My thoughts on the first game, what are yours?

We had some rough moments, but overall a good game...
Need to clean up the penalties, but most of those came from young guys that will learn. And one was total BS. Coker started off rough, but got better. His sense of urgency got better as the game went on, and the O-line gelled better as the game went on. Coker needs to be able to hit those deep passes though.. he under threw some TDS. Need to fix the kicking game STAT.
But overall not a bad game, was excited about the pass rush we had on D, Three or 4 sacks, quite a few hurries, and a couple of knocked down passes were a pleasant surprise. Run D was great from the start, which is always the main goal.
Overall I was pretty happy. Just need some work and some young players to come along.

I can't remember all the deep balls now. The two I remember:
The one to Ridley was the right call. Great recovery by the DB. He did have Drake open in the flat, but Ridley was open. Could have been a slight underthrow.
Then that one that was really late/underthrown to I believe Stewart.
Hopefully he gets some guys open deep vs MTSU next week to get his deep ball into rhythm.

Oops should have put this in the other thread... it's late, I'm tired, and a bit intoxicated.

There were three deep balls under thrown by Coker I recall, two were fairly early in the game. One was right before the half I believe. They weren't horrible, just would have been TD's if he had led the receiver.

I think the one right before the half was overthrown actually, but same logic applies.
Wasn't Sims not looking good on the deep balls in the opener last year? Can't remember. If so, he eventually got into a good rhythm with them. Hopefully that happens for Coker.
I think Drake could be a guy who should get more looks deep. He's great on those short passes that he turns into big gains, but I think he can get behind defenses like he did against Florida.

First one was a great play by the DB. Knocked it out of Ridley's hands. Could make a case for a slight underthrow.
I put the 2nd one on Ardarius. He slowed up for a second, which led to the ball being a bit overthrown.
3rd one was just a badly undethrown ball
A lot of this will get better as they get more used to each other.

Yeah, sims was rough with the deep balls as well. Unfortunately I didn't get to watch a lot of the games last year so I don't really know how much he improved. But every first year QB has those issues and tend to improve as the time goes on.
I was very impressed with Cooper Bateman as well. His passes looked quicker and cleaner, and he is great on his feet... His problem is obviously his decision making, game managing, etc... which should improve over time. He got a lot of good PT.. Coker looked better decision wise. managing the game, etc as the game went on, but Bateman wasn't far behind and looked better with passing and running..
Could be a tight battle at QB unless one really pushes ahead of the other.

I thought Coker was clearly the better option of the two. Bateman didn't really try anything downfield and I just felt nervous watching him back there.
I honestly think the only reason he came in is because we are hoping to give Ole Miss two different looks to prepare for.

Revenge game. I'm looking forward to it. I'm hoping Henry trucks Nkemdiche.

I have to disagree here completely... I though Bateman looked ton's better right off the bat... He completed 4 of 4 and was driving for a score on his first drive. But after that he made some poor decisions and some not perfect throws. He may have tried something deep downfield, but I don't recall it.
The fact he came in as early as he did (late third) (with the score being safe but not over yet) and played it out to me means the staff is giving him a true look... Don't get me wrong... I think it's coker's job to lose.. but Bateman isn't far behind.

What did everyone think of the offense in terms of the scheme? I'm sure we haven't even began to show everything we've got, but still, I loved it.

One of the most important thing that came from this game (if not the most important)

Honestly, I worked all week and today and was pretty tired watching the game. But I didn't see anything special scheme wise other than some up tempo hurry up.
I felt like we played bama ball for the most part... We shut down their run game. We established our control of the LoS... and we ran the ball, complimented it with some passes... Then just made their asses quit and took over for the most part.

I don't understand this. He didn't look that good to me.... In his short sample, he let the play clock run down, check down a lot (granted not much time), some ok balls that Calvin Ridley yanked out of the air, floated a ball to Harris in the backfield and almost got him killed.

The under throw was not good, but the WR there can not wait on the ball to come to him, great WR's like Coop come back and high point the ball, then the DB would have been crap out of luck.Young WR will learn, bad throw, but was catchable.
Most of the P.I's were BS.
The defense maintained their offense for the most part.
We ran the ball well, and threw some waggles and screens and got the ball to the T.E. more.
I liked what I saw.

Here is a recurring thought; Fire Bobby Williams. He is worthless.

Well, like I said I thought he looked better starting off, but then made some poor decisions and throws.
Bateman came out hot and then screwed up some.
Coker came out screwing up some, then played a solid game.

Word.
What I don't get is not letting Morris or Cooper throw more while they are in. I understand TOP, running the clock down, not trying to run up the score but we need to know more and we don't have a large sample size.
I have a feeling unless Coker has a monumental breakdown. It's his job.

Well, not to criticize you, but what you don't understand is a QB's complete job.
QB's jobs are much more than just throwing the ball. The job consists of tons of things... First off it's being a leader, making sure the team has the right players in, then its reading the D (usually with help from the OC for young QBs)... making audibles and adjustments depending on the D and making sure players are in place for that.. THEN comes the play....
The QB may have made wonderful moves, decisions, directions, etc.. and it turns into just a 5-10 yard run for the RB when the play call was a pass. But he made the right decisions and audibles.
That's what being a game manager is all about.
That's the things fans don't understand... it's not just the passing, completions, etc.. it's also how well they lead and manage the offense.

Adam Griffith was the #1 kicker in the nation coming out of high school. If he was at any other position at this point, he would be simply considered a bust alongside Tyler Love and B.J. Scott.
