LINK ]Alabama Senior Raekwon Davis Has A Teaching Role - BamaOnLine - By Kirk McNair
quote:

This time a year ago almost no one would have expected Raekwon Davis to be in Alabama’s football camp this spring. He was one of those guys who was expected to be a three-and-done, off to the National Football League Draft.

Maybe he didn’t get the NFL evaluation draft grade he wanted and elected to return, perhaps listening to the advice of his head coach. At least one NFL draft expert doesn’t think that was it, though.

“Don’t worry about his stats,” said the analyst, who expected Davis to leave Alabama after last season. The reason for his dropoff from 69 total tackles as a sophomore to 55 last year, and the fall from a team-leading 8 1/2 sacks to 1 1/8 in 2018 was more about the guy playing next to him. Davis was at defensive end and playing next to Quinnen Williams, regarded by many as the best defensive player in the nation last fall.

LINK ]Alabama Senior Raekwon Davis Has A Teaching Role - BamaOnLine - By Kirk McNair...Continued...
quote:

Davis, a 6-7, 209-pound upcoming senior seems to be enjoying himself and taking seriously his role in Crimson Tide spring practice. Alabama was to complete its 13th of the 15 training days this spring, leading up to Saturday’s A-Day Game.

That role, he said, “is the whole reason I came back — to teach the younger guys and help the team as much as I can to the best of my ability.”

Over and over he comes back to that role as Alabama is rebuilding its defensive line. In addition to Williams, the end opposite Davis, Isaiah Buggs, finished his senior season and is also off to the NFL.

The spring he said has “been fantastic. Just working with the young guys, getting them to guy into the program and help the program and keep the tradition going.”

LINK ]Alabama Senior Raekwon Davis Has A Teaching Role - BamaOnLine - By Kirk McNair...Continued...
quote:

Davis was first-team All-Southeastern Conference as a sophomore and second-team All-America last season. His complete statistics line as a junior showed him with 24 primary tackles and 31 assists, 5 1/2 tackles for loss, and 6 quarterback pressures.

But Davis is determined to be more than a doer this spring. He’s also a mentor to his teammates.

“Every day during practice, there’s going to be a younger guy who’s just not going to get it. It’s [my] job to get him to process it in his head. There are rules around here and that’s how it goes. You’re going to see it every day in practice, a younger guy who is going to need your help, he’s going to need your guidance. Your job is to help him.

LINK ]Alabama Senior Raekwon Davis Has A Teaching Role - BamaOnLine - By Kirk McNair...Continued...
quote:

“That’s my job and that’s what Coach Saban expects me to do.”

Davis said the primary difficulty for young players coming into the Alabama program is the playbook. “You’ve got to learn,” he tells them.

Davis and almost every other position player at Alabama has a new position coach this spring. The new defensive line coach is Brian Baker, the third defensive line coach Davis has played under at Bama.

Like athletes everywhere, Davis sees a new coach as an opportunity to learn new things.

“He’s a great coach, tremendously great coach,” Davis said. “His technique [coaching] is unbelievable, the things he helps us do. He pushes us, motivates us. He sets a high standard for us. There’s no lolly-gagging about nothing with Coach Baker.”

But, Davis said, that doesn’t mean a change in how Alabama plays defense.

“It’s the same,” he said. “Everything stays the same. Nothing really changes. It’s just part of the process.

“You learn different things, but it’s really the same process.”

LINK ]Looking deeper into NFL early exits impact on Alabama football - Al.Com - By Michael Casagrande | mcasagrande@al.com
Long Article on Al.Com - take the link above to read it all.

quote:

For years Nick Saban used his pulpit to talk about the dynamic in play when someone leaves college early for the NFL. He’ll arrive at news conferences -- even Saturday’s after a scrimmage -- with stats ready in his mental filing cabinet to drive home the point he wants to make.

His four-minute thesis statement Saturday included some of the greatest hits with a few notable departures. It made headlines nationally and prompted a response from the player he identified without naming as an example for missing the maximum financial rewards of the NFL.

Raekwon can be a knucklehead, but he is a really good dude and I'm glad this has worked out well for him.

