Would you rather have 300 yards passing and a couple of TD passes and couple of picks, and a more effective run game and more rested defense in the fourth? Or would you prefer 120 yards passing and no picks, third down conversions, or points? Oh.. and defense that collapses from exhaustion in the fourth quarter.
I’m not sure what you find so funny.
Baker Mayfield has one int ever 73 passes. Hurts has 1 every 224 passes. Who would you rather have as a starting qb?

You say we have to pass to set up the run. I say it's the other way around.
If the defense doesn't have to respect the passing game, they can key on the run. Saban himself has said that "they've changed some of the ways routes are run so he doesn't always have to read both sides of the field."... LINK
quote:
We have shown this year that our run game is just as dominant but we dont commit to it
So according to some people, since Saban and Daboll haven't played Tua more, it proves that they are smart, but since they don't commit to the run, it proves they are not?
Without a legitimate passing game you can commit all you want to and against good defenses it will just get you beat. 3rd down efficiency is a very good indicator of how that'll work for you. We converted 3 of 11 3rd downs. Passed for 38 yards till the 65 yard hail mary on the last play of the game. Scored 14 whole points. Hurts favorite play is roll out of the pocket and throw the ball away, and if he ever rolls to the left side of the line it's nearly certain that it'll be an incomplete pass. If I know this, the defense damn sure knows it.

There are plenty of times since Saban has been here where we have pounded the ball successfully without the threat of great passing game against a good defense, and dominated the other team. Plenty.
We just haven't even really tried that this year it seems. Running the ball opens up the passing game. That is a fact.
Another fact is that against the best defense we played this year, we absolutely didn't even attempt to do that with our best running back, or even our second best running back. Jalen might not be a great passer, but he is good enough to pass off of an effective, bruising running game IMO.

So Saban and Daboll are stupid?
edit: By the way, we average 23 passes per game and 44 rushes per game, though a good lot of that is Jalen Hurts. It's a one man show sometimes, and it's not working. And yeah, that's 67 plays per game. Pretty shitty these days.

Logically, both have to be true. A stronger run game will make passing easier and a more dangerous passing game loosens the defense and makes the run game more effective.
What you need is balance. And we ain’t got it.

No they are brilliant. Because they know that Tua is not “ready”.

No no no. They are brillant about that part but stupid about the play calling. Makes perfectly good sense.

I'm just happy we have given Tua plenty of time to find his feet in the system and get better as opposed to throwing him to the flames as a true freshman. Hurts was the right qb for us the last two years - if Tua is as advertised, and i think he is, I anticipate him winning the starting job in the offseason.
Hopefully Tua thrives in whatever role the coaches give him, maybe some change-up packages and a few drives sprinkled in throughout the game, and gives us a needed spark but avoids the costly turnovers.

Apparently they are also stupid about who and where it play the offensive linemen. Many threads on that ... and no viscious attacks defending Cotton or whoever else is being criticized.

No. Is that what you got from my statement? Obviously they are aware that an effective run game opens up the passing game. They know more about it than us, obviously, so I agree, there is a reason. But at the same time, I don't know, it just seems kind of crazy to me that our best RB gets the ball only 6 times in the biggest game of the season.

I think that was largely a gameplan / gameflow thing. First half we tried to attack Auburn at their weak point on D, pass defense. Didn't work and came out in second half running. TD on first drive, 3 and out second drive and then I think the clipping call happened the next drive (maybe the one after) and we couldn't get out of that hole. At that point we started to get down and fight the clock and the pound it out running option wasn't a great option.
Certainly could have gotten them the ball more, but i also don't think it had a lot to do with game flow. Also, and this is just my opinion, but i am not sure if or oline is one that can just line it up and dominate consistently throughout the game if the defense decides to commit and stop the run and we may get stuck on third downs (also get behind the chains due to penalties).
Finally, I think Daboll has yet to truly implement his offensive system - coming from the patriots I imagine we will be looking for more TE action, two TE set, etc. and given the lack of the use of TE in Kiffin's offense, this year is likely somewhat of a transition as we get the players and experience in the right places necessary for Daboll to fully implement what he wants - that is all just speculation but it seems reasonable to me at least.

^^^^^This. Mercer was in our backfield on running plays. MERCER! I'm sorry, but we do not have a truly dominant offensive line. They are good for one play or two, and then they are getting beat. No consistency. Lining up in third and short is a bit of a crap shoot as to whether we will convert on the ground. They most certainly cannot run block on a stacked box. Against a defense like Climpson's
they most assuredly are not going to be able to kack up and run the all as an offensive game plan.
If they try, it will have to be with the little jet sweep package. Simply we will have to be able to throw the ball down the field with some consistency in order to be effective.

I say start Jalen. With that being said, Auburn 2016 may have been the only good defense that Hurts was even serviceable throwing the ball. Throw in LSU this year because drops were an issue. Most of the time we have to rely on a big play downfield to even get over 100 yards. That isn’t a poor throwing game that is certifiably anemic. Especially considering that he is throwing to at least 3 guys that will play in the NFL both years

Have we ever ran the jump pass with Hurts? It world be deadly.

Hurts would just hop, never actually releasing the ball. Hop hop hop hop hop ....
Just joking. Take it easy.

That is only illegal in basketball. This just might work. :)

Yeah I agree that converting 3rd downs via the air is gonna have to happen. To prevent 3 and outs at a minimum.
If we can find a way to play balanced that will be the key. Whether that means implementing a scheme that seems to work for Hurts, such as quick outs and no slow developing plays, or Tua coming in and playing well, or having packages for both. With several weeks of prep time I hope they figure it out.
