You think? Self doesn't run a very guard friendly system and tends to play mostly upperclassmen in his backcourt.

These five guys are seniors/graduates and will definitely be gone after the season:

Estrada
Nelson
Pringle
Sears
Wrightsell

Plus we have one open scholarship, so we will have room to add six new bodies after this season. That is with no early draft departures and no one transferring out. That is probably unlikely in this day and age of college basketball, but let's just stick with six for now because anything else would be strictly speculation at this point.

So if we have six spots, my guess is we are probably looking at a four man recruiting class + a two man portal class or a three man recruiting class + a three man portal class. I suppose it is also possible that we go with a five man recruiting class + a one man portal class, but that would be a little surprising to me.

The guys listed below seem to be what is left of our primary targets for the 24 class - some are much more likely than others and some are higher priority than others. **Aiden Sherrell is supposedly coming off the board and committing to us today according to Trilly so i'm just going to go ahead and count him as the first commitment for this exercise.**

quote:

Point Guards:

5* Zoom Diallo | 6'4" 190 lbs | #21 overall | #1 PG | 247

Shooting Guards:

5* Tre Johnson | 6'6" 190 lbs | #4 overall | #1 SG | 247
4* Billy Richmond | 6'5" 200 lbs | #31 overall | #5 SG | 247

Combo Guards:

5* Boogie Fland | 6'2" 165 lbs | #20 overall | #2 CG | 247
4* Jase Richardson | 6'2" 165 lbs | #35 overall | #3 CG | 247

Small Forwards:

5* VJ Edgecombe | 6'5" 180 lbs | #6 overall | #2 SF | 247
4* Amier Ali | 6’8” 175 lbs | #61 overall | #17 SF | 247

Power Forwards:

5* Asa Newell | 6'9" 205 lbs | #9 overall | #2 PF | 247
5* Derrion Reid | 6'7" 180 lbs | #16 overall | #4 PF | 247
4* Tyler Betsey | 6'8" 185 lbs | #32 overall | #7 PF | 247

Center:

5* Aiden Sherrell | 6'10" 215 lbs | #22 overall | #4 C | 247

Zoom Diallo - I think he's probably going to stay out West, but Mac seems to think we have a shot. He is not scheduled to visit us.

Tre Johnson - This is a Texas/Baylor battle. He is scheduled to visit us on 10/14 so maybe we have a chance, but I really doubt it.

Billy Richmond - His dad played at Memphis. Feels like he's going to end up at Kentucky to me. He is scheduled to visit us on 10/20.

Boogie Fland - Just had his OV with us this past weekend. Seems like we have a shot, but I think he likely ends up at Indiana or Kentucky.

Jase Richardson - Trilly says it us or Sparty. He already OV'd here and is scheduled to OV to Michigan State on 10/8.

VJ Edgecombe - Too early to tell. Highly recruited kid, everyone wants him. He is scheduled to OV here on 11/4.

Amier Ali - Not a lot of news out there about him, but we made his top 5 a couple weeks ago. He has no OV's scheduled as of now.

Asa Newell - Long considered a UGA lean, Mac seems to think we have a shot here. No more OV's scheduled.

Derrion Reid - Trilly says it is us or FSU. He OV'd to FSU a couple weeks ago and will OV here on 10/20.

Tyler Betsey - Trilly says it us or Cincinnati. He OV'd here on 9/9 and just Ov'd there this past weekend. 50/50 either way right now.

So let's say we end up with this as our 24 class:

Jase Richardson
Derrion Reid
Tyler Betsey
Aiden Sherrell

That's a combo guard, two wings and a big man. Two 5* and two 4* - all top 35 players in their class. That would currently be the #1 class in the country. Might not end as #1, but probably top 3. Top 5 at worst.

If i'm a basketball player, i'm going to Kansas over Ole Miss without hesitation. If it doesn't work out, I can always hit the portal after my freshman season.

Oh yeah if the two options are Kansas and OM that's not even a question to me. I think he'd have been better off staying home and sticking with Auburn or giving us a harder look though. Oats and Bruce run much more guard and underclassman friendly systems than Self or Beard.

Great summary write-up.

At least in my case, there're so many pieces (and names) floating around sometimes, it really helps to see such a concise and informative listing.

I don't really know what happened with him and AU, that was a weird situation. I'm guessing it was all related to the Flanigan stuff which is why everyone assumed he would end up at Ole Miss. I also don't think we were ever too high on him tbh and he may not have been very interested in us either.

Yeah I have no idea what if any interest there was between us and him. I do find our lack of mutual interest with a bunch of PGs a bit odd though. There's going to be a ton of minutes available. Maybe Oats is mostly going to focus on building a backcourt through the portal going forward. Experienced guards are generally how you win in March.

