Why did Justin Coleman transfer? Seems like he would have been a great guy to have coming off the bench for ya'll

Wondered the same thing bc he played a lot. Guess he saw his role being diminished with Ingram here or offseason meeting with AJ he was encouraged to leave?

I sad the same thing before the year and got ripped apart in here for saying we shouldve kept Coleman...

I don't know why he didn't stay. He was a great drive and dish player. Couldn't finish in traffic for shite, but it's unfortunate that he left IMO.

His uncle said Johnson pushed him out.

Ok, that make sense.

He shot under 30% for his career, and only averaged 2.5 assists. He was great from the line though and didn't turn it over much. I don't think the team would be any better with him. He'd be just another mediocre player on the team.

He can create better than Johnson... That kid can't get pass the first defender to save his life.

I thought Coleman had potential and was surprised he transferred. I don't think he would help us much though. His strength was drive and kick, and we have no one that can shoot threes regardless of how open they are.

We've had a ton of turnover on the roster since 2011
Lacey
Jacobs
Pollard
Riley is the only member of '14 class to make it past sophomore year
Tarrant and Kessens transferred in only to transfer out
I'm probably leaving out a few guys too. It's no wonder the team was so thin last year. A lot of those guys I had high hopes for too.

This is just a killer for a new coach and most casual fans don't realize just how big a deal this is. Not only are you in a tough spot for depth + developed talent, the veterans play a big role in helping young guys adjust/learn the culture.
Auburn had a similar issue, in year 4 we have no Barbee SRs and only 1 recruit from that year

That's what makes me sick. The casual fans who just watch when we're winning and don't watch when we're losing don't understand everything that's going on. I keep seeing idiots calling for a coaching change in year 2. Avery just signed the best class in school history and there's some people wanting him fired. Most of the guys who are here are from Grant's time or either they're transfers we had to bring in to fill the roster. You can't ask for much from this group. Grant recruited a ton of players who could play defense, but couldn't shoot even if they're wide open. We should be fine when we get some elite talent in next year, and hopefully that'll keep us recruiting at a high level.

No he can't.
He had a handful of good games where he got hot from 3, but other than those he was woefully ineffective. The fact that Coleman might get around the first guy meant absolutely nothing because if he didn't have a pass available (which was often), he either got his shot blocked or had to dribble through and back out. He was also a defensive liability in that literally anyone on the floor could post him up and he provided no rebounding help.
In two seasons at Alabama Coleman had 42 steals to balance against 102 turnovers. His last season at Bama, Coleman turned it over three times for every steal he made. Further, Coleman was a career 28% shooter from the floor and 26% from 3 point range.
AJjr may not be the best, but he still shoots roughly 10% better than Coleman and thus far this season has 13 steals to go agains 18 turnovers. Other than free throw shooting (where AJjr shoots a still quite goo 79%), there is absolutely no measure where he is not an exponential step up from Justin Coleman.
If you still think Coleman really could have been a meaningful contributor, consider this - he transferred to Samford and his other possibilities were Gerogia State and Northern Kentucky.
The fact that Coleman was ever given a scholarship is a pretty damning indictment on how bad Anthony Grant's recruiting went over his last couple of seasons.

Coleman was the number 1 player in Alabama when he came out. He'd get a scholarship offer from Avery and Bruce now. He didn't pan out, but he was a highly rated player.

Anybody grumbling or pissed off by this team in Year 2 and wondering if things are off the rails doesn't watch basketball or understand how things work. That's just silliness.

Exactly. Avery has done as much as he can do with this roster. When he brings in the 2017 class, then we can start judging him. Gotta give him time to get his players in

Coleman was rated the number 45 player in the nation and number 1 in state but shouldn't had got an offer lol.

Coleman was ESPN's #76 and 247's #46
The guy was recruited by a lot of good basketball programs

I know I have the benefit of hindsight, but I stand by that assertion. He just isn't/wasn't the kind of talent it takes to win in the SEC and his career performance bears that fact out - which is why he's at Samford now.

Coleman was scared of contact and couldn't finish.
