I doubt it. Just because a contract is iron clad does not mean that the party who wishes to break it is powerless. When has Nick Saban honored a contract with Alabama? He wins a championship and says, "If you want me to hang around, pay me more."
Saban has all the leverage plus his contract pretty much allows him to walk whenever he wants. Saban also wins.... a lot.......if we could get a winner in basketball like that, he can have a contract like that too.....

The Board can note that things aren't going well and suggest that everyone leave on good terms with one another. We can make life not so good on Avery should he want to play hardball. Pretty sure that the contract probably notes that Avery has to seek employment and once employment is found, it mitigates against what Alabama has to pay Avery anyway.
Short of moral turpitude, we owe that money and its regardless of the W-L. Avery can seek employment all he has to do is make a "good faith" effort to find a gig. It's the same reason you heard Les Miles' name come up in every coaching search.

My point is that just because a contract is in place it doesn't mean that things cannot be tweaked and that the contract breaker does not have some power in the deal. Saban shows us that much.
By pointing out that he will be a dead man walking next year and that he will play in front of 2500 people per game and that he will further trash his reputation before being unceremoniously canned, the board and Avery most certainly can come to a deal that benefits both parties.
Besides, Avery will want to work. He isn't going to sit around drawing checks for nothing. He will look to get an analyst gig on television.

I suppose its a matter of semantics: Avery could collect the full buy-out but that entail him getting unceremoniously canned.
Or, he could agree to some resolution to a mutual parting of ways that will help him continue coaching or another gig.
