My expectations are realistic. Taking a team that was the first team out of the tournament, returning the best players, adding Bolden, Quinerly, Rojas, and our top 20 ranked recruiting class, and expecting them to make the tournament, even after the HC said he thinks the team will make the tournament are not at all unreal expectations.

Tell me this, what is Oats supposed to say? He has a room full of players that he's trying to build trust and a relationship with. Do you expect him to say, "we suck", "we'll be lucky to have a winning record because these players aren't very good"?? I mean damn, Oats is in between a rock and a hard place.
Also, don't short change the players we lost like Hall and Riley Norris. They were extremely important in those wins last season. Those are big shoes to fill

He wasn’t asked if he thinks his team is good enough to make the tournament and cornered for an answer said yes. He has volunteered at least twice without being asked that he thinks this team will make the tournament.
On paper we are at least a top 25 team in terms of talent, we underachieved because we hired a coach with no college coaching experience whatsoever and he did a horrible job.
A lot of you are underestimating our talent due to how poorly they were coached and how little was asked out of them. We have recruited very well the last few years and added more really solid pieces this offseason.

You're also thinking Oats can come down here and all of the sudden have guys making shots. Petty has been hot, maybe 6 times in 2 years. Kira fell apart at the end of the season. Reese and Smith are who they are. Then you mentioned a lot of guys who've never played in an Alabama jersey or in the SEC

Some of us think we'll make the tournament, but are perfectly capable of being reasonable if things don't go well for whatever reason in year one. Personally, I just think this team is plenty talented enough to have a good year, and learning a new system in basketball isn't like a DB trying to learn saban's defense.

And you are assuming that because we have had bad coaching the last few years that the players magically lost their talent from HS to college and are busts.
Avery Johnson even made Collin Sexton look pretty average most of the season.

So you think it's wrong to base them off of the previous games they played in an Alabama uniform, but we should instead, depend on a bunch of nobodies, that rate kids and hand out stars in high school.
The people judging our players on previous games are wrong, but you're right because a fat guy behind a desk gave kids four and five stars because they were better than most of the high school hacks they played against

Well said.

Aa I said, Avery Johnson made Collin Sexton look pretty average for most of the season. When players aren't pushed and not much are asked of them usually they underachieve.

I hope we make the tournament, but I don't believe we will. The only way I'll be disappointed in Oats is if we don't reach 14 wins. Oats needs his guy, and it will take time to get an entire team of them.

It was well said, but it isn't what you were saying. You said that it was a "bad look" for Oats if we don't make the tournament. That's not being realistic or fair

If you think those who expect us to make the tournament have unreal expectations then I wonder what you think of the national bball writer who ranked us 11th in his preseason poll a couple of weeks ago.
That was before we added Quinerly too.

We don't even have our schedule set, so ranking us is just dumb
It's June
He's a fricking idiot
We don't even know if he'll play this season

We have talent, yes it has under-preformed but John Petty is capable of playing the way he played vs Tennessee last year more often than he has. Same with Kira Lewis, he is capable of being a first team all SEC player. They have shown flashes of being the players we thought they would be when they signed here, they didn't lose their talent overnight. They need someone to push them similar to the way Saban and other good coaches across all sports do with their players.
Oats isn't gonna accept this lackadaisical effort and pat the players on the back and say good try when they lose the way Avery Johnson did, I know that. That's what I'm most excited about.
You could tell our players weren't even well conditioned the way we fell apart at the end of games and towards the end of each season, just unacceptable job by Avery.
As someone said earlier a lot of how we do next year will have to do with buy in, but if they do I think we will see a big improvement from what we saw this past season.

Avery didn't do his job and neither did Ponytail. These guys were robbed of coaching. I'm hoping for improvement and at least hustle and heart. We didn't show either way too many times last season.

Honestly the only result that will surprise me this season is complete implosion or winning the league. Anywhere between those two poles I can see as a possibility. Some more likely than others but any are possible. But for the first time since early Gottfried era, we have a competent staff and some good talent. If the two pieces can gel, we have tournament potential.
I wish the Battle for Atlantis was later in the season. I don’t think we’ll be ready for that level of competition yet. I’d like to see some of those teams in Feb. But what an opportunity to pad the resume’!

If oats can get the guys to consistently hustle and win the games that we are supposed to win and just not collapse at the end of the season, we should be sitting pretty good for the tournament.
I refuse to get excited though because there are just so many unknowns. Year 2 will be much easier to set expectations because we will be able to see what he's trying to do.

So your prediction is we don't make the tourney this year?
Posted on 6/8/19 at 8:46 pm to CrimsonFever
That's my prediction. I hope we make it, but I just don't think we will.

As Nate Oats said, if you aren’t comfortable with that after a couple of months, maybe you need to explore other options. I certainly wish Tevin well as he finishes his career.