LINK ]How Alabama OL is adjusting to injury, other practice notes - Al.Com - By Michael Casagrande | mcasagrande@al.com
quote:

The 13th practice of Alabama’s spring was greeted by another perfect afternoon of weather in Tuscaloosa. Sunny and in the mid-70s, it looked like a nice day to play some football.

A few notes from the media viewing period:

-- Right tackle Jedrick Wills was not out there after suffering an ankle injury in Saturday’s scrimmage. It looked like Matt Womack moved over from guard to play right tackle. He was the starter at RT in 2017.

-- The right of the first team offensive line included Alex Leatherwood at left tackle, Emil Ekiyor Jr. at left guard, Chris Owens at center, Deonte Brown at right guard and Womack at right tackle.

-- Watching the middle linebackers, it looked like freshman Shane Lee was in the second group with Markail Benton behind the first unit of Dylan Moses and Joshua McMillon.

-- Ben Davis and Terrell Lewis were in black non-contact jerseys with the outside linebackers.

-- Tight end Kedrick James was not spotted at Saturday’s scrimmage but was on the field Tuesday. Fellow tight end Major Tennison was not spotted for a second straight practice Tuesday.

-- There was a lot of mixing and matching when the defensive backs were running through formations. Jalyn Armour-Davis, Josh Jobe and Daniel Wright were cycling through with returning contributors Trevon Diggs, Patrick Surtain II, Xavier McKinney and Shyheim Carter.

-- Former Alabama offensive analyst Alex Mortensen has been around a few times this spring. He left the Tide after last season to be the receivers coach of the Birmingham Iron of the AAF.

LINK ]Daron Payne 2.0? Alabama freshman continues to impress - Al.Com - By Matt Zenitz | mzenitz@al.com
quote:

Less than a week into spring practice, there were people around the Alabama program already comparing the team’s new No. 94 to a recent Crimson Tide star who wore that same number.

Even at that early point, just a few months after DJ Dale first arrived at Alabama, the 6-foot-3, 315-pound freshman from Clay-Chalkville was already looking so good while wearing that No. 94 that one source said at the time: He’s looking like Daron Payne out there.
He still is, according to one of his teammates.

“He plays like Daron Payne,” senior defensive lineman Raekwon Davis said of Dale on Tuesday. “He plays just like Daron Payne.”

Dale has been one of the stars of the spring for Alabama. While Dale wasn’t even ranked among the top 250 players in this year’s recruiting class, people around the Alabama program started taking notice of him right when he got to campus back in December as a mid-year enrollee.

Dale impressed while working with the scout team as the Tide prepared for the College Football Playoff and he’s now looking like a real possibility to be a game one starter as a true freshman.

LINK ]Daron Payne 2.0? Alabama freshman continues to impress - Al.Com - By Matt Zenitz | mzenitz@al.com...Continued...
quote:

Dale has been working with the first-team defense at nose tackle, including during Alabama’s scrimmage on Saturday.

“He’s got good initial quickness, good power, strikes, seems to be pretty conscientious (and) shows a little maturity about being able to go out there and do his job,” Tide coach Nick Saban said.

That last No. 94 for Alabama, Payne, was a dominant figure in the middle of the Tide defensive line, a first-team all-conference player who ended up being a top-15 NFL draft pick.

To be compared to him, especially this early, says something about how impressive this new No. 94 has been during these first few months in Tuscaloosa.

“For a young guy, he plays like he’s been here for a while,” Davis said of Dale. “He’s great, a great lineman.”

Notes from Travis Reier's Instant Analysis:

Major Tennison not seen on practice field

QB's looked good, no balls on the ground,

ILB - no changes in line up (Shane Lee is still matched with Benton in 2nd pairing)

OLB's - Sal was working on Tackling

Secondary - Split field work (incorporated ILB with the DB's - Moses, McMillon, and Benton)

Instant Analysis: Tuesday Travis Reier
Since 2008, BamaOnLine.com's Instant Analysis has been a staple of Crimson Tide football coverage. That won't change in 2019, as we'll continue to provide Alabama fans with insight and interaction fresh from Tuscaloosa via Facebook Live.

quote:

As for items we touched on during the latest edition of IA, they included:

* What the injury to Jedrick Wills means for the offensive line.

* The next step in the development of cornerback Patrick Surtain II.

