Does Oats accept a CBI invite if we miss the NIT just to use it for auditions? I say he won’t but you never know

We are already safely in the NIT field. We will be playing on the road though.

Then again, lose Thursday, Oats may say I can no longer coach or watch this, season over. On to roster shakeup.

Lose Thursday and I don’t think the NIT is a given at all. Especially if there are some upsets in smaller conference tournaments.

We are currently projected as the 18th team in out of 32 teams. A lot of shakeup would have to happen to knock us out.

I think Reese is gone. I think Smith is gone. I’m not sure about Davis. You can tell about Reese from the fact that Oats called him out after that game. He’s done. Cecil has also been pretty fed up with Reese. Not that it matters, but he normally hears things.

Wouldn't hurt my feelings, I would rather keep Reese than the other two. If Kira, Beetle, Hawkins, Smith, Davis, Reese, Forbes all left we would have to sign 7 players, 8 if Petty leaves, that's pretty unrealistic with it being so late and us only having one signed so far.

I think signing 5 is doable, maybe 6.

Speaking of bigs, ya’ll were talking before about Hawkins not getting playing time (which I’m also baffled by), and I don’t know if anyone brought up Cecil’s tweet from a few weeks ago that suggested walk-on Sam Okauru would get into the game before Hawkins.

Damn! Cecil bringing the cold hard truth! I guess Hawkins is gone then.

Here's my take on Reese. You can't play down low in D 1 if your first instinct on lightly contested rebound 2 feet from the basket is to pass the ball outside. Reese absolutely does not fit Oats system if he can't/won't take it to the hole.

Donta Hall being pressed back into duty in Detroit due to an injury probably increases the likelihood that he'll be signed by Detroit for the rest of the season after Wednesday. They can't sign him to another 10-day after Wednesday.

The question I have about Hawkins is how is he supposedly that bad? Oats was so high on him and had recruited him a long time

So Hawkins, Reese, Smith, and Davis are gonna be forced out ya'll think?

Would put us us with 0 bigs for next year. You need at least two big men to play as fast as we do for 40 minutes.

I do think we sign at least one.

Rojas + grad transfer. Maybe sign another JuCo kid. None of those guys need to be back next year. They aren't worth roster spots.

Yeah Rojas & either a grad transfer/juco or 2 should easily replace current inside weak links.
Need guys with inside toughness, mean streak, protecting our home court.

Rojas isn't a typical big man 6'8 215, for comparison Herb Jones is 6'7 205.

Reese, Galin and Davis are all around 6'9 245.

Hopefully he can gain 15 or so pounds and play the 5, that's what I've been hoping. I think he would be a better option there than anyone we have playing there this year.

Definitely a better option as Reese, Galin, Davis typically get outrebounded by guards.

He did play the a lot of 5 in Juco and played well there so he does have experience doing it. I think we recruited him to play the 4 but I could see him being moved to the 5 in some situations with how bad we are there.

At Buffalo Oats had the same big man all 4 years there, Nick Perkins who was 6’8 250 and could shoot threes but was still a really tough physical player. Im sure he will be trying to find someone similar in the portal. He was a pretty big dude.

Yeah Fever, a dude like Nick Perkins was that missing piece with a difference of many more wins.
That's what we desperately need plus another sharp shooter if Petty departs.

Cecil on Alabama Basketball 2020

quote:

Third, and this is critical: Alabama, and this goes beyond Oats, needs to recognize that it is teetering on the brink of an Ole Miss-like level of basketball relevance and are doing so in a worse facility than Ole Miss has. Yes, there are financial realities that will keep Coleman Coliseum from a well-earned destruction. Yes, there are “plans.” But it’s time for concrete plans about when the concrete will be poured.
