Until proven otherwise, I expect us to be down to our 3rd teamers at OLB by November.

But seriously, Anoma looks to be ready to play. And like someone else mentioned above, Coach Sal ought to make a huge difference. As a matter of fact, I expect our entire 2nd team front 7 to be much better developed compared to last year, and it'll be directly as a result of the coaching staff improvements.

Everybody talking about Anoma, I'm over here pumped about Anfernee Jennings under Sal.

He's a 3 phase LB who has gotten better every year. He had 6.5 sacks, 14 TFL and 12 passes defended less than a year removed from his knee injury against Clemson in the semifinals.

Expecting a Courtney Upshaw/Ryan Anderson type year from him...

Guess my point was much like the Ronnie Harrison issue. He hasn't played much, football IQ on the lower end. He got by in high school on his raw talent. While his talent showed last year, his understanding of organized defensive schemes was also obvious. All this said, I again worry that he might just jump if the agents whisper in his ear that he can clean up in the draft, when if he were to play his senior season (and not get injured) he just might be that much better of a player and hopefully make tons more money. BUT, nothing is ever guaranteed.

If Sal.does what we all think he is going to do with our pass rushers he will be gone. Everybody in the league is looking for pass rushers. Doont know his.living conditions now but im sure on tv they said that close to 90%(could be wrong) of the kids at his school were homeless.

Agreed. AJ was obviously hampered by his recovery early last year and did show more and more as the year progressed. With the New Dline coach B. Baker and Coach Sal with the OLB's; I am very hopeful that the lack of experience and a real rotation that was missing last year will be rectified. I remember the depth that Bo Davis always seemed to have in the "old days" and how successful those D's seemed (but, I am old and those could be just "remembering the good times" and not really be true.
With the talent available to the OLB's and the Dline this year, there should be a major upgrade over last year.

LINK ] Formerly-injured Trevon Diggs feels 'back to my normal self' BamaOnLine By Charlie Potter Apr 10, 9:00 AM
LINK ]VIDEO: Alabama football players before A-Day 4/9/2019 - TideSports.Com - By Terrin Waack - April 9, 2019 Trevon Diggs 6:38
quote:

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Trevon Diggs’ 2018 season was cut short by injury.

But Alabama’s rising senior cornerback is 100-percent healthy this spring.

“It felt good,” said Diggs of returning to practice at the beginning of the spring. “I wasn’t on the field for like six months. When I got back out there, I was kind of rusty, kind of timid. But once I started going, it started to ease up. It’s good to be back. It was a humbling experience.”

Diggs stepped into a permanent starting role at corner in 2018 after a brief stint with the ones to open the 2017 season. But his season ended early when he suffered a foot injury at Arkansas that kept him on the sideline for the next nine games. Diggs returned to full health just before the start of spring ball after he “planted wrong and had something break in my foot” in October.

Prior to that setback, though, the Gaithersburg, Md., was putting together a breakout season in the Crimson Tide’s secondary. Diggs was tied for fourth in the SEC in passes defended at seven before his injury. He had broken up a team-high six passes while picking off his first career pass against Louisiana-Lafayette while adding 20 tackles and one forced fumble through six starts.

The rest of Alabama’s nine contests, Diggs “got to learn a different aspect.”

“I got to see how to coach and to help other people and help myself, as well,” Diggs said. “There are more aspects to the game than just playing and doing it. You can learn different ways and I learned you couldn’t take anything for granted. Make the most of every opportunity you get.

“You can’t take it for granted.”

LINK ] Formerly-injured Trevon Diggs feels 'back to my normal self' BamaOnLine By Charlie Potter Apr 10, 9:00 AM...Continued...
quote:

Diggs will return to the starting lineup this fall -- his last in a crimson uniform. But this spring, he and fellow corner Patrick Surtain II have spent some time at Star with Shyheim Carter limited. The springtime, after all, is a perfect time for experimenting. “I want to learn Star more and have as much versatility as I can in all positions,” Diggs said. “If I could learn safety, I would, too.”

Spending some practice time playing closer to the action in the slot, Diggs is adapting to making calls and adjustments and flipping from one side of the formation more than when on the boundary.

He is leaning on Carter and using what he learned from Minkah Fitzpatrick as a freshman, not only as he continues to explore a new position but to be an example for UA’s younger defensive backs.

“Basically, the leadership aspect of it,” Diggs said. “I like how the younger guys asked me questions and stuff like that. They can follow me, so it’s like when I was in their position. I was asking (Fitzpatrick) the questions and he was trying to make me better. So, it just feels like I’m getting old.”

