I just refuse to let myself get excited in year 1.
Refuse.
Refuse.

On paper, we will have one of the most talented backcourts in the country if Quinerly is eligible. Petty, Lewis, and Quinerly were all top 40 recruits and Bolden was one probably the best grad transfer guard on the market.
I know that Petty, Quinerly, and even Lewis haven't lived up to their recruiting ranking so far in college, but if they come close to it this year it could be a special season.

I don't blame you, Alabama Basketball has been like the twilight zone the last 10 or so years. Where talent goes to disappear.

Talent does, and we have some really talented guards. In much better shape than last year when AJ JR and Herb Jones had to play PG when Kira went out of the game.

Seriously though, Oats system is going to take time to adjust to.
Its not just sprinting down the court and firing up 3's. It's all based on quick decisions while playing incredibly fast, and it relies on 5 guys seeing the same thing and moving at warp speed based on seeing the same thing and making the same decision.
There is zero chance that happens immediately and because of that we aren't going to play super fast and smooth for a while, maybe not even all of year 1. It will take tons of reps for guys to get comfortable making those decisions quickly, and only when it becomes second nature will we run and play at the speed Oats wants.
Its not just getting in shape stamina wise, it's mentally being so comfortable you don't even think about stuff. That only comes with game experience.

I have no idea what the Depth Chart will look like if Oats really does go small, but by traditional positions, this is how I see it....
PG: Kira Lewis/Beetle Bolden
SG: Jahvon Quinerly/Jaden Shackelford
SF: John Petty/Jaylen Forbes
PF: James Rojas/Juwan Gary or Herb Jones
C: Raymond Hawkins/Alex Reese/Javian Fleming or Galin Smith
PG: Kira Lewis/Beetle Bolden
SG: Jahvon Quinerly/Jaden Shackelford
SF: John Petty/Jaylen Forbes
PF: James Rojas/Juwan Gary or Herb Jones
C: Raymond Hawkins/Alex Reese/Javian Fleming or Galin Smith

Not saying they’ll never see it, but starting? Nah.
It doesn’t really matter who’s starting though. It’s about minutes. And I could see all 3 getting 25+ minutes IF Quinerly gets the waiver and proves to be worthy of that kind of PT. And that last part is not exactly a guarantee.
My guess is Quinerly probably gets about 20 minutes as a backup while the other 2 start. This definitely would shift my lineup prediction in a big way.
1- Lewis
2- Bolden (guards the better of 1-2)
3- Petty
4- Jones (guards the best player 2-4)
5- Reese
6- Rojas (backup 3-5)
7- Quinerly (backup 1)
8- Shackelford (backup 1-3)
9- Gary (backup 3-4)
10- Smith (backup 5)
Don’t regularly play
Hawkins (praying he passes Smith, but Oats seems highest on Smith)
Davis-Fleming
Forbes

He was caught up in the FBI deal. They’re saying he could claim he was emotionally damaged due to false accusations and get a waiver

It will be an adjustment, but if Quinerly is eligible, having Lewis, Quinerly, and Bolden, three players who are great ball handlers who can push the ball up the floor is pretty much a wet dream for Nate Oats and the way he wants to play.
I think by conference play things could be going pretty smoothly.
If Quinerly isn't eligible I think we are one good ball handler short of playing the way Oats wants to play, maybe Shackleford could be that third guy.

As long as we cut back on turnovers, Shoot FTs better, and play smarter I will be happy with year 1.
I think our defense/rebounding will be what holds us back next year.

Not having AJ JR and Herb Jones as our 2nd and 3rd options at PG will cut down the turnovers a lot hopefully.

Absolutely
I just want to see us playing Oats style, getting after it and clearly improving and being molded into his image.
Mostly I just can't wait to see a team that plays fast and hard as shite for 60 minutes.

Amen, hopefully we are a much tougher team and play a lot harder. We were soft last year. Texas Tech was the toughest team last year no surprise they won the NC. Toughness is underrated in CBB, and its one of the main things Oats preaches and tries to instill.
