3SSB FRIDAY: Top 20 Ja'Kobe Walter's crowd, breakout performers and more

On Friday night, few players packed as heavy hitting a crowd of coaches as 2023’s No. 17 ranked player Ja’Kobe Walter of Team Trae Young. A 6-foot-5 shooting guard from McKinney (Texas) High who is the proud owner of one of the top mid-range games in the country, Walter drew Baylor’s Scott Drew (plus two assistants), Oklahoma’s Porter Moser, Texas head coach Chris Beard (with an assistant) and Oklahoma State boss Mike Boynton (with an assistant and more on them below) plus assistants from Auburn and Alabama to name a few.

Strong and confident, Walter is methodical in getting to his spots where he’s going to rise up and hit a jumper in a defender’s face. Try to speed him up, you won’t. He’s too strong and too intentional in what he’s going to do and if you can get in his way, then more power to you. Walter could be a bit more explosive at times and he can get more consistent from deep but there’s little doubt that he has all the tools to be an impact freshman.

Walter said that he’s in no rush but he is already really familiar with Alabama, Auburn, Baylor and Oklahoma among others and mentioned that he’s going to really give Kansas State a shot because of his relationship with new coach Jerome Tang. Look for a top 10 or so in the relatively near future and a decision after the summer.

MORE FRIDAY NOTES

They coughed up a late lead to Fisher and the Elite 6, but the Arkansas Hawks trio of junior big men Brock Vice and Rashaud Marshall along with sophomore guard Jaye Nash each had their moments. Already pushing 6-foot-10 and 230 pounds, Vice can really shoot the ball, likes to play physical and he’s gotten early offers from Central Arkansas and Tennessee Tech to name a few. His list will grow with more of what he did Friday. Marshall didn’t score a ton, but at 6-foot-9 with athleticism, a body to build on and strong hands, he’s going to get watched really closely by mid majors who have to understand that high majors are keeping tabs. As for Nash, he's a slippery 2024 floor general who can get into the paint, sets up teammates, hits floaters and shows potential as a jump shooter. Nash already has offers from Alabama, Ole Miss, Texas A&M and hometown Memphis.

That seems destined to happen. He signed with Buzz at VA Tech.

I get the feeling he's going to end up elsewhere. And I'm pretty ok with that.

I was gonna say the same thing, he fits their typical player mold perfectly. Very athletic switchable defender with consistency issues on offense.

Yeah, I think JQ is going to return and take up the spot that Llewellyn would have.

Dream scenario for me, Llewellyn can kick rocks

That'd probably the best case JQ return situation. Doesn't hurt us with Sears, still sign a nice 3 and D guy, bring JQ back in January and let him play a lot off ball.

Exactly

Tim Watts earlier this morning:

As noted earlier this week Mark Sears was a huge get and priority for the Bama staff. That was the first domino to drop portal wise. Oats and company are still combing through the portal options but there isn't a huge rush with the priority being not only talent but team fit. Sears checked all those boxes obviously. Jalen Bridges is a guy to keep a close eye on as possibly another domino to drop. UA has been very active with Bridges and sources indicate Bama is in the middle of his recruitment. Obviously some other teams involved. No timeline here yet but UA staff has done a good job so far in his recruitment. You will see a lot of names linked to Bama and the staff is doing its due diligence. A wing would also be sought after to round out this class.

Just a short fyi before scrimmage.

I noticed Llewellyn isn't on that names to watch list any more. As I figured, it was probably one or the other.

Oquendo and Reeves, obviously. Who else do we think might be an option?

Bridges is the only other one that we know of publicly, I believe.

I don't understand why Keon hasn't announced his intentions to enter the draft yet though.

The "insiders" have been saying to keep an eye out for Llewellyn, but that excerpt didn't have anything about him. I'm assuming they don't think he's an option any more.

I was referencing the "also" part of that statement which I assume means they're looking to add a wing on top of adding Bridges and Sears (I'm thinking Bridges is likely a 4 in our offense, much in the way that Herb was).

I'd be happy with either of those guys, though I have developed an obsession with Reeves at this point

Gotcha, I thought there may have been an actual list somewhere that I wasn't aware of and needed to check out.

I see - yeah, that could be the case. Some of that will hinge on what JD and JQ do.

I think we technically only have one spot open right now after Sears committed assuming Keon is gone.

If JD goes pro, we'll have two spots.

At this point, i'm kind of expecting JQ to come back, but if he didn't we would have a third open spot as long as Keon and JD enter the draft.

There is also the question of whether Miles will enter the portal, but I think it's probably smarter to just assume he will be back until we hear otherwise.

My own personal feel at this time is that Keon and JD are both going to be gone, but JQ and Miles will both return. So that would be two spots for some combination of Bridges, Llewellyn, Oquendo, Reeves, Wynter (not sure we are actually pushing hard for him tbh) or someone else we don't know about yet.

1 Bediako
2 Burnett
3 Gurley
4 Miller
5 Bradley
6 Griffen
7 Clowney
8 Pringle
9 Sears
10 Miles
11 Davison
12 Quinerly
