Overall, I think more than anything we just lacked skill.

Couldn't agree more. Outside of Retin, the players that hit the floor for Bama this season weren't ready to be top flight players. Some may NEVER be. You could really see it when they faced a truly talented team like Kentucky. No matter how hard they tried, they just didn't have the horsepower. The fact that they succeeded as much as they did this season is a testament to CAJ's coaching and their work effort.

There's no reason to blow up the roster. Some of them could well become fantastic players. Hall in particular looks like he is on his way to becoming a dominating presence in the paint. He already is one on defense. Brandon Austin hustled and played some really good defense down the stretch. Riley Norris is never going to be a really dynamic playmaker, but he has a good outside shot, plays solid defense, and goes after every rebound like a man possessed. He reminds me a lot of Jim Farmer, who was one of my favorite players in the Wimp era.

In a nutshell, I'm still very much in the honeymoon phase. I think the future looks fantastic.

So, what should next year's OOC schedule look like?

I think we host Dayton next year do we not? They are going to have a really senior laden team next year with a lot of talent. Good news is I think Archie Miller is going somewhere else.

Think we travel to Oregon, Clemson comes here, and I believe someone mentioned that Texas and Bama are talking about a potential home-home series?

I'd like to see a schedule similar to this year. I think the mix was just right to build a good tourney resume. It is always something of a crap shoot with the mid-majors because you never know when that expected top 100 team will tank so adding a couple more reliably good teams (even if it means a road trip) like a Texas would be nice.

Don't get your hopes too high for next year, remember this is Alabama basketball. They are a average to bad basketball program and will remain that way unless Coach K or Calipari comes to T-Town.

That's just not true. At all.

Since 1975 (41 years) we have
- 20 NCAAT appearances (1 every 2 years)
- 8 Sweet 16 appearances (1 every 5 years)
- 1 Elite 8
- 5 SECT Championships
- 4 SEC Regular Season Championships

From 1982-2006 (24 years) we went to 17 NCAA Tournaments and 7 Sweet 16s.

We are not Kentucky or Duke, but we were a really solid basketball program from 1970-2006 almost without interruption (other than a few poor Hobbs years and the first year of Gottfried).

Since 2000 Bama has
1 SEC regular season title
0 SEC tournament titles
3 SEC West titles
6 NCAA tournament appearances
1 Sweet 16 appearance
1 Elite 8 appearance
8 20 win seasons

And has spent very little time in the Top 25 rankings.

They have won multiple SEC tournament games in one season only once. Same with the NCAA tournament.

From 82 to 92, Bama was at least a runner-up or champion of the SECT 8 times.

No reason for Bama to not be a solid basketball program.

I realize it might be hard for youngesters to believe, but the world in general and Alabama basketball in particular existed before the year 2000 and both were very good.

In fact, Bama basketball was very good when SEC basketball as a whole was a shite ton better than it is now. To sit there and say Bama basketball is historically a mediocre to bad program isn't just inaccurate, it is a damned lie.

We spent tons of time in the Top 25 from 2001 to 2007. Obviously we didn't in 2008-2009, because we fired Gottfried for it, and we didn't from 2010-2015 because we fired Grant.

Point is the overall history of the program is not "bad" at all.

Until Florida had all of that success with Donovan, we were traditionally, the second best team in the SEC.

So Bama had two good runs from 82-92 and 01-07. Other then that, they might have a good season every 3-4 years.
0 final fours
0 national championships
Average at best basketball tradition. I wouldn't even put them in the top half in the SEC when it comes to a winning tradition in basketball.

Alabama went 132-36 (79%) from 1972-1977 and finished ranked in the top 14 4 straight years from 1974-1977.

Alabama went 207-80 (72%) from 1972-1981

Hell, from 1993-2001 Alabama went 165-118 (58%)

This is silly.

Since 1972 (44 years)
- Alabama has had a 60%+ winning percentage 30 of 44 years
- Alabama has had a 70%+ winning percentage 13 of 44 years
- Alabama has won 20+ games 25 of 44 years
- Alabama has won 18+ games 34 of 44 years
- Alabama has had a winning record in 41 of 44 years
- Our 3 losing seasons since 1972 are :
* 1988 (14-17) Wimp's 8th year, went 28-5 year before and 23-8 year after
* 1998 (15-16) Hobbs' 6th year, he was fired for it
* 2014 (13-19) Grant's 5th year, he was fired 2 years later with this as the cornerstone of the reason why

We aren't Kentucky, but 75% of years we are somewhere around the NCAAT bubble or better, and we almost never have abysmal teams (which is why what Grant did his 2nd to last year was such a fireable offense in Year 5). If you want to see "bad", go look at Georgia, Ole Miss or Auburn's numbers over that span.

Bama just needs one or two runs to the final four to solidify themselves as a solid basketball program. If Miss State and Georgia can at least have one with half the success Bama has had, then there's no excuse.

Really think Avery can ( empathizing the word CAN, not saying he WILL, but he has potential) get us once he gets his recruits. Sucks we didn't get to see more of the offense he wants to run this year, but we should be competing more in the future.

It seemed that Alabama had so much NBA talent (mainly one NBA talented or at least ALL SEC big man after another) practically from the 70s until recently.

What happened?

Are there simply less guys coming from Alabama and Mississippi these days?

Or they going to play in other conferences?

Are they just much more "projects" due to early coaching / development?

George covered it pretty well except he called it silly. The more accurate term would be stupid. For a long time only conference champs went to the tourney and Bama happens to be in the same conference as Kentucky. They haven't had a couple of decent runs they have had a bad decade. Overall they are top 3 or 4 in the SEC.

Think there is still a good amount of talent in Alabama, they're just going elsewhere. Similar to how LSU was in the 90s for football.

Kentucky, Florida and Arkansas I know have national championships.
LSU, Georgia and Miss St all have final four appearances. I don't see how Bama is a top 3 or 4 program in the SEC. Alabama is a average middle of the pack basketball program.

Two of Bama's SEC Tournament titles came with Kentucky ineligible to play in the tournament.
