was one of 11 Crimson Tide wins on the day.

Alabama Women’s Tennis Opens 2022 Season with Home Double Header

The Alabama women's tennis team opens the 2022 dual-match season on Sunday, Jan. 23, hosting Samford and Troy at the Roberta Alison Baumgardner Tennis Facility. The Crimson Tide hosts the Bulldogs at 11 a.m. CT, before going head-to-head against the Trojans at 4 p.m. CT.

Admission to all Alabama tennis matches is free.

Alabama Men’s and Women’s Swimming Earn CSCAA Scholar All-America Team Honors

Alabama men's and women's swimming & diving teams were honored as Scholar All-America Teams by the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) it was announced Tuesday. The Crimson Tide men and women posted GPAs of 3.55 and 3.53, respectively, to earn the honors.

"Coach (Mago) Geer is one of our sports' up-and-comers and you're seeing it here," CSCAA Executive Director Greg Earhart said. "These 62 men and women are some of the best ambassadors that Alabama and the SEC could ask for."

The Crimson Tide's latest honor came on the heels of another strong fall in the pool and the classroom. Alabama broke six school records during the fall and added 31 performances to its all time top-10 lists. Five current Tide swimmers and divers also competed internationally in the fall with Rhyan White and Kaique Alves bringing home a total of three medals from the FINA World Championships.

In the classroom, 14 members of the 2022 squad earned 4.0 GPAs in the fall, while 25 earned GPAs between a 3.5 and 3.9.

Alabama’s Filip Planinsek Named SEC Men’s Tennis Freshman of the Week

Alabama's Filip Planinsek opened the spring season strong, going undefeated in doubles and singles action to earn this season's first Southeastern Conference Men's Tennis Freshman of the Week honor, the league announced Wednesday.

Planinsek holds a 3-0 record in both doubles and singles, including an upset win against No. 18 Ole Miss' Finn Reynolds, who is ranked as the No. 44 singles player according to the ITA. Planinsek, ranked 83rd in singles, battled to take a come-from-behind victory, defeating Reynolds 4-6, 6-1, 6-4. Additionally, Planinsek secured a 6-3, 7-6 (4) win over Mercer's Lucas Wayenburg and a 4-6, 7-5, 6-0 win over Samford's Jim Hendrix.
