That ranking may not mean anything but I think he has potential.

He has incredible potential, like NBA athleticism, but he isn't/wasn't anywhere close to reaching it when he left OSU. You don't just find strong 6'11 guys who move like 6'7 SFs on every street corner

Part of the issue with these ultra athletic 6'10+ kids is that they've likely never needed anything but natural ability to dominate. Even if they took the initiative to develop a post game, they lack coaching + quality practice competition.

He's definitely got potential, but like Chin said he's pretty raw I think

Here he is in high school. LINK

It's good that he played at Oak Hill. Those guys generally seem well coached

So when you watch his highlights, like most big men in HS, he loves jumping high for the mega swat and he majority of his scorers are direct assist no dribble/move opportunities

1- Swatting is cool for highlights but fricks over your team.

If it doesn't change He will foul a metric duck ton. In OSUs last 19 games he had 4+ fouls in 13 of them despite logging >25 minutes only once or twice

Additionally, it opens himself up to wide open passes inside as well as makes it more difficult to rebound

Going straight up is fundamental basketball

2- He doesn't play the post well

He just has never developed a post game. He may have a few nights where he is hot, but he doesn't have the moves to be a weapon against even a reasonable post defender

Additionally his post defense against opposing quality bigs will be suspect. He doesn't have a low center of gravity so he is at a disadvantage.

With the ridiculous amount of foul calls combined with the tempo of today's game, running your O through a post player is super risky. It's a nice addition at Auburn to have a guy like Wiley or A&M with Tyler Davis, but they are limited to about 20 minutes and always worry about fouls

True. But i just want a guy that can step out and hit a 15ft shot with consistency and stretch out a defense. Hall and Taylor are awful, I can shoot better than both of them.

Chin, what you're preaching is pretty much on the money. IMO, the problem is the quality of coaching, and the mentality of today's kids. The way kids set picks and how their teammate doesn't help set the pick up, make me cringe. You hardly ever see kids properly box out(extend arms to the elbow) anymore. Blocking shots (tip and retrieve the ball and) has become a game to see how far a kid can slap the ball into the seats. If today's kids were brought up and trained in Europe or Asia, they'd beat the shite out of what's playing in this country now.

Honestly, the competition is the limiting factor combined with coaches who aren't really incentivized to do anything about it.

A top 100 athlete has gone 18 years of being able to dominate by just showing up. Their habits and foundation is built on out athleting opponents and it works.

The coaches at the youth level want to win and may not even recognize the lack of development if the kids are dominating at a high level

Of the few that do recognize/prioritize fundamentals + get buy in from the kid, not that many of those coaches have the expertise to develop the kid

I think Taylor has played much better the last 8-9 games, far from great but more consistent.

My problem with our bits is that they try to block bad shots. Just get the rebound.

According to KenPom

Taylor offensive efficiency rating and rebounding rate both Off/Def have improved in SEC play

Nobody is going to mistake him for Hakeem Olajuwon, but he has definitely played much better on offense. And, he's better, fundamentally, than Hall on defense.

And he's shooting a blistering 50% from the line - up from thirty-seven-mother-fricking-percent last year.

He and Hall should both be embarrassed by their rebounding numbers though.

A lot of bad shots are in response to the rim protector filling for the block.

They also don't know it is going to be a bad shot until they've already committed to trying to defend/block it.

Taylor has definitely gotten better. He's finally gotten comfortable catching on the block and turning and shooting a short hook shot. He also has done a reasonably decent job passing out of the post.
