Q was great. The rest blah. Davis was played better last year.

This is what I mean by overeactiveness... Buggs had a breakout year, but no one wants to talk about that because he got hurt and they can't get past the fact that we had Davis gain a bunch of weight that killed his explosiveness.

He bulked up significantly in order to play in the interior of the line, you can see it in person especially, it killed a lot of his explosiveness, combine that with the fact that he does get easily frustrated when things aren't working and you end up with a player that struggled. Kul could have done more to get the effort from him, but the decision to bulk up is the root of the issue.

The official roster lists him gaining 10 pounds, but I'm confident that is not the weight he was at the start of the season.

Where are you seeing that he bulked up? He didn't as far as I can see

I think Quinnen and LaBryan Ray gained a little bad weight too that they'd have been better off without.

I can only talk from my observations and the roster, but I would agree that we bulked up dlinemen that really would've been better off at their previous year weights. Honestly looking at the miami dline under kul they also were a bit heavier, have to wonder if that was a thing for him?
Edit: Several miami dlinemen slimmed down under searrels (the current dline coach) and also performed better...

Ray is too big and I believe they put too much weight on Miller as well

The rest blah.

Buggs wasn't blah. He had a really big year and he was playing incredibly before he hurt his knee. He went from 1.5 sacks and 4 TFL as a junior to 9.5 sacks and 13.5 TFL this year.

Davis definitely regressed for whatever reason. I do think he seemed way less explosive. My one complaint was our lack of a rotation there, but maybe we just didn't trust the reserves to play. I would have liked to have seen us develop some more guys.

24/7 composite list Davis as 327 in high school. I'm not sure what his ideal weight is, but I saw him quit on plays multiple times this season. It was a bad year for him and apparently the draft guys told him as much

Saban is so weird about rotations and experience. Very willing on offense, defense unless he implictly trusts the backups, they only see time in the 4th, even when we had games sewn up in the 3rd. I would agree that Linebackers needed all the reps they could get, but we could've rotated in dlinemen significantly more often.

I still believe 9 should have played more during the season.

When I TA'ed a class for him in Summer 17, he was down to 300. He was very proud of all of the work he had done to gain muscle and lose the fat. (The activity was talking about something we loved to do and what we sacrificed in order to do it. For most of my students it was something outdoorsy or a hobby, his was football.)

This admittedly is why I am way less critical of him than others on this board. Football for him is a way to take care of his family and I know it means a lot to him. Hearing him talk about his life in various activities has me rooting for him, even when he does stupid knuckleheaded things like getting shot right before FSU or losing his mind against OU...

He really is. I don't understand why we have to rotate all three DL out at once. Why not let guys go hard for four or five plays and then let a reserve come in for two good snaps? It's just weird how we bring in a whole new group for like one series in each half. I feel like our DL got gassed at times this year, and it wasn't because hurry-up teams wouldn't let us sub.

Ray looked good every time I saw him in the game. Looked good as a freshman too. I'm not sure why he doesn't play more often.

I know that people on this board want to jump to the conclusion that if Golding was calling the plays for most of our big games, he must be part of the problem, but I don't think it's fair to judge Golding when he hadn't been the DC for the important formative parts of this season.

I'm going to be honest, if I was Golding, I don't believe I would have wanted it leaked that I was the play caller

I agree, but the fact that Saban wants him here and showed Tosh the door even with his recruiting ability tells me Saban doesn't see it as necessarily a playcalling issue.
