LINK ]BamaOnLine - How Tua Tagovailoa can better protect himself in 2019 By Charlie Potter Continued...
quote:
“To me, it’s the responsibility of the quarterback sometimes to protect himself,” Saban said. “We have to get five guys out in pass patterns and have five-man protection, we have six-man protection, we have seven-man protection, we move the pocket, and we’re going to do the things that we think we need to do to help our team win and help Tua be successful.”
It will only take small tweaks.
That includes things like throwing the ball away when things break down and not trying to make a play out of every single play, Saban said. The now-junior signal caller added he needs to learn when to slide and avoid taking unnecessary hits during the spring and over the summer.
“Playing quarterback, they’re not all going to be designed runs, but you also have to extend plays, as well,” Tagovailoa said. “I think what Coach Saban’s trying to say is when I do extend plays, if it’s first down and the sticks are right there and I see someone else, I don’t gotta put my head down and try to get another first down. I can just slide and then we’ve got three more downs hopefully -- two more downs to get the first down. So just little things like that with protecting myself.”
As far as designed quarterback runs go, those have been few and far between for Tagovailoa. In this version of the Crimson Tide’s offense, they will still exist, but coming from the West Coast and wanting to get the ball out quickly, Sarkisian is teaching his quarterbacks to read the field and process what they see in swift fashion before taking off with the football this spring.
“This year Coach Sark is just trying to help us as a quarterback group work on our full-field progressions with our pure progression reads,” Tagovailoa said. “We didn’t have to run as much this year as far as what we have in our playbook now. … It’s really full-field progression reads.
“Last year, we worked more on RPO, and we had that opportunity to perfect it. Now we’re trying to protect full-progression reads, so reading the entire field this year. I think implementing pure progression reads and RPOs is really going to be big for us this season.”
Protecting the quarterback is always going to be a top priority. But jeopardizing an offense that returns its starting quarterback, three starting receivers, two starting offensive linemen and a bevy of other experienced players is not something Saban plans on doing this offseason.
“I don’t know how we can adapt our schemes so that we can guarantee the quarterback is never going to get hit,” Saban said. “I think they’ve been trying to do that for years and years and years in the NFL, and until they change all the rules nobody could ever figure it out. So, for you to expect me to be able to figure it out? I appreciate your confidence, but I’m not capable.”

Nick Saban talks running backs, young wide receivers By Matt Zenitz | mzenitz@al.com
quote:
Nick Saban will address the media around 6 p.m. on Wednesday.
Follow along for live updates:
— Saban thought the players were “really good” on Monday. Then brought up that sometimes players get “the poor-me" attitude, referencing some minor injuries they may be dealing with. That was the case today, he said, though he said it got better as the practice went on.
— He thought the offense played well in the scrimmage on Saturday. Thought the first-team defense was “OK.”
— They’ve spent some time this week doing early prep for some opponents. “It takes some preparation, but our coaches have done a really good job with that.”
— Said Najee Harris and Brian Robinson are both really good players, have both had “really good” springs and that both appear ready to take a step forward in terms of their roles. Said redshirt freshman Jerome Ford has showed some flashes during the spring. Saban said he expects to get some help from young guys at that position but that he’s been really pleased with Harris and Robinson.
— Saban said they’ve moved some guys around on the defensive line. Didn’t get into specifics.
— Jared Mayden has had a good spring and did well in the scrimmage on Saturday, Saban said. Saban said he’s been very encouraged by the spring Mayden’s had.
— Saban was asked about the young wide receivers. Said redshirt freshman Xavier Williams has “made a lot of progress." Also said freshman John Metchie has shown some flashes this spring and that redshirt freshman Slade Bolden has “made some plays.” Said redshirt sophomore Tyrell Shavers is “better.”

I guess I haven't been keeping up with spring practice. Was this injury known?
I hate it for him. Blowing out a knee before you ever take a snap doesn't bode well for a career most of the time. Hope he recovers well.

