From this mornings practice:

•AJ McCarron barked at a teammate during a passing drill. We’ve noticed more of that than previous seasons. As he tries to hold others accountable, the senior quarterback seems to be taking his leadership to another level.
•Early in the first of two periods that members of the news media were allowed to observe, coach Nick Saban snapped at the cornerbacks as they ran through the same drill that we see every day. “Everybody in the country is doing this same (bleep),” he said.
•Tight ends/special teams coach Bobby Williams isn't happy, and he's letting others know. Rather colorfully, we might add.

•Senior cornerback Deion Belue continues to practice with his left calf taped. His left, foot, too, but he seems to be moving well.
•Belue is paired with senior John Fulton on a drill in which cornerbacks pair up. Before you conclude that Fulton is running ahead of sophomore Geno Smith, consider that Smith spends time with the safeties for at least one period. As we have noted previously, that probably is because Smith is targeted for duty at the “star” position, at which he looked good at the end of his freshman season.
•Junior wide receiver DeAndrew White is wearing protective padding on his right elbow.
•Sophomore wide receiver Amari Cooper’s left hand still is taped, but if anything else is bothering him, we can’t tell.
•Sophomore inside linebacker Reggie Ragland is practicing without the heavy wrapping on his right foot that we saw Thursday. We continue to marvel at how quickly Alabama players recover from small problems.
•Sophomore Dillon Lee is practicing with the outside linebackers. His left hand is taped.
•A crew from “60 Minutes” is still here, gathering material for a report on Alabama football that will air this fall on the CBS news show.

I don't think I've ever seen a single positive thing reported on 60 Minutes.

What about the episode where they detailed Bernie Madoff's heroic efforts to expose Wall Street for all of its corruption by using fraudulence for the greater good? Oh, wait a minute..

-- We asked Ryan Kelly on Thursday if the Crimson Tide had been working more on its pass blocking. He essentially said it was 50-50. We asked this because all we see the offensive line doing is pass-blocking drills whenever we're out there. That was the focus during today's viewing period.

-- Though it was the second practice of the day and less than 20 hours before the first scrimmage, energy was high. Drills were moving at a fast pace. Guessing there was a lot of Gatorade consumed this afternoon.

-- Dillon Lee was again working with the outside linebackers. Might be the first time all camp we've seen him in the same place for two consecutive practices.

-- During one particular drill that included reserves, Kellen Williams, Chad Lindsay and Grant Hill were working on the left side of the offensive line while Isaac Luatua, Bradley Bozeman, Brandon Hill and Leon Brown worked on the right.

-- Remember when we mentioned how the quarterbacks were divided at the start of camp? It hasn't changed. AJ McCarron, Alec Morris and Cooper Bateman are in one group while Blake Sims, Parker McLeod and Luke Del Rio are in the other.

-- The running backs are still handling their business based on seniority, it appears. Today, in order, it was T.J. Yeldon, Kenyan Drake, Dee Hart, Derrick Henry, Alvin Kamara, Altee Tenpenny and Tyren Jones.

-- As far as the wide receivers go, Amari Cooper, DeAndrew White, Raheem Falkins and ArDarius Stewart have been lining up at the X. Kevin Norwood, Kenny Bell and Robert Foster are at the Y and Christion Jones and Chris Black are in the slot.

-- Alabama athletic director Bill Battle was on the sidelines for tonight's practice.

What's next?

The Crimson Tide will head to Bryant-Denny Stadium on Saturday for its first scrimmage of camp. It will start sometime in the mid-afternoon and be closed to the public. Reporters won't be watching, either

guys and gals..What do you expect to come out of the first scrimmage. Anything new in the way of pecking order or depth chart with movers up or down. I expect some of the DL who are getting high praise that are true frosh to move into the 2 deep.

I think Falkins will have a good day, the DB's will get somewhat burned and hope to see the run game have a mediocre day, with flashes of brilliance. I feel the run game will be fine, but will be nice to see some run stopping from the defense.

with the a plus qB play and the A plus WR play our DB's are going to learn a lot in the next 3 weeks and won't play all year against a better QB, WR tandem.

VA Tech will be a pro style and I see a lot of our base D

He said he wasn't happy with the DBs, but I'd just ignore it. He has never been happy with the DBs.

Notes from Saban press conference :

-- First-team offense and first-team defense did well, made good plays and showed toughness.

-- Older players have more mental toughness and can play to their max.

-- Young players were sloppy. Made some good plays and mental mistakes.

-- It's a great opportunity to show younger players what they need to do to improve.

-- "I'm not at all disappointed in where we are. We're just going to keep on keeping on."

-- AJ McCarron played well but got his foot stepped on. His foot is bruised, but it's not a problem. He did not participate in the two-minute drill at the end.
-- Amari Cooper had four catches, three for touchdowns.

-- Jalston Fowler looked good in the passing game.

-- Many running backs "all did some good things."

-- Cornerback Deion Belue did not participate because of a hamstring issue.

-- Freshman LB Reuben Foster suffered a stinger.

-- Derrick Henry made some good runs.

-- T.J. Yeldon didn't run often but ran well.

-- Freshman RB Altee Tenpenny "ran it well."

-- Fowler will contribute this fall as a RB and an H-back.

-- Offensive line didn't play with a lot of power. There's room to improve.

-- "This scrimmage tells us who we should be working with."

-- It sounded as if the defense didn't shine.

-- All in all, Saban seems pleased with the skill players but not the guys in the trenches
