went to a discussion in 'RayGator's Swamp Gas' webpage, and there didnt seem to any real news about what he was doing/where he was going... and after a couple of posts it turned into a discussion about the cheap beer they drank as college kids... and seemed to go on forever. I quit reading after 2 more pages... so??? Seems at one point in his original recruitment there was interest in Bama.. but the Barners were talking about him being a Aubarn fan and that he would really never go to Bama because of that. I think we could have had him but we slow played him and tried to get back in late when it looked like higher targets were going elsewhere IIRC. Just wondered if he was not happy or it didn’t look like he was going to pan out and was encouraged to leave

Malik Langham enters name into NCAA transfer portal By Thomas Goldkamp Apr 15, Doesn't really indicate the issue (not seeming to be on track for more playing time... but his leaving puts their depth in a hard place)
quote:

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Florida will have another player looking to leave the program following spring practice.

247Sports can confirm that defensive tackle Malik Langham, a redshirt freshman, has entered his name into the NCAA's transfer portal. Langham redshirted last fall after signing with the Gators in the 2018 recruiting class.

He did not appear to be on track to earn any sort of significant playing time this spring.

Still, his potential departure would be a serious blow for Florida's tackle depth moving forward. Of Florida's six remaining scholarship defensive tackles heading into 2019, only one is an underclassman (true freshman summer enrollee Jaelin Humphries).

That means the Gators will have to take a huge number of interior defensive line prospects in the next recruiting class or two.

A former four-star prospect out of Huntsville, Ala., Langham was rated as the No. 315 overall player in the country in 2018 by the 247Composite, an industry-generated recruiting ranking. He was rated as the No. 14 overall strong-side defensive end and the No. 11 overall player in the state of Alabama.

Alabama Spring Position Recap: Defensive line - BamaOnLine By Charlie Potter
quote:

Spring football has ended for Alabama, and Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide have entered the offseason after 15 practices. But with those said practices and UA’s annual A-Day Game still fresh on our minds, we recap what happened at each position this spring, while also looking at the past and future of the groups. We continue our spring position rewinds with the defensive line.

PRE-SPRING QUESTION

Alabama had to replace two starters with Quinnen Williams declaring for the 2019 NFL Draft and Isaiah Buggs exhausting his eligibility. The Crimson Tide’s top two reserves a season ago were LaBryan Ray and Phidarian Mathis. Could that duo start the spring alongside Raekwon Davis on the first team and finish the spring as clear favorites for starting spots for the opener? Or would any of the young players, including three early enrollees, give them a run for their money while vying for rotational roles at a position that was desperately in need of some depth?

Alabama Spring Position Recap: Defensive line - BamaOnLine By Charlie Potter
quote:

WHAT WE LEARNED

Davis, Ray and Mathis opened the spring as the first group, but prior to the second scrimmage of the spring, true freshman DJ Dale climbed the pecking order and joined Davis and Ray as the first-team nose tackle. The early enrollee did not relinquish that position the rest of the spring.

Mathis was bumped back to the second unit alongside returning players like Christian Barmore, Tevita Musika and Stephon Wynn, who no longer sported a knee brace, and Alabama’s other two freshmen in Antonio Alfano and Justin Eboigbe. While some of the players flashed potential during the spring, the second team as a whole need to pay better attention to the small details.

“I think some of the other guys have certainly shown us that they have ability,” Saban said. “I think when they get in a competitive situation, they completely just dumb down. They can’t focus. They’re supposed to slant, they don’t slant. You can see the talent, you can see the ability, but they’ve got to develop confidence when they hear a call that this is what I do and trust in that and believe in that. And right now in practice, it’s starting to happen.

“But the next step is we’ve got to get it in a competition situation.”

Alabama Spring Position Recap: Defensive line - BamaOnLine By Charlie Potter

QUESTIONS WE STILL HAVE

Dale had a great spring after joining the Crimson Tide program ahead of the College Football Playoff. His was a name that popped up about midway through the 15 practices and the buzz around the true freshman never wavered. The question for the summer and preseason camp is can he keep it up and build off the spring he put together in order to enter the season as a starter?