Diggs will be one of the veterans and leaders of the Crimson Tide defense for the 2019 season. He’s coming off a promising junior campaign that was cut short in early October, but he has a solid foundation started from last year and is building on that this spring. After having to watch Alabama end the season without him, Diggs is ecstatic to be back. And so are his teammates.

“It’s great to see Trevon Diggs back out here,” said defensive lineman Raekwon Davis.

Diggs said he was a bit timid when he returned to the practice field for the first time on March 8.

“But now, I just feel back to my normal self.”

LINK ]Daron Payne 2.0? Alabama freshman continues to impress - Al.Com - By Matt Zenitz | mzenitz@al.com
quote:

Less than a week into spring practice, there were people around the Alabama program already comparing the team’s new No. 94 to a recent Crimson Tide star who wore that same number.

Even at that early point, just a few months after DJ Dale first arrived at Alabama, the 6-foot-3, 315-pound freshman from Clay-Chalkville was already looking so good while wearing that No. 94 that one source said at the time: He’s looking like Daron Payne out there.
He still is, according to one of his teammates.

“He plays like Daron Payne,” senior defensive lineman Raekwon Davis said of Dale on Tuesday. “He plays just like Daron Payne.”...

LINK ]Alabama returns every starter at receiver and adds depth Tuscaloosa News.Com By Terrin Waack / Sports Writer Posted at 8:00 AM Updated at 9:35 AM

quote:

There has been an ongoing debate in the Alabama wide receivers room about who is the fastest.

“Me,” DeVonta Smith said Tuesday. “For sure.”

And the competition is pretty stacked.

The Crimson Tide returned all four of its starters from last season. Smith, Jerry Jeudy and Henry Ruggs III are back as juniors; the internal competition really started among them since they entered the program altogether in the same class. Jaylen Waddle, a year younger, is also thrown into the conversation at times after how he performed as a freshman.

It would be difficult to find someone more qualified to settle the argument than a teammate who goes up against them on a regular basis in practice and scrimmage.

“All of the receivers are good, all of them run good routes, and all of them are fast,” Alabama defensive back Trevon Diggs said. “But Henry, he’s super fast. If you don’t touch him and you don’t get hands on him, he’s going to run right by you.”

Perhaps the battle should expand this year.

The starters aren’t the Crimson Tide’s only returners. There’s also redshirt freshmen Xavier Williams and Slade Bolden and redshirt sophomores Tyrell Shavers and Chadarius Townsend.

True freshman John Metchie is already on campus as an early enrollee, too.

Alabama has its 14th and final practice Thursday before the spring season concludes Saturday with the annual A-Day game in Bryant-Denny Stadium at 1 p.m.

“I think Xavier Williams has made a lot of progress,” UA coach Nick Saban said last week. “I think John Metchie has showed flashes of doing things really, really well. I think Slade Bolden has made some plays. Shavers is better.

“So, I feel much better about the depth at that position than in the past.”

He’s not the only one.

“It’s been great because everybody’s coming along (and) everybody’s finally getting the feel of like this is us, this is the group that we’re going to have,” Smith said. “And we’ve been here for a minute, so it’s just everyone kind of getting held to the same expectation.”

Last year, Alabama had the No. 6 passing offense in the nation. The Crimson Tide averaged 323.6 yards through the air per game. That was good for a total of 4,854 yards and 52 touchdowns on 301 completions.

Jeudy, the 2018 Biletnikoff Award winner, caught the ball 68 times for 1,315 yards and 14 scores to lead the team. Waddle followed up with 45 receptions, 848 yards and seven touchdowns. And then Ruggs rounded out the top three with 46 grabs for 741 yards and 11 end-zone appearances.

“There’s improvement from everyone,” Smith said. “No matter who it is, you see improvement from everyone.”

LINK ]Alabama DBs explain challenges of defending Henry Ruggs III BamaOnLine - By Charlie Potter
quote:

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Henry Ruggs III is fast. The rising junior wide receiver ran a 4.25-range 40-yard dash during Alabama’s junior pro day in early March and thought he could have been faster.

And the Crimson Tide’s defensive backs are first-hand witnesses to Ruggs’ speed.

“All of the receivers are good, all of them run good routes and all of them are fast,” cornerback Trevon Diggs said. “But Henry, he’s super fast. If you don’t touch him and you don’t get hands on him, he’s going to run right by you, so I have to make sure I put hands on him. I have to make sure I touch him at the line a little bit. But if you give him a free release and he’s running deep, it’s hard to catch him.”

