That said, if Colt McCoy is your entire offense, then it is stupid to risk him getting injured by running him into the teeth of our defense. If you are a national championship team, you should also be able to score a TD with 3 chances from the goal line no matter who the QB is.

Agreed. If you're a one-man offense, why run a play where you expose that one man to injury? Every one acts like McCoy would've just had his way with us that game...he was actually very hit or miss that year. He had some very sub-par games that year, especially against Nebraska and Oklahoma, and actually had better numbers the year before...

Speaking of that game, it just felt like we had a bunch of grown men on defense. Dareus, Ro, Arenas, Cody, etc. You knew they could handle any situation and would never get intimidated. It hasn't felt that way on defense in a few years. That's the kind of elite defense I want.

Agree here as well...and I think the main ingredient we've been missing recently is a defensive play-caller that really knows the defense we run. Having Ro out there was like having a coach on the field. That '09 D was not the most talented that we've had, but they played to their potential and had great leadership...

.but when you consider most of the 2009 UF team's offensive and defensive rankings increased significantly from the previous year, I don't see how people can say that the '09 Gators were not in the same class as their '08 team.

I see what you are saying, but I definitely remember '09 UF struggling in games. They might have beefed up their stats against nobodies, but I remember them stalling in multiple games. They were a shell of the '08 offense without Harvin IIRC.

I also miss some of the swag our Defense used to have with alpha leaders like Rolo, Arenas and Dre Kirk. Guys were not arrogant in a bad way, but they stepped on the field confident and others guys fed off that and the other teams noticed it too. Depriest was a good role players, but was never going to be the Alpha that our defenses fed off of, neither was Collins for that matter. We need that Alpha personality again on D.

We will benefit from a leadership position from our DL next year. We just need an ILB type to emerge with experience and knowledge of our system. Ragland? Foster? Hamilton? Could we see Lee on the inside or maybe Devall has enough speed to play there. We will have to wait and see.

I remember it differently (I am an old man) so I guess we'll have to agree to disagree. While Harvin was a more explosive player (he was their #1 receiver/#2 rusher in 2008), Demps & Rainey were pretty explosive in their own right. In 2009, UF had 2 players who exceeded Harvin's '08 receiving numbers and 2 who exceeded his rushing total. Tebow improved his own numbers in passing yardage, rushing yardage, and completion %. I think the only area where UF slipped from '08 to '09 was scoring offense (#4 to #10)...and I think they played in more close games than they did in '08...but I still don't think there was much of a drop-off, if there was one...

I hear ya, I might be remembering incorrectly.

I just remember them struggling offensively against Arkansas, MSU, Vandy, UT, and South Carolina.

Recruiting is pretty top notch.. Saban and the guys will figure out what's plaguing the secondary and will hopefully get it fixed this coming football season.

Heck, Oregon for the most part can handle modern and pro-style offenses.
Oregon is able to do this because their offense is so prolific that it makes opposing offenses one dimensional. Their DL can then pin their ears back, and their secondary can go for takeaways.