With Dale making moves, can older players like Mathis, Barmore and Wynn take that next step and provide the quality depth that Alabama needs along its defensive line in 2019? And if they can’t can one of the three freshmen not yet on campus help with that? Players like Ishmael Sopsher, Byron Young and Braylen Ingraham will join the fray after graduating from high school in May.

And finally, can the veterans of the group, which haven’t been mentioned as much, lead what will be a very young and relatively inexperienced defensive line room into a new season -- and with a new position coach in Brian Baker? That will be up to guys like Davis and Ray this fall.

LINK ]A look at Alabama's competition at center following spring camp Tony Tsoukalas • BamaInsider.com @Tony_Tsoukalas

There’s no question who will be taking the first snap when Alabama lines up for its season-opener against Duke on August 31. But what about the person delivering it?

For the second straight season, Alabama will need to find a replacement at center as All-American Ross Pierschbacher departs for the NFL.

The Crimson Tide shuffled its pack a bit this spring, sliding Alex Leatherwood from right guard to left tackle while replacing him with Matt Womack. Those switches are significant but hardly concerning. Leatherwood was recruited as a tackle and seems to fit more naturally at the position. Meanwhile, Womack, who started at right tackle during the 2017 season, is arguably better suited for the inside where Alabama can utilize his strong run-blocking ability.

If there’s a question mark in this year’s unit, it’s in the middle.

“I think the issue is making sure that the center position is solidified,” Saban emphasized last month.

So far this Spring - it as been Chris Owens pretty much taking the great majority of the snaps at center..Emil Ekiyor Jr took snaps last year in mop up duty as well as moving in for Owens during the spring. Blueshirt-Hunter Brannon started with the second unit this spring. And we have heard many compliments for true freshman Darrian Dalcourt, who was rated as the #3 center in 2019's class. When Brown returns from the 4 game suspension, there well may be a bit of a clash between Ekiyor (bigger more athletic) and Owens. But seems there is depth for a while at OC.

LINK ]Alabama Football: The State of the Crimson Tide Part 3 Bama Hammer - by Lauri Springer
quote:

While the ending of the 2018 season may have left us all in great disarray, worry not Alabama Football faithful, the state of the Crimson Tide is strong.

If I had to rank my least favorite games I have watched the Alabama football team compete it, the Kick Six would be first followed closely by the last second loss to Clemson led by Deshaun Watson in 2017. Following those last-second losses, the Ole Miss losses in back-to-back seasons would be next. Last year’s crushing defeat to Clemson would be last on the list, perhaps because I realized so early on that the game was out of reach.

Losing at the very end of a game as the result of only a play or two going differently is harder to take. Knowing the Tide could have or even should have won is frustrating when the cards play out in the competition’s favor. In the National Championship game last year, it was clear Clemson was the far superior team and deserved the win.

That precedent is all anyone needs to know to understand how this off-season and the upcoming season will be for the Alabama football team. I’m not sure of anything Nick Saban enjoys more than not being the top-ranked team in the nation. All the media coverage has been focused on Trevor Lawrence, Dabo Swinney, and the Clemson Tigers. A little disrespect to put a chip on their shoulders is the only motivation Saban and Scott Cochran need to get the team fired up.

Alabama Football Offense

Tua Tagovailoa experienced his toughest games of the season in the College Football Playoff. With a less than impressive spring game performance, the doubters are beginning to surface. I believe it’s important for everyone to remember our first experience with Tagovailoa- the overtime Titanic-moment win over Georgia in the National Championship. While he cemented himself to legend status with that play, he is still human and should be allowed to have human-like games. Going 19-for-31 with several dropped passes by receivers isn’t anything worthy of concern.

The Alabama football offense is only losing a few veterans in the running back core and on the offensive line. Nearly all of the receivers are returning with the exception of Irv Smith Jr. The offensive line and running back groups will replenish nicely with new talent. Tua Tagovailoa returns with more experience and better health. The state of the Crimson Tide offense is strong.

Alabama Football Defense

The defense only suffers a significant loss at the defensive line position. Quinnen Williams leaves behind a gaping hole. Raekwon Davis returns for his senior season with- hopefully- better decisions and his enormous size. He has the opportunity to be the anchor of the defensive line group next season.

