They use this procedure to stabilize the ankle, which allows players to return faster. That type injury could take several months to heal, but according to the doctors at Andrews, this makes the joint stable enough that they walk in 3-4 days, run by day 8-9, cut as soon as they feel comfortable, and can resume playing in as little as 3-4 weeks.

Stability shouldn't be a problem, but I suppose he could have lingering pain and inflammation that might make returning difficult.

Why do all those pictures show a cracked bone on the plate side? From my limited understanding, a high ankle sprain involves the ligaments of the ankle.
