Ty Simpson grew up some today. The Defense has great potential. My thoughts on today.

I could be wrong but I think two things happened to Ty out there.
He got hurt and it did affect his quickness and agility.
He got pressured and got a little panicked.
But there were plays he could have made. On one play he was pressured and the tight end was open and he sailed one five yards over his head. The next play he threw a quick pass to the flat that was a guaranteed loss.
But then, you have the 30 yard needle which i think won the game. He dialed that one in like he had ice water in his veins.
He can get shaken. And it was nice to see him fip the script and make a big time throw most can't make in the middle of a shaky time. A great quarterback never drags the last play into the current play. He'll stand in the pocket the play after the pocket gets blown up.
He's not always going to have all day. And we need him to stay cool. This was a great learning experience.
Regarding the defense, I heard Joe klatt and others taking about our hundredth ranked defense and Missouris top ten offense and just presume Missouri was going to run all over us.
BUT this isn't a weak defense. It isn't a slow defense. Its what I call a talented, quick, physical but shakey defense. They are going to frick up their reads and give up three or four big runs...but you are not going to out quick or over power them. Your going to get three or four big plays Affecting THREE OR FOUR SERIES. But these guys are not going to get trucked. Your not going to consistently run on them. Your drives will break down if you try.
And thats why our 100 ranked defense against the run was a bit of a mirage.
What i see is a high ceiling and great effort with a couple of big issues... right guard, running back, and some run defense errors. If we can figure those threw out and beat Tennessee next week, we might have a shot at this thing.

The defense played great outside of two drives. Of the offense could learn how to score TDs in the second half, it would take a ton of pressure off of them.

Ty was clearly rattled and a bit spooked, probably because the offensive line played terrible (overall).

That's what I'm saying. If a team runs for 200 on you but gets 140 in 4 plays and 60 for the rest of the game, that means a hellava lot of series where it's futile to run the ball. So most teams get suckered into relying on a running game that will kill most drives.
And the same thing applies to individual drives as well. We give up a high avg but with a high variance. I call it a long tail run defense.
