I’m saying college exposure doesn’t matter. The NBA is watching the Gleague every night. That’s all kids care about.

These kids crave money. If the NBA is pushing like this, then you know it’s serious.

Plus, let’s not forget the borderline kids that can leave college early now and be guaranteed a pretty hefty salary instead of grinding in college.

No telling what Petty could possibly make in the Gleague now.

I haven't heard anything about the g league increasing pay for borderline players like Petty, and idk why they would, those players aren't gonna draw anymore eyeballs. They are banking that a top 5 player like Jalen Green will, we will see, but I doubt it does. No one cares about the G league and I dont see that changing.

No way that it ever has near the popularity or the national following that college basketball does.

But these kids that are getting this top tier money would either be stars in college or busts. If they are busts in college, they will be busts in G league too. But at least if they are busts in college, they can get an education out of it. Bust out of G league and then what?

If you are a college star, you still get the education and the chance to get drafted which is much bigger money. If you don’t, the G league or overseas is still there. I don’t see the G league being a big threat.

Haven't you been saying that most good college players get paid anyway?

Yep. Do you not see the difference in getting paid to play pro ball and getting paid to play college ball? Especially if you're offered hundreds of thousands of dollars. Only Will Wade is paying that much for recruits.

You get a lot more exposure in college than you do in the G league. In college people you know, get to watch you play every night.

The NBA literally owns the G-League and NBA scouts and personnel executives watch all of their games.

As we see this year though, about 70% who were offered the G league contract chose college over the G league, and those are the 10 we know that they offered, they probably offered as many as 15, and 3 accepted, not a very high success rate for the g league this year.

They just started the program a year ago. If it is successful you are going to see a lot more guys go that route. Especially now that they removed the $125k cap.

No one cares about minor league baseball, but that’s been successful for the MLB.

If contract money has increased for the league, I’d say it would be beneficial for the borderline guys too. Especially, players with kids

Yeah but I dont see the minor league giving huge contracts to guys who are borderline good enough to make the mlb. Wouldn't make much business sense. It's not like these guys have anywhere else to go to play aside from maybe Japan.

Not sure why the g league would, guys like petty get like 35,000 a year in the g league.

If you get a 500,000 contract and bust out of the Gleague, then they can pay their own way through school. I’d rather bust out after making that kind of money than doing it before I make anything

The NBA has to pay salaries like that to keep these kids out of Europe and Australia. They’ll do what they have to do to keep the G league funded.

Based on what we know right now, I 100% agree.

Only one player got that offer that we know of though, Greg Brown got a high offer too, and we will see if he turns it down or not.

If they offered every top 20 player 500,000 then of course most of them go but I don;t think what they were offering guys like Burnett was close to that, it was probably 100,000 or lower.

Green was probably gonna go to Australia and play anyway before he got the G league offer and they didnt want that to happen. He had been going around wearing NBL shirts for a while now, which is the Australian basketball league that RJ Hampton went to. They don't want guys like Green going to Australia instead of the G league for sure and will offer those guys as much as they would make in Australia.

“Are we done recruiting for 2020?,” he said, repeating a media question. “We’re almost done. Look, I think we’ve got most of what we looked at. I think if there’s a no-brainer that pops up or if there’s just somebody that we’ve been heavily involved with — and again, you’re not allowed to comment on any kids until they sign, so I can’t comment on anybody outside of the five that we signed. But I would say we’re almost done, and if these are the five that we got, we’re ecstatic about the five that we got.”

Even with five newcomers, there has been some seismic movement on Alabama’s roster. Along with those five, Alabama currently returns seven players who saw game action last season: Kira Lewis, John Petty, Herb Jones, Jaden Shackelford, Alex Reese, Galin Smith and Javian Davis. Additionally, there are three players on the roster — point guard Jahvon Quinerly and forward James Rojas and Juwan Gary — who were on scholarship but did not play last season.

That is 15 players, even with the graduation of guard Beetle Bolden and the decision of two others, Raymond Hawkins and Jalyn Forbes — to enter the NCAA transfer portal. With an NCAA limit of 13 players, Alabama is awaiting the decisions of Lewis, Petty and Jones, all of whom are testing the NBA Draft process with the possibility of returning.

“I think they’re waiting on information,”Oats said of the three players with pending decisions. “Maybe everything’s slower just because there’s no workouts going on. Maybe it all got sped up initially because the season was over sooner than it should’ve been, but now, there’s just not a whole lot of new information. They’ve played all the games they’re going to play. They can’t work out for anybody. They’ve gotten all their background data or they’re still in the process of getting it. So, I think until we actually get a draft order from the NBA and a time when the draft’s going to be, it’s going to be hard to get a whole lot of new information.

“Kira’s leaning more towards being a first-round lock. But his family has got a decision to make, based on the information they’re getting. They’ve got to decide whether he’s staying or going. We want to do what’s best for each kid, and what’s best for each kid isn’t always the same for each kid. That’s more of a personal, family decision they’re going to have to make, and when they’re ready to make it, I think they’ll let everybody know what they decide to do.

“With Petty’s situation, I thought he had a really good year. I think he’s back on NBA teams’ radar. But first-round picks are guaranteed money; second-round picks are not. Some early second-round picks, they do give them guaranteed contracts. I think it’s one of those deals where if you’ve got guaranteed, you should probably go. If you don’t, in my opinion, you probably shouldn’t

“John and his mother are pretty smart people that, I think, will make a good decision. I don’t think they know what they’re doing yet. Honestly, I think they’ve got to get more data. And I’ve talked to Herb and his dad both. His dad’s a high school coach. They’re not going to make a dumb decision. I think we’ve got to give that a little bit more time.”

Exactly. It has taken a while but the NBA has finally gotten the G-League to a point where it's a legitimate developmental minor league. They are not going to give up a source of cheap talent, developed by their own employees, running systems that are similar to their own, to keep their rosters filled out and occasionally hit a jackpot.

They don't care if a guy like Petty goes to Australia or not though, the ones they don't want going overseas are the guys like RJ Hampton and Jalen Green.

They absolutely do care if a guy like Petty who is on the border between 2nd round and undrafted goes overseas. Those are the kind of guys NBA teams want on their G-League teams.