Slippery conditions can really do a number on your feet if you don't have the right footwear. Stroll with confidence in Chaco's bestsellers.

Safety Xavier McKinney suggested taking a different approach: “Him, I know when you play man, you kind of got to give him some space. You can’t get too close up on him, or he’s going to beat you deep. That’s like that with a lot of our receivers. They’re all fast. So, seeing those guys on the opposite side, it’s kind of a nightmare. But they definitely, guys like Ruggs, definitely make you better.”

Whether he’s covered or given space, Ruggs is more often than not going to make the catch.

“First off, he’s really fast, and he can make plays,” quarterback Tua Tagovailoa said. “... He had a one-hand grab against LSU, and he had a one-hand grab against Auburn, too. Those are pretty nice.”

Last season, Ruggs stepped into the starting lineup one year after seeing plenty of the field as a freshman. The Montgomery, Ala., native was one of three sophomore starters along with Jerry Jeudy and DeVonta Smith, and Ruggs finished second on the team in receptions and touchdowns.

The 6-foot, 183-pound wide receiver hauled in 46 catches for 741 yards and 11 scores, and his 11 touchdown receptions tied for second in the Southeastern Conference. He also ranked in the top 15 of the league in nearly every receiving category and tallied 20-plus yard gains on 13 of his catches in 2018. Thirty-four of his 46 receptions went for a first down or a touchdown.

The now-junior wide receiver reportedly ran in the 4.25 range in the 40-yard dash earlier this month at the Crimson Tide’s junior pro day. For comparison, the fastest time at this year’s NFL Scouting Combine was 4.30. Current Cincinnati Bengals wideout and former Washington Huskies standout John Ross holds the Combine record after clocking a 4.22-second 40 in 2017.

But the wideout doesn’t just bring speed to the field. He also sets the tone with his physicality, which is something that gets overlooked, according to teammate and fellow receiver DeVonta Smith.

“How physical he is,” Smith said. “No matter if he’s blocking, running his routes, he’s physical.”

Ruggs and Alabama’s receivers will practice one more time this afternoon before taking part in the 2019 A-Day Game at Bryant-Denny Stadium on Saturday, April 13, at 1 p.m. CT (ESPN2).

LINK ]Dilfer: Tua Tagovailoa tops any QB prospect in last two drafts- BamaOnLine- By Charlie Potter
quote:

Five quarterbacks were selected in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft and as many as four could go in the first 32 picks of the 2019 version at the end of the month. But former Super Bowl-winning quarterback and Elite 11 head coach Trent Dilfer, a well-documented fan of Tua Tagovailoa, believes Alabama’s junior is better than any of the quarterback prospects in the last two draft classes.

“He’s the finest prospect I’ve ever seen in my life,” Dilfer told Rich Eisen on Thursday. “And I was with Aaron Rodgers when he was in college, threw with him in the offseason. Not even close to Tua at that stage of their careers. Now, Aaron’s progressed rapidly when he got into the NFL. I’ve never seen (anyone), besides Dan Marino and Aaron Rodgers, to this day, throw a ball better than Tua.

LINK ]Dilfer: Tua Tagovailoa tops any QB prospect in last two drafts- BamaOnLine- By Charlie Potter
quote:

“He checks all the other intangible boxes. He’s got a thick body, thick joints. He needs to learn to play on time better. He does have the Superman complex where he thinks he can make a Superman play out of every play, kind of like Cam Newton. I think that can be trained out of him. I know we trained it out of him in one summer. But if I was an NFL GM or if I was a head coach in the NFL, I’d be begging, begging on my knees for my management to draft Tua or find a way to draft him. I can’t say enough things about -- he’s a one-percenter, I’ll just leave it at that. He’s a one-percenter human being, talent, leader, anything you want to say. He’s a one-percenter.”

Tagovailoa led the country with a 199.4 passer efficiency rating and led the SEC with 48 total touchdowns, 43 of which came through the air to lead the SEC and rank second in the nation. He totaled 4,156 yards of total offense, good for second in the SEC and top-10 nationally, despite not playing a majority of the second halves of UA’s games. Through the air, he sported a 69.0 completion percentage on 245-of-355 passing and totaled 3,966 yards and 43 touchdowns with only six interceptions. He added 57 rushes and 190 yards with five scores on the ground.
