We throw the ball to our backs pretty often. The only time we really go into run it up the gut over and over mode is when the game is well in hand. If Henry can't pick up a blitz or catch he isn't going to play in a close game barring a couple of injuries. That's not even up for debate. Our backs are all expected to be complete players.

The percentage of passes to the RBs and TEs in 2012 was by far the lowest rate since Saban has been at Alabama.

Percentage of passes to RBs and TEs

2007- 34.2%
2008- 43.1%
2009- 48.6%
2010- 35.2%
2011- 40.5%
2012- 30.6%

Nussmeier loves the intermediate to deep passing game and I won't be surprised if that number goes down to around 25% this year. We only threw to our running backs a lot because of our QBs limitations and/or inexperience. Also, Jim McElwain ran a very conservative, vanilla passing game. I remember Saban saying a number of times that our passing game needed to be more explosive and dynamic. I believe we will see a much more aggressive passing attack this year and for the foreseeable future. Our young RBs don't need to be great receivers out of the backfield to get playing time. They just need to be adept blockers and protect the football.

Derrick "The Hammer" Henry would be a great name for a bareknuckle boxer.
