Rick Karle is reporting on Twitter. He was a fantastic RB whose career was cut short by an ACL injury in the 2002 Southern Miss game.

Never forget his performance with Santonio Beard in the 2001 Iron Bowl. Both have passed away. Terribly sad.

Damn, RIP Ahmad. Remember watching him run when we had a trio of backs in the tougher times.

I loved Ahmaad. He and Santonio Beard wrecked Auburn in 2001.

Former Crimson Tide football players gather at funeral of their teammate Ahmaad Galloway

They didn't want to hold a reunion there. How in the world did this group of Alabama football heroes wind up gathering in Millington, Tennessee?

Life goes by fast when you play football. One year, it's 2000 — the crowd is cheering and you are smiling. The next time you blink, it's 2023 — there is silence and you are crying.

The Alabama football heroes gathered Monday to say goodbye to yet another teammate who has died too soon. Ahmaad Galloway died 15 days ago and the Alabama heroes made the trek north to Galloway's hometown. There, they gathered before one spoke up, then another. They shared stories about the good old days. Stories that over the years have faded from their memories.

There was Kenny Smith, Terry Jones Jr. and Hirchell Bolden. There was Griff Redmill, Ray Marshall and Reggie Grimes. There was Kindal Moorehead, Tony Dixon and Gary Banes. There was AC Carter, Miguel Merrit and Dennis Alexander. There was Kecalf Bailey, Darrius Gilbert and Marvin Constant.

The Alabama football heroes told stories about Galloway, a tough running back who left them at the age of 42. They prayed for Galloway's children, Austin and Aubree, and then listened to 11-year-old Austin at the funeral as he recited a hand-written letter he wrote to honor his dad. They carried their friend to the grave.

The Alabama football heroes are scattering today, heading back to their families and their hometowns, 20 years after they breathed in the roar of the crowd. As they leave Millington, they will have time to think about their good times with another former teammate who is gone too soon.

They will think about the life and the spirit of their good friend Ahmaad Galloway.

An Alabama football hero.