The secondary is the group I am most excited to see next season. With far more experience and some leaders stepping up, namely Xavier McKinney and Trevon Diggs, the secondary should be nasty. Keep in mind, this was the secondary Tua was facing as part of the Spring Game while only being able to employ a very small portion of the offensive playbook.

Dylan Moses returns at linebacker and has the potential to fulfill his role as the vocal leader of the defense. I believe he may follow suit as one of the great Alabama linebackers. The state of the Crimson Tide defense is strong.

Alabama Football Special Teams

Skyler DeLong
performed very well at the Spring Game last weekend after losing the starting position early in 2018. While Bulovas knocked an extra point off the upright, he performed well otherwise. I anticipate freshman phenom Will Reichard will take over that position soon enough. He had a solid spring game performance as well. The state of the Crimson Tide special teams is strong.

Alabama Football Coaching

Nick Saban spent the beginning of the off-season cleaning house in the Alabama Football coaching staff room. Nearly every assistant moved on to other schools. However, Saban brought back in some firepower. The return of Sal Sunseri to the linebackers coach was Saban’s best move. Sunseri coached some of the best linebackers part of the best Alabama defenses ever and doesn’t appear to have lost his touch.

New defensive line coach Brian Baker led Mississippi State to have one of the best lines in the country last year. Steve Sarkisian’s style offense should complement Tua’s strengths nicely. The receiving core seems to be responding well to new receivers coach Holman Wiggins. This group of assistants may be Saban’s best in quite a few years. The state of the Crimson Tide coaches is strong.

Saban may have referred to the 2019 season as a rebuilding year, but I believe it will be anything but. With a chip on their shoulder, lots of returning talent, and strong coaching, the 2019 season should end with another trip to the College Football Playoff. The state of the Crimson Tide is certainly strong.

PRE-SPRING QUESTION

Fifth-year seniors Christian Miller and Jamey Mosley exhausted their eligibility, but Alabama still returned plenty of talent at the outside line position this spring. The only question surrounded the health of some of the said talent, especially for players like Terrell Lewis and Christopher Allen who missed the entire 2018 campaign with knee injuries they sustained before the season began.

WHAT WE LEARNED

Anfernee Jennings led the outside ‘backers into the spring, and outside of watching a drill or two here and there throughout the 15 practices, the redshirt senior was not limited. The same can be said for Allen, who practices all spring long and played with the second team in the A-Day Game. However, Lewis was all but shut down midway through the spring and watched the outside linebacker drills from afar along with Ben Davis, who missed the spring after shin splints surgeries.

So, players were dinged up and another in Cameron Latu spent all 15 practices with the tight ends, but depth was never really a concern off the edge. The outside ‘backers performed well in the scrimmages, including sophomore Eyabi Anoma. Like a lot of the young players at his position, Anoma benefitted from learning under new but familiar outside linebackers coach Sal Sunseri.

“He’s doing a good job,” Saban said of Anoma. “He’s working hard. He’s learning a lot. I think he’s responding very well to Sal with Sal coaching him. He’s doing much better in school, being responsible and trying to do the right things and respond to people the right way. He’s certainly making a very positive contribution to the defense. I certainly think that’s our expectation for him, and if he continues this way I’m sure he’s going to make a huge impact.”

QUESTIONS WE STILL HAVE

Saban commended the outside linebackers after scrimmage No. 1, and the position group did nothing to make him rescind his compliment in the following two game-like practices. Even with losing a player like Miller, there is quite a bit of talent at that area, including with early enrollee Kevin Harris. But can that talent remain healthy for an entire season? Or even for the start of one?

That remains to be seen. The injury bug sharply bit Alabama’s linebacking corps in 2017 and didn’t let go last year. Lewis and Allen were knocked out of the race before it even started, while Miller missed the national title game because of a hamstring injury. Injuries are never fun to cover, but Jennings, Lewis and Allen all have a history of them now. So, can they overcome those to give the Crimson Tide a formidable rotation of outside linebackers, along with Anoma, this fall?
