I know Reid is versatile enough to play multiple positions he has a well rounded game. He can drive really well, good shooter, good rebounder, good defender.

That's what you hear from most top forward prospects. Because they create most offenses in high school by themselves. In the end, roles are decided in college.

Ratings are definitely far from gospel Especially in basketball, where's there's shite for funding compared to football.
We thought Miller was going to be very good and he a one and done. But nobody here was predicting he'd be first team All American , 20 ppg, #2 pick level good. Anyone claiming they did is full of shite.

Reid plays for a very good HS team against a lot of the best HS teams. Sherrells on the same team, they have 5 five stars in their starting lineup, including the #1 players in the 2025 and 2026 classes and Reid looks like their best player a lot of the time.

You can say the same for Ja Morant, and Frank Kaminsky.

He committed to Washington. He’s in the same HS Team as Reid and Sherrell, he is the 19th ranked player in this class and doesn't start if that tells you how loaded their team is.

Not in 2023. They're all playing at prep schools with top guard prospects. Then in the summer they play on camp circuit teams that also have top guard prospects. If they can't create for themselves they aren't going to get many opportunities to do so.

Communicating intent is important. Most of the top prospects at the WF-SF position in high school are said to be versatile. (excluding shooter)
This is because most G-SFs handle the ball and give a roll appropriate to the position. Center position players are not said to be versatile.
In the first place, is there any player among the top prospects in the country at the WF-SF position who is not versatile?? Most of the country's top prospects are versatile.

Derrion Reid commits to Alabama gives the Crimson Tide a Top-10 class
by Eric Bossi
Dec 22, 11:59 AM
Nate Oats and Alabama picked up an early Christmas present on Friday when five-star forward Derrion Reid announced his commitment to the Crimson Tide.
A 6-foot-7 forward from Georgia who is playing his senior season at Napa (Calif.) Prolific Prep, Reid ranks No. 17 nationally and made things official while home for Christmas break.
"I just felt like it was the best fit for me," Reid told 247Sports. "I like the play style and seeing how coach develops his players."
One of the more athletic frontcourt players in the class of 2024, Reid has significantly improved his all-around game over the last year and had a terrific summer in the Nike EYBL with Team Thad. He finishes lobs, drives aggressively to the rim and is a dangerous shooter. At Alabama, he's just trying to be a good two-way player while hopefully preparing himself to eventually make another jump in level of play.
"I just want to be a great player on both sides of the ball and get ready to get to the next level and have a great season."
Reid is the third member of the class of 2024 to pick Alabama. He joins high school teammate Aidan Sherrell and wing Naas Cunningham -- both four-star prospects -- in a class that will now move to No. 7 in the industry generated Composite Team Rankings.
Earlier this week, Reid said he was very much looking forward to getting the process over with so that he can channel all of his energy into preparing for next season.
"I will be stress free, locked in on getting better and just focusing on one college and getting ready for next year."
247Sports Director of Scouting Adam Finkelstein provides this scouting report of Reid.
"Reid established himself as one of the more versatile forwards in the country this year. He plays with an aggressive scoring mentality and is a threat from various spots on the floor. He’s probably most comfortable in the mid-post area, or with similar elbow isos. He has very good footwork and loves to face-up after starting with his back to the basket. He goes right into contact and can play through it, but is also a threat to pull-up over top of contesting defenders in the mid-range area. There are flashes of having a very multi-dimensional attack though. He has touch and rotation to keep developing behind the arc, despite not yet being a high-volume threat and spraying some misses when he’s out of rhythm (14-35 through 21 EYBL games, 40%). He similarly doesn’t look to attack off a live dribble very often, but can show flashes of a crossover and playmaking ability in the open floor. There are even occasional glimpses of passing creativity, although he recorded a flat assist-to-turnover ratio in the EYBL (45 of each through 21 games). There’s similar versatility on the defensive end where he moves his feet, utilizes his length, hedges ball-screens well, and can bang with bigger players inside. He’s a quality pound-for-pound rebounder and good vertical athlete, known for some explosive put-back dunks. He has an already sturdy frame that should support plenty more muscle mass when he gets to the next level. Overall, he’s a versatile, scoring combo-forward, who approaches the game like more of a four at this point, but moves well enough to eventually develop into more of a big wing."
I like that last part, of him being a 4 with the ability to become a 3. We need bodies, and being versatile to guard wings is what makes him a 5 star. Having a 4 and a 5 arriving with a year of chemistry in high school will be huge for our defense.

