Is it a hot take to think Saban is actually IN his prime right now?

The reason I say this is because it seems to me he’s done some of his best coaching lately in whatever form that might come in. A lot of Alabama’s woes can be observed in other teams hires of our recent coordinators. New England is terrible and Ole Miss’ defense is putrid at times.

Nick had the luxury in his early to perceived prime years of having top notch “recruiters” like Tosh Lupoi just sitting around on staff going all around the country and nabbing dudes in places like the Bay Area. Now don’t get me wrong, I know we’ve been pulling dudes in droves the whole 2010s and 2020s but I feel the mid 2010s staff had better feel for evaluation and development than some of our more recent staffs have.

Which brings me back to the fact that I think Nick, really since 2017, has chained himself down with god awful coordinators. Alabama still is chugging out 11-12 win seasons baseline regardless too. It’s insane. If Nick had the knowledge he has now back then, no doubt he’d have gotten a 3peat from 2015-2017. Hell, throw 2014 in there so he knows to remind Lane Kiffin that Derrick Henry just so happens to be a 6’ 3” 250 4.4 Heisman winner. I believe you can see it reflected in Bryant Denny Stadium as well. The crowd is in the games because it actually feels like something is actually on the line every week instead of just running over teams on autopilot.

Just a thought

Wonder if crowds will be affected when every game doesn't matter next year.

Prime Saban does not let Dalcourt sniff playing time. Roberts 77 would have been out there vs Texas.

Prime Saban does not let golding piss in the watercooler for 5 years.

When he was absolutely on top the best players played, and coaches that didnt perform (like pussmeyer) got sent packing.

It's a hot take.

But if he wins it all, this may be one of his best coaching jobs.

This may be his last hoorah. But I've said that a couple of times before, so who knows.

Whenever he goes, I hope he's able to do it after a natty. That is the ultimate goat move.
