If you had to list the ten best backs to play at Alabama since 1990, which ones would you put on the list?

Great thread idea.

stream of consciousness:
Trent, Mark, Shaun, Riddle, Coffee, Yeldon, Lacy, Darby, Lassic, Stacy, Sherman William, Shaud Williams, Upchurch, Grant.

Ranking:
1) Trent
2) Mark
3) Shaun
4) Sherman Williams
5) Lacy
6) Lassic
7) Yeldon
8) Shaud Williams
9) Stacy
10) Darby

Tough call. Hard to leave Riddle and Coffee off the top 10, but I think Yeldon's one year production and the potential he's shown warants him being there ahead of them. Obviously he's the only one on the list with a chance to keep moving up, too.

Nice list. I'd put Sherman on the list, but I'm not sure I'd put Lassic in over Coffee.

Should the lists be adjusted for their playcallers or the lines they played behind?

I think it would be a lot easier to rank them based on what they did on the field. Everyone talks about what Brodie Croyle would have done behind a better offensive line but, when it's all said and done, no one will ever know. All we do know is what he did.

As for me….I would rank our running backs like so:

1. Trent Richardson (2009-2011)
2. Mark Ingram (2008-2010)
3. Shaun Alexander (1996-1999)
4. Sherman Williams (1991-1994)
5. Eddie Lacy (2010-2012)
6. Siran Stacy (1988-1991)
7. Shaud Williams (2002-2003)
8. Kenneth Darby (2003-2006)
9. Glenn Coffee (2006-2008)
10. TJ Yeldon (2012-present)

True. I wish could see what Ahmaad Galloway could have done without the injuries, but we can't.

If we're just ranking them based on what they did on the field, a case could be made that Sherman should be ranked behind Lacy and Shaud, and maybe Coffee.

These are from their best years:

YDS / AVG / TD
Sherman
1341 / 4.6 / 8
738 / 4.4 / 9

Lacy
1322 / 6.5 / 17
674 / 7.1 / 7
406 / 7.3 / 6

Shaud Williams
1367 / 4.9 / 14
921 / 7.1 / 5

Coffee
1383 / 5.9 / 10
545 / 4.2 / 4

Don't know about the top 10, but if I had to pick only 2 RBs in Bama history to be on my team, it would be Trent and Shaun Alexander.

Lassic deserves special consideration based solely on his Fred Sanford heart attack touchdown celebration.

I agree with Coffee over Darby, but the stats were closer than I thought they would be.

Two best seasons:

Darby
1242 / 5.2 / 3
1062 / 4.8 / 8

Coffee
1383 / 5.9 / 10
545 / 4.2 / 4

Darby wins over Coffee because Darby rushed for a thousand yards (twice) behind two very sub-par offensive lines. The '08 line is second to the '12 line in terms of greatness.

In terms of sheer ability, Yeldon is a better running back than all of them. He has amazing agility for his size, has great vision, can break tackles at will, and is a good receiver coming out of the backfield. I won't be surprised if he has a LaDainian Tomlinson-type career in the NFL. He's that good.

Are we allowed to include NFL careers in this discussion?

If so, only one of those guys on everyone's lists was ever named nfl MVP.

I only had their college careers in mind when I made the OP.

I'm with you if we're adjusting the top 10 based on the lines they played behind now.

Itd be silly to try to rank Yeldon right now. Putting him at 7 or 5 etc doesnt do him justice because we dont know just how good he is right now. Heck he could end up being #1.

That said:
1)Alexander
2)Ingram
3)TR

Darby should get some love in this thread too. That guy ran behind some mediocre lines and with terrible coaching and still somehow was able to churn out yards.

I'm not sure I'd have Ingram in my top 4. Both Trent and Alexander are easily the top 2.
