Texas just fired the winningest coach in program history who went to ncaa tourney in 16 of 17 seasons and they are reportedly topping out the next salary around $3m. Marshall may ultimately decide to go there but it won't be bc they offer more $$ or because "care" more about bball.

@ChipBrownHD: #Texas AD Steve Patterson's short list of replacements expected to include WSU's Gregg Marshall, VCU's Shaka Smart, Dayton's Archie Miller.

@GoodmanESPN: Texas athletic director Steve Patterson has an NBA background, and one source told me not to be shocked if he also considers NBA guys.

We should play chicken on Marshall, see how high Texas will go. If they get him, it shouldn't be a bargain.

Not no, but hell no.

Approach him firmly and professionally. Make him the offer that will make him accept. Let's get our basketball program to a higher level.

We don't need to bullshite around and get passed on because we are playing some stupid game. That will leave us in scramble mode with a coach that won't generate any excitement for the fan base and keep our program in irrelevancy.

Terrible idea to put it kindly.

Sources told Yahoo Sports that Marshall already had signaled Alabama not to waste its energy putting together a whopper offer for his services, because he had his eyes on Texas. So this conceivably could be a short courtship – if anything can get done simply in Austin. (At Alabama, the search to replace Anthony Grant could be getting dicey. Marshall is off the table and VCU coach Shaka Smart is extremely unlikely to replace his former boss, Grant. Archie Miller can afford to stay at Dayton and wait for the right time and place – and Alabama seems like neither. Latest name in the mix in Tuscaloosa is Minnesota coach Richard Pitino, who may be parlaying his father’s connection to former Alabama coach C.M. Newton, who certainly has the ear of decision makers at ‘Bama.)

Should've known it was heading that direction. Sucks, but we move on.

If anyone has 247, lucky answered a thread about 30 minutes ago but I don't know what he said.

I mean it's completely different than what Parrish has been saying so maybe he's wrong

It's been 48 hours. If he wanted the Alabama job, this would be over. It's more likely he's waiting on Texas. Should know soon. If he wants that job, they'll race to him once Barnes is gone.

I am favoriting the hell out of a bunch of 'Gregg Marshall isn't going to Bama, no way no how' tweets. If we actually land the guy I'll be bringing some heat to a lot of people - especially national basketball talking heads (looking at you Forde).

(Side note: Richard Pitino better not pick up speed on this thing. Do not want the bball equivalent of Derek Dooley, Skip Holtz, or Mike Shula. You WILL see a fan see apathetic toward basketball if they don't make a "name/splash" hire.)

I wouldn't trust Pat Forde or Yahoo! Sports. They were wanting Saban to go to Texas so TIFWIW. His article is stupid, basically saying Texas wants Marshall, Marshall wants to go to Texas and according to sources told Bama to not waste its time cause he's going to Texas, then at the end he says Texas may not get Marshall. Genius.

Not an insider, but he follows basketball closely. The closest thing we have to a basketball super fan.

Didn't Forde say in his article that Shaka Smart wouldn't likely take the Bama job to replace his former boss Grant? When did Shaka work for Grant? I may be wrong, but I think Shaka replaced Grant as an assistant at UF when Grant went to VCU and then replaced Grant as HC at VCu when Grant came to Bama. I don't think Grant has ever been Shaka's boss.

I don't think Forde is lying. I know we're hopeful, but this one seems done. Which isn't surprising given that we haven't heard anything in 48 hours.
