I'm not arguing, just saying some of the 2020 players, if not all of them were offered the g league deal back in November when last season started. It didn't come about "late in the process". It's just now becoming public.

November was six months ago.

These guys have been recruited for multiple years now - that's why i'm saying late in the process.

Yeah the 125k to go back to school if the NBA doesn’t work out is the thing that’s gonna make a lot of these kids choose G-League. There is no downside to it IMO.

They just need to stay the frick away from JD Davidson

So right before the early signing period? Yeah, I'd call that late in the process.

Doesn't say when he was offered exactly, just that it was before he committed, which was 6 months ago.

The players in this class had plenty of time and opportunity to accept the offer if they wanted and only three did.

The would be ineligible to play bball in college if they went back of course.

Just for the general public, Rod Strickland has & will reach out to top players & their families about joining the G-League. He has increasingly attended a lot of events over the past few years. It’s the nature of his job. He just has better ammo to work with versus colleges now.

I dont see any upside to going to the g league over college unless you are desperate for money or hate school. I am a pretty big b-ball fan and I’ve never watched a g league game I assume most haven’t. Does the g league have a major tv contract that I don’t know about?

I think you’ll see maybe 5 players do it a year and those are the guys that would be getting paid to go to LSU or Memphis anyway.

What does a TV contract have to do with it? Green got $500k and there is plenty more waiting for him next year. That's a no brainer for him. College is a total waste of time if he can make that kind of money instead.

It's the same concept as minor league baseball and that has worked out pretty well for a lot of guys. G League actually sounds 10x better than the minors too

Yea, the G league don’t need TV contracts. The NBA keeps them rolling. I actually think the players get more experience in the Gleague as well. They are going up against a team of quality opponents every night. If you get a good G league offer, just take the money and go.

I’ve been thinking the same thing the past couple weeks. Folks could say the sky is blue and it would be met with a well actually post

How long is that $500k for? One year, two? Five? It’s not life changing money. It’s good money while it lasts but it’s not a slamdunk decision unless you need money. I think Zion would back me on this.

Haven't you been saying that most good college players get paid anyway? You get a lot more exposure in college than you do in the G league. In college people you know, get to watch you play every night.

As we see this year though, about 70% who were offered the G league contract chose college over the G league, and those are the 10 we know that they offered, they probably offered as many as 15, and 3 accepted, not a very high success rate for the g league this year.

I agree with you.

Players won't get near the exposure in the G league they get in college, espn doesn't show G league highlights every night. No one gives a shite about the G league.

Them getting 4 or 5 top 20 college recruits every year won't change that.

Where things got surprising however is that the G-League has now become a viable alternative for these kids. And there’s one reason for that: It’s that seemingly out of nowhere, the money has become a lot better than it was even a year ago. Or for that matter, just a few weeks ago.

Understand that it was almost two full years ago when the G-League first announced that they would start a “Select Program” for elite high school players. At the time they said that they would offer players who they felt were ready and capable of playing at that level a contract of around $125,000. The program never seriously picked up traction because of the dollar amount. While $125,000 is great money, especially for an 18-year-old kid, it just wasn’t enough. For elite high school players, there was too much risk and not enough gain to put your career and draft stock on the line for 125k.

What has changed however is that dollar amount. As Matt Jones reported (and others eventually confirmed), the G-League is now offering upwards of $500,000 to elite high school players. That money might not be “top of the lottery” kind of cash, but it is enough for some players to seriously consider that route as a legitimate option. Some, like Terrence Clarke still feel like it’s not enough to risk the uncertainty of playing against grown men. But it appears as though others are considering it.

So what changed in the money? Well, it’s hard to say, but if you follow the tea leaves, I can give you one guess: Adam Silver, the commissioner of the NBA, wasn’t happy seeing his best high school players go overseas last summer. After Hampton decided to go to Australia, he dropped a very interesting quote about the subject.

Does exposure matter more than this

9. How many NBA G League players have made it to the NBA?

To close the 2018-19 season, 52 percent players on end-of-season NBA rosters had NBA G League experience.

This group includes both players who were assigned from the NBA to the NBA G League and players who were called up from the NBA G League to the NBA at some point in their careers.

At least 30 NBA G League prospects have been called up to the NBA in each of the past eight seasons. A record 105 players were assigned to the NBA G League a total of 482 times in 2018-19.

Matter more than 52% of NBA players getting there from the G league and 48% being good enough to the NBA straight from college?

I don't understand what you are asking.

Are you saying that the G league is a better avenue to get to the NBA than going to somewhere like Duke or Kentucky?