Robinson will not be part of the team until June. Not sure if this was an injury from his senior season and just getting cleaned up? or something happened just recently. Will have more in a bit

Why Bama RB commit isn’t playing in Under Armour All-America Game
A knee injury apparently prevented Alabama running back commit Keilan Robinson from reporting for the 2018 Under Armour All-American Game on Saturday in Orlando, Florida, and will keep him out of next week's game.
Defensive end Tre’Mon Morris-Brash, Robinson’s teammate at St. John’s College High in Washington, D.C. who is playing in the national all-star game, said the running back is still recovering from a knee injury suffered during the season.
"He'll be fine," Morris-Brash said.
Robinson suffered an apparent knee injury during an Oct. 12 game against Good Counsel (Md.), The Washington Post reported, and Morris-Brash said Robinson "only played like three games" in 2018 because of injuries.
Robinson ran six times for 30 yards against Hoover on Aug. 31, but the game was stopped and postponed by lightning. When the game resumed the next day, Robinson did not dress. Morris-Brash said his teammate missed most of the Hoover game with a hamstring injury.
Morris-Brash praised Robinson’s acceleration and elusiveness and also need just a few words to explain what makes his teammate special. “He runs like a 4.3 40 (yard dash),” Morris-Brash said.
The 5-foot-9, 184-pound Robinson is one of three Alabama commitments who did not sign on Dec. 19, apparently waiting until the traditional February signing date. despite making a visit to Alabama in early December.

LINK ]Recent Alabama practices feature opponent prep, 'Poor mes' (BOL | w/ "poor mes" video)
quote:
![]()
Nick Saban was pleased with how his Alabama team responded on the practice field Monday following the first scrimmage of the spring. Wednesday? Not so much.
“To summarize the week, I thought the players were really good on Monday,” Saban said. “We had to go inside because the field was a little too wet. Today, every now and then, as a coach you feel like people get the ‘Poor mes.’ If you know what the ‘Poor mes’ are, they’re exactly what I said. ‘Poor me, my leg hurts. Poor me, my shoulder hurts. Poor me, it’s hot out here today. Poor me, I don’t feel like practicing. To me, I’m not big on the ‘Poor mes.’
“I like people not to do what they feel like doing but to choose to do what they need to do to get better, and that has been very, very good all spring. Today, it could have been better. I think practice went better as we went. We need to keep working on that.”
Early in Wednesday’s practice, Saban said the players sent him a signal that the “mental toughness” and “ability to sustain in difficult circumstances” need to be points of emphasis this offseason.
The Crimson Tide is two-thirds of the way through its spring season and will have one more practice Friday, April 5, before returning to Bryant-Denny Stadium for its second scrimmage this Saturday.
While the “Poor mes” surfaced Wednesday, the 13th-year head coach has been relatively happy with his team’s performance up to this point of the spring. On a team that’s going to rely on many of its young players this fall, it’s important for all of the members of Alabama’s 2019 squad to play through the excuses and mistakes in order for them to be ready for the upcoming season.

That starts on the practice field and carries over into the game-like scrimmages.
“I think you learn a lot about individual players’ ability to go play,” Saban said. “I think good coaches are trying to reinforce players in practice after every play, so they’re telling them they did this well or you need to do it this way or you made a mental error, you’re getting corrected or you did a good job or whatever. So, you’re trying to reinforce guys on every play. Well, sometimes are kind of depending on that reinforcement all the time in practice, and in the game, there’s no coach out there.
“I used to coach like that when I was an assistant, and we’d have a scrimmage as the Cleveland Browns, and (Bill) Belichick would chew my butt out, man. He’d say, ‘Let the players play.’ I was like, ‘Wow, I’ve never had my butt chewed out before for coaching, teaching.’ But I have to say the same things sometimes to our coaches now, aight, because there’s a time where you’ve just got to let the players play. Because in a game, they’ve got to know what to do, they’ve got to know how to do it, they can’t depend on somebody else to make a call for them, they can’t depend on somebody else to recognize for them.
“So, we actually do stuff in practice now and we do team ... I make the coaches get off the field, make the calls and let the players play. And when you get in the scrimmage then they’re more ready for the scrimmage because they’ve got to go out there and execute and make own calls and do things on their own. So, that’s the next step of guys being ready to contribute and play. It’s different to be able to do it in practice than it is to be able to do it in the game.”
The Tide still has five more spring practices to go, including a pair of scrimmages, but the games are slowly approaching, too. Alabama’s season opener against Duke in Atlanta is now less than five months away. Because of that, Saban and company started preparing for a few of the teams on their 2019 regular-season schedule during the back half of its 15-practice spring season.
“We have spent time this week on other opponents,” Saban said. “We started that this week, which we usually do this time of year. Things that we don’t really see much from the offense and things that the offense sees that they don’t really see from the defense. So, that’s something that's been very beneficial, I think situationally to a lot of players. That’s a really beneficial thing and it takes a lot of preparation but our coaches have done a really good job of that.”
