I agree leaders are sucking it up but the WHO is included in that.

There is plenty of added criticism for WHO if it really matters and that's my singular point. This is a problem to quote "The Martian," "we are going to have to science the sh!t out of this." Until science gives us the vaccine or this virus simply decides to leave us, this speculation and maneuvering when isolation is over and when it's business as usual by mouthy politicians is just rhetoric. Getting hit by a second wave or watching corona survivors test positive again will trump any political strategy and we are back where we started.

Again they can easily reinstate the funding for next year. Asking politely isn’t going to cause any changes. Freezing funding can

I struggle to see how ceding any opportunity for the Chinese to further increase their already expanding soft power is a good idea.

It's a horrible idea, the problems with the WHO notwithstanding. All that announcement sought to do was put blame somewhere other than the White House. It was nakedly transparent.

Posted this earlier in the thread, but here's a more extended timeline to go with that Tweet

We can only wonder whether accurate and timely information from China would have altered the way the U.S. government, the American people, and the world prepared for the oncoming danger of infection.
quote:

Some point in late 2019: The coronavirus jumps from some animal species to a human being. The best guess at this point is that it happened at a Chinese “wet market.”

December 30: Dr. Li Wenliang [China] sent a message to a group of other doctors warning them about a possible outbreak of an illness that resembled severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS).

January 1: The Wuhan Public Security Bureau issued summons to Dr. Li Wenliang, accusing him of “spreading rumors.” Two days later, at a police station, Dr. Li signed a statement acknowledging his “misdemeanor” and promising not to commit further “unlawful acts.”

Also that day, an employee of one genomics company received a phone call from an official at the Hubei Provincial Health Commission, ordering the company to stop testing samples from Wuhan related to the new disease and destroy all existing samples.

According to a New York Times study of cellphone data from China, 175,000 people leave Wuhan that day.

January 3: China’s National Health Commission, the nation’s top health authority, ordered institutions not to publish any information related to the unknown disease, and ordered labs to transfer any samples they had to designated testing institutions, or to destroy them.

January 14: The World Health Organization echoes China’s assessment: “Preliminary investigations conducted by the Chinese authorities have found no clear evidence of human-to-human transmission of the novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) identified in Wuhan, China.”

January 19:
The Chinese National Health Commission declares the virus “still preventable and controllable.”

January 23: Chinese authorities announce their first steps for a quarantine of Wuhan. By this point, millions have already visited the city and left it during the Lunar New Year celebrations.

February 4: Mayor of Florence [Italy] urged residents to hug Chinese people to encourage them in the fight against the novel coronavirus. “I’m not a virus. I’m a human. Eradicate the prejudice.”

Again, NOT my point. We have tens of thousands of scientists who are working hard on at least 70 different strains of the corona vaccine as we speak. If help comes, you can look hard right there. The virus can also leave us as quickly as it came on its own. There is plenty of historical merit for just that occurrence. Though I'm sure many will quickly declare it an act of God, still, we move on with our lives after picking up the pieces.

Either way, it's not Trump, or governors, or WHO that decides when it's really over. It's funerals.

Mobile hardly had any reported cases in the early stages. A lot of that was they didn’t have many testing kits. The lack of confirmed cases there likely gave people there a false sense of security. But also, they also get a lot of people there for Mardi Gras. It was likely a vector like New Orleans, just on a much smaller scale.

The WHO shamelessly regurgitated China's lies about the virus until February.

Sure. Didn’t say they didn’t. But then so did Trump.

Trump on Jan 24th:
"China has been working very hard to contain the Coronavirus. The United States greatly appreciates their efforts and transparency. It will all work out well. In particular, on behalf of the American People, I want to thank President Xi!"

Trump on FEB 10:
"Looks like by April, you know, in theory, when it gets a little warmer, it miraculously goes away."

"China, I spoke with President Xi, and they're working very, very hard. And I think it's going to all work out fine."

Trump on Feb 24th:
"The Coronavirus is very much under control in the USA. We are in contact with everyone and all relevant countries. CDC & World Health have been working hard and very smart. Stock Market starting to look very good to me!"

Feb 26th:
"When you have 15 people, and the 15 within a couple of days is going to be down to close to zero, that's a pretty good job we've done."

Trump was lock-step with everything WHO said the entire way. In fact, they often said almost the exact things, the day after he did.

He absolutely knew -- along with a lot of higher level officials unless we have the most inept international intelligence gathering in the world -- that this was very bad in China at that time.

Not sure why so many people want to completely hide the fact that Trump dropped the ball getting the country as prepared as it needed to be (even if you can argue that it would be some level of economic disaster regardless).

EXCLUSIVE: There is increasing confidence that COVID-19 likely originated in a Wuhan laboratory not as a bioweapon, but as part of China's effort to demonstrate that its efforts to identify and combat viruses are equal to or greater than the capabilities of the United States, multiple sources who have been briefed on the details of early actions by China's government and seen relevant materials tell Fox News.

This may be the "costliest government coverup of all time," one of the sources said.

The sources believe the initial transmission of the virus was bat-to-human, and that "patient zero" worked at the laboratory, then went into the population in Wuhan.

The “increasing confidence” comes from classified and open-source documents and evidence, the sources said. Fox News has requested to see the evidence directly

Documents detail early efforts by doctors at the lab and early efforts at containment. The Wuhan wet market initially identified as a possible point of origin never sold bats, and the sources tell Fox News that blaming the wet market was an effort by China to deflect blame from the laboratory, along with the country's propaganda efforts targeting the U.S. and Italy.

U.S. Embassy officials warned in January 2018 about inadequate safety at the Wuhan Institute of Virology lab and passed on information about scientists conducting risky research on coronavirus from bats, The Washington Post reported Tuesday.

There were doctors and journalists who were "disappeared" warning of the spread of the virus and its contagious nature and human to human transmission. China moved quickly to shut down travel domestically from Wuhan to the rest of China, but did not stop international flights from Wuhan.

Don't you find it just a bit odd that 3 of the 4 most recent pandemic threats (SARS, MERS, H5N1 "bird" flu, and COVID-19) originated in China and 3 of the 4 were coronaviri originating in bats? And that there's a virology lab in Hunan that has been mentioned as a security concern?

The man is fought on every decision he makes. He is called every name in the book and attacked regardless of right or wrong. Shut down travel from China & was attacked non-stop in spite of it being absolutely the right call to make. People see through the facade that is presented by so-called news people and that is why he was elected.

Keep up the good fight because whether you realize it or not it is only making him stronger.