Ranking the Contenders: Five-star Boogie Fland

Five-star Boogie Fland is in the thick of his visit schedule and officially boasts a top eight. The real list of programs with a realistic shot of landing him, however, is much shorter than that. A case can be made that just three teams have a real chance of landing the five-star point guard, with a few others being tangentially in the mix.

Today, Rivals national analyst Rob Cassidy ranks the contenders in the Fland Sweepstakes by how likely they are to actually secure his verbal commitment.

1. KENTUCKY

The Wildcats should be viewed as 1A in a tightly packed group of three programs at the top of Fland’s list. The five-star guard'’s Sept. 8 visit to Lexington along with John Calipari’s reputation for developing one-and-done players have made UK the presumed slight favorite but it’s not as though the Wildcats are a lock at this juncture.

Expect Fland to go into decision mode in early October, with an announcement coming before Halloween. That’s all to say that it’s almost closing time for Calipari and his staff, as they will look to distance themselves from both Alabama and Indiana in the weeks to come. UK is yet to land a guard in the 2024 cycle, which may play well here.

*****

2. INDIANA

Multiple people in the know have referred to Indiana as the sleeper in Fland’s recruitment for some time now, but the Hoosiers have gone from “sleeper” to “serious player” in the last few weeks.

Fland visited Bloomington in the summer and has been a priority for the Hoosiers ever since, as head coach Mike Woodson has made multiple trips to New York to see the five-star guard. He even spoke at a coaching clinic at Fland’s high school. Woodson and company like their chances here, even if UK and Alabama might be tough to topple.

*****

3. ALABAMA

Fland's Sept. 23 visit to Alabama reinforced the Tide as one of very few teams with a shot of landing the Stepinac High School star’s pledge. There's some serious separation between the top three and everyone else in the mix, as it now seems like a bit of a lock that the touted guard will play for the Wildcats, Hoosiers or Crimson Tide. For now, every other program on the list looks to be window dressing.

The space among the top three isn’t large by any definition of the word, so a case could be made to tweak the order and put ‘Bama in the No. 2 or even No. 1 spot.

*****

4. MICHIGAN

Michigan is almost definitely on the outside looking in here, as there's some serious distance between the Wolverines and the top three. That said, they look to be the best of the rest. Fland visited Ann Arbor back in May, and the Wolverine staff stayed in contact since the trip, showing face at AAU events and open gyms at his high school.

Still, it feels as though it would take some serious luck for Michigan to actually land his commitment.

*****

5. MARYLAND

If Fland’s scheduled visit to Maryland actually takes place, the Terrapins will give themselves a chance to move up this list. If not, the program probably doesn’t bear mentioning as a real player to land the five-star guard.

There’s some semblance of a relationship in place between Fland and Kevin Willard’s staff, but it’s gonna take some work for the Terrapins to become real players – work that simply can’t take place without an official visit. Maryland is very much in a wait-and-see situation.

*****

6. ST. JOHN’S

The Red Storm are technically present on Fland’s list of finalists, but it doesn’t seem as though Rick Pitino is going to win this sweepstakes unless something changes late. It feels unlikely that Fland would pick SJU without taking an official visit, even if he’s been on campus in an unofficial capacity. Fland staying home in New York to help revitalize a once-proud program would be a nice story. It’s simply not a realistic one.

That's what i'm thinking too. Get your experienced lead guard(s) from the portal (unless you have a slam dunk sure fire option from the recruiting class) and grab a bunch of long, athletic wings/bigs from high school. That's not a bad strategy tbh.

We’re recruiting Fland, Diallo, and Richardson heavily

We have not been in contact or recruited nearly as many point guard types in this class as we have wings/bigs though. I think that was Robot's point. Seems like we identified a few that we like, but we aren't going to take a PG in this class for the sake of taking a PG if it isn't one of the very few we would really want. If we miss on them we will just grab one from the portal. At least that's how I see it.

Yeah pretty much. Fland and Richardson are combo guards. Diallo is the only pure PG we seem to be actively recruiting and there is very little smoke there. The odds of us signing more than 1 are pretty slim, and we are 100% losing Estrada, Wrightsell, and Sears to exhausted eligibility after this season. That's a lot of minutes to replace and it appears we do not plan on replacing them with prep recruits even though I think we easily could.

Maybe Oats experience with blue chip so-called one and done point guards has made him believe that we're better off getting an experienced mid-major guy out of the portal. I mean when's the last time we landed a 5-star point guard who was ready to come in day 1 and run the offense the way we need it run? Sexton? JD and Bradley definitely weren't ready their freshman seasons. Kira had a very good freshman season but he wasn't relied on to be the guy.

Nope, it's a very good one. I've heard a saying, freshmen guards lose in March. And if you look at it, it's often true. PG probably had the largest learning curve from HS to college. So it needs a lot of sense

I'll go further. Who was the last 5 star PG from any school that dominated as a freshman? It's pretty rare compared to wings or bigs.