We need some guards in this cycle but Sears has another year, right? Dude isn’t getting drafted simply because of his size imho.
Wouldn’t be a bad idea to invest some NIL deal to get Sears back one more year if we can’t get the guard we want out of HS or even the portal. Obviously depends on what Sears wants to do as well but it would make sense.
Estrada should be out of eligibility but Wrightsell should have a year left too.
With the studs we have coming in it wouldn’t hurt to have a guard like Sears come back for one more go.

Sears can come back and we are his home state team and I think that means a lot to him playing for us, he has alluded to it before. I think we will offer him a really good NIL deal and he will come back.
As far as other guards Wrightsell and Griffen should be back too and hopefully Cosby. Idk what Parker will do.
Naas Cunningham plays more like a guard than a forward even though he is 6’7 and listed as a F on the recruiting sites. I think we will use him more as a tall guard similar to how we used Miller.
Here’s a recent highlight video of his so you can see what I mean.
Naas Cunningham recent highlights
I think we will try to add another top guard in the portal as well similar to the Sears/Estrada adds the past two seasons. They were both ranked as top 10 guards in the portal.

Here’s Oats talking about Cunningham on signing day, he referred to him as a guard.
quote:
“Naas Cunningham is one of the most skilled big guards in the country, and we’ve done really well with those types here lately. Going back to Herb Jones, (Josh) Primo, Keon Ellis, kind of that 6-6 – Keon started for the Kings last night – leading into Brandon Miller. We’ve done well with these big guards and wings. He’s coming in, he’s skilled, athletic. He’s got to put some weight on, but we’ve taken some guys like that in the past and been able to put some weight on them. I think he’s got big upside.

I always saw Naas as a 3/2 kind of wing, and Reid as a 4/3 kind. Obviously I'm talking defense, since offense is ideally positionless.
Sears is gonna enter the draft again. The way he's been playing, it'd be surprising if a team wouldn't grab him in at least the 2nd. He's playing so well, I'm not sure what else they'd want or expect him to show. Which could disincentivize coming back. But if he wouldn't get drafted, I'm not sure the difference in NIL money vs playing on an A league European team. It seems like 2 way g league deals make pretty damn good money. I'm curious what Bediako is making with San Antonio.

He won’t get drafted because of his height and would make more in NIL coming back than he would as an undrafted free agent. With NIL, players like Edey, Kendric Davis, Oscar Tshibwe, Drew Timme, Marquis Nowell who are great in college but wont get drafted have all came back to college for their 5th years in to get the NIL money, Sears will come back too I’d bet over playing in the G league for less money that he’d make in College.
Kendric Davis for Memphis last year is Sears height and was a top scorer in college basketball and didn't get drafted. Same with Marquis Nowell.

If everyone who has eligibility left returns next year (except for Nelson, I think he gets drafted) we are at 13 scholarships.
G
Sears
Griffen
Wrightsell
Cunningham
Cosby
Parker
F
Reid
Stevenson
Walters
Dioubate
F/C
Sherrell
Wague
Pringle
Everyone returning is pretty unrealistic in this day and age though, Dioubate and Parker seem like two who could transfer to try to find more playing time somewhere else. I hope Parker stays.
We might have a F/C transfer, I hope not.
Anyway, my point is, to bring someone else in we we'd need someone to transfer to free up a spot.
I hope we bring in another top 10 guard from the portal to replace Estrada.

So who do you guys think is Reid recruiting for us on his team? Any ideas?
Posted on 12/25/23 at 10:50 pm to My2Bits
AJ Dybansta for sure, he’s the #1 player in the 2025 class. Our assistant coach Preston Murphy coached him in AAU, so between Murphy , Reid, and Sherrell we have a lot of connections to him.
