I was a little confused. 2x with the game out of hand, Saban elected to go for it on 4th down in Georgia territory in the 4th Q.

Did he not want to risk a turnover/blocked punt or was he basically using UGA as practice at that point? One play was a throw to OJ Howard.

Was Saban rubbing it in a bit since he has since been quoted that the pregame UGA stunt pissed him off?

Just running clock trying to get a first down. In those conditions "big plays" are all you're concerned with.

This. He does it a lot. Not trying to score, just get to the marker. A blocked punt for a score or punt return would give life to a struggling team.

I think it was in "4th down territory" was it not?

Always going to do that.

They usually elect to go for it in those situations rather than kick the field goal to extend the lead or risk some special teams disaster.

I have not seen NS try to run up a score but against AU in 2010 he learned a lesson. It aint ever over. We did go conservative in the 2nd half after going up 38-3

Another thing you have to think about is that defending punt returns can often lead to injury with everyone running at full speed and getting blocked. Add in how nasty the field was getting, and I think it's obvious why we went for it on 4th down.

Going for it on 4th in 4th quarter was easily the right call. Get a first down and you could easily run another 2-3 minutes off. You didn't need points, just keep the clock moving.

Also a punt into end zone would only net a 10 yard difference of field position. Bad weather for longer field goals.

It's a function of field position.

If you're between the 30-40 you are too close to punt and in a game where you are already well ahead no point in trying a long FG.

Kicking in the rain is risky. Roll out, fall down is safe. UGA couldn't move the ball no matter where you gave it to them.
