I think several players are showing some development already. Kira thrives in this scheme. Shackelford is really growing into a solid player and Davis was a very pleasant surprise.

He looks slow. I think he has really good potential though.

Javian looked really good and holy shite we are so depleted we got Tyler Barnes coming in to play meaningful minutes.
Shoutout to NCAA for that!

Even Barnes looked serviceable on the glass. I don’t think we can count on him for a double double but he got some boards for us even if it was FAU.

Didn’t matter today, but whoever is our bench guy in charge of keeping track of fouls needs to take his head out of his arse. Bolden fouling out that early is most definitely an oversight that needs to be corrected. Honestly, it’s kind of embarrassing that nobody on our staff caught that.

Also, Tyler Barnes had four rebounds in two minutes of play. Bola Olaniyan-esque.

This is very shallow analysis but I was sort of worried that Hawkins was just going to fall down when he started sprinting.

It’s pretty telling when Hawkins wasn’t on the floor before the walk-ons came in. Smith fouls out and Nate sent Davis (who was JUST subbed out) back in there in the final minutes of a blowout

Sad thing is, I honestly think that Barnes may be a better rebounder than Galin. It sounds laughable, and I don't have any ill will against him personally, but I truly believe it. About all Smith is good at is boxing out his man, but he rarely ever grabs a board that doesn't just fall into his hands.

We don’t have much room for error when it comes to injuries, that’s beyond obvious. On the other hand, it’s not like it’s unusual for good teams to only play 6-8 guys. At least 1-2 of Cal’s teams played 6 guys and that was it.

We can trust (to varying degrees): Kira, Shackleford, Bolden, Petty, Herb, Javian, Reese, and Galin. That’s a solid 8. We’ll have to develop Forbes, because injuries will happen.

But as far as playing rotations go, I don’t think it’s a big problem. We’re kind of just used to Avery wanting to play 10-11 guys every night. Our problems may just be a) injuries, b) our 6-8 guys aren’t good enough

Well, thank goodness for Davis. Truly the most impactful inside presence we got and it's not close. I wish Bama had called time out before the staters went out. I just wanted to see Petty dribble the ball inside one more time, just to see if he could actually do it.

But you have to factor in fatigue as Oats wants to play at breakneck speed. We need more than 8 bodies.

I too think Barnes should get some minutes if he can board like that.

Kira played 37 minutes tonight. I have to imagine had Beetle not fouled out he would have got some rest

I don't think oats is dumb, so I have to think they'll either stop Petty from trying to drive into traffic so much, or at least work with him to improve his ability doing it. He's had lots of assists though, so really, if he can just cut down on the turnovers, he'll be a solid contributor in all aspects. He'll have those games where he goes off scoring too.

It is what it is. We have 9 guys, 10 if you include Barnes. Either Oats is fine with that in regards to our pace or he’ll need to tone the pace down a bit.

looks like Buffalo had 9 guys that played in basically every game. 7 guys averaged over 10 minutes a game.

Yeah, even when he’s had good games, he’s never looked good doing it. Nothing about his game is smooth. He’s a big body with little athleticism and coordination.

Davis is like the Anti-Smith. Everything he does looks smooth. The best footwork I’ve seen from an Alabama big in my lifetime. That part was evident in his high school tape. This offense doesn’t cater to his scoring prowess, but he very easily could average double digits this year if he gets the minutes. His footwork works best in post-ups, but it also makes him a very good roll man as y’all saw tonight.

One thing really obvious about this kid is that he has never met a shot he didn't like. He's ready to pull the trigger on any open look he gets. You don't see that very often from true freshmen who aren't one and dones. It would explain why Oats seems to like him so much.

He definitely has that Erwin Dudley & Chuck Davis look to him. And if Javian can be even half as effective as either of those guys, I'll be happy. People forget how good Erwin Dudley was. He was SEC player of the year one season I believe.

I want to like Davis. If he can turn into a good rim runner and pick and pop guy then he can fit in this offense even without being able to post up much.