* After some sloppy play in Saturday's scrimmage, form tackling was a point of emphasis for one position group.

* Tons of interaction in the Q&A segment!

LINK ]Alabama Football Practice Notes: 4/9/2019 TideSports.Com - By Terrin Waack - April 9, 2019
quote:

Alabama held its 13th spring practice Tuesday. It was 75 degrees outside and mostly cloudy. The Crimson Tide worked in full pads.

Prior to practice, UA wide receiver DeVonta Smith, defensive back Trevon Diggs and defensive lineman Raekwon Davis talked about how they’re doing this spring. There’s a video of everything they had to say a few posts above here.

Otherwise, this is what was observed during practice:

Jedrick Wills Jr. was absent, which isn’t surprising. No word on how his MRI went after Alabama coach Nick Saban announced last Saturday that Wills sprained his ankle during the Crimson Tide’s second spring scrimmage.(seems the results showed a sprained ankle?) Without Wills, the offensive line looked like this: Alex Leatherwood, Emil Ekiyor Jr., Chris Owens, Deonte Brown and Matt Womack. Pierce Quick moved up to RG with the 2's

Saban was with the defensive backs per usual. They were split up into two groups — cornerbacks and safeties — and worked in pairs. Patrick Surtain II and Diggs led the cornerbacks, while Jared Mayden and Xavier McKinney led the safeties. Shyheim Carter was there and participated, but he stayed toward the back of the pack in his back non-contact jersey.

Miller Forristall was the first tight end to go through drills. Then, Giles Amos and Cameron Latu, who’s still listed as a linebacker on Alabama’s roster, went in order.

Linebackers Ben Davis and Terrell Lewis were at practice and both in black non-contact jerseys. Lewis stood by with his helmet in his hand. Davis wore his helmet and participated in a limited role.

Eyabi Anoma led the outside linebackers through drills, as Anfernee Jennings stayed off to the side. After Anoma was Christopher Allen, Kevin Harris II, Jarez Parks and then Davis.

As for the inside linebackers, Dylan Moses was in front. Joshua McMillon, Markail Benton, Shane Lee, Jaylen Moody and Ale Kaho followed.

Defensive linemen were going through drills in sets of two. Davis and LaBryan Ray were first. Phidarian Mathis and Stephon Wynn Jr. were second. Tevita Musika and DJ Dale were third. After them, Christian Barmore and Antonio Alfano and then Justin Eboigbe and WO Alex Pearman

That’s it for Tuesday. Alabama will return to practice Thursday, and Saban will address the media afterward. The A-Day game is then Saturday at 1 p.m. in Bryant-Denny Stadium.

From what I’ve seen they are really experimenting hard with the ILB and CB/Safety mix. I’m curious to see how all that shakes out.

Not only for experimenting, you've got to give a bunch of guys ample opportunity to show what they can do, and also see how much they can improve with time and reps. Remember, we're not only looking for starters - we're looking to raise all ships with the high tide.

LINK ]Tua Tagovailoa ready to lead Bama past its winter of discontent Alex Scarborough ESPN Staff Writer

quote:

So maybe Tua Tagovailoa was giving the company line when he said he's still fighting for his starting job at Alabama. Jalen Hurts has moved on to Oklahoma, of course, and with all due respect to his presumptive replacement as the No. 2 quarterback, Mac Jones, the level of competition just isn't the same. Paul Tyson and Tagovailoa's younger brother, Taulia, are solid prospects, but as true freshmen aren't exactly nipping at his heels.

But don't confuse Tagovailoa's suddenly secure footing with a sense of comfort. Unlike a year ago, he didn't return home to Hawaii during the offseason to relax. He didn't bother to decompress at all, in fact. Instead, he said, he went right back to work. During spring break, he stayed on campus and kept grinding.

There are almost five months between this weekend's spring game (Saturday, 2 p.m., ESPN2) and the start of the season, and already there's urgency in the star quarterback's voice.

"It's not a time to have fun right now," he said.

It doesn't seem to matter that he threw for 3,966 yards and 43 touchdowns last season, or that he led his team to a 14-1 record, or that he finished as the runner-up for the Heisman Trophy behind Oklahoma's Kyler Murray. The way it ended still seems to be eating at him.
