Nay'Quan Wright

Early contenders:
Alabama, Miami, Georgia, Tennessee, among others

Breakdown: Much like Richards, Wright is high on the board of several elite programs. Georgia has often been mentioned with him and Miami is also heavily in the mix. Wright has kept a low profile over the past year, but expect his recruitment to heat up this spring. He’s talked about taking visits and it will be telling if he pops up on campus in Athens or Knoxville instead of continuing to be a regular in Coral Gables.

Keilan Robinson

Early contenders:
Virginia Tech, Michigan, Nebraska, Alabama, Kentucky, Penn State

Breakdown: Robinson’s recruitment is really just starting to take off in earnest, with several new programs joining the race on a weekly basis. Among the programs to offer in the last month are Alabama, Michigan and Virginia Tech he’s spoken highly of all three. Penn State has been a factor in Robinson’s recruitment for longer, with an offer over the summer leading to an on campus visit in the fall. Expect his travel schedule to pick up this spring and summer and that should help provide some clarity into his line of thinking.

The next Saban? Prospects weigh in at Rivals 3 Stripe Camp Mobile

quote:

MOBILE, Ala – When the Rivals Camp Series presented by adidas checked into Mobile, much of the talk was about the defending national champions and the living-legend status of Alabama coach Nick Saban. But with the game’s top coach set to turn 67 this year, it’s not too soon to wonder which coach may become the dean of profession when Saban decides to hang it up.

Rivals.com polled dozens of recruits and asked them their opinions on who might become “the next Nick Saban” and take over as the sport’s most celebrated and successful coach when Saban rides off into retirement. Clemson’s Dabo Swinney and Georgia’s Kirby Smart dominated the conversation with nine and seven mentions respectively, but a number of other head coaches garnered mention. Below is a sampling of the most thoughtful responses.

“I’d say coach [Dabo] Swinney. He’s a great coach and a great guy. All the players love him and you can look at the success he’s had so far. He already has the title and he has Clemson on the radar every single year.” - Four-star quarterback Paul Tyson, grandson of late Alabama head coach Bear Bryant

“I’m going to have to say coach Swinney at Clemson. It’s his energy. That’s why he’s going to always have success getting good recruiting classes. We like that. Young players like him.” – Class of 2020 defensive back Reginald Bracey

“I would say [Scott] Frost. He’s always involved with his players and they always have a good time with him no matter which program he’s at. It was good what he was able to do at UCF. And I feel like they were really under-ranked at the end of the season. I feel like they should have been much higher.” – Louisiana-based wide receiver Tyler McNair

“I’d say Kirby Smart. Georgia seems like they’re here to stay and I like his fire and how he brought back the program.” – Three-star defensive tackle Patrick Lucas

“I would have to say and not just because I’m committed to LSU, I would say coach [Ed Orgeron] honestly. Because if he stays at LSU and keeps building things and getting good players I think they can be unstoppable. I think he’s that good.” – Rivals100 offensive lineman Kardell Thomas

“I think the new Mississippi State head coach, [Joe Moorhead]. You can just tell by how hype he is and by his attitude.” - Class of 2020 ATH Kris Draine

“Dabo Swinney. It’s just … I think he’s a young motivated coach. He’s been around a winning tradition for a while already. He seems like he’s on the verge.” – Three-star quarterback Sheldon Layman

“Clemson’s head coach, Dabo. He’s a great coach. A few years ago, Clemson was just a contender for the ACC. Now they’re a contender for it all every year.” – Three-star defensive back Collin Duncan

“Dabo Swinney. He’s just a great coach. I think he’s gonna be the next guy like Saban and I think he’s also probably the next guy up at Alabama.” - Mississippi State commit DJ James

“Man, I don’t think anyone. You can’t replace that. I’ll say nobody.” – Louisiana-based defensive back Jerrae Williams

“If I had to say, I would think coach [Gus] Malzahn. I mean, he’s not that young, but that’s who I think. He knows what he’s doing and he’s good every year. Alabama’s the only thing holding him back, and when Saban is gone …” – Three-star defensive back Jarrian Jones

“It’ll be Kirby Smart. He’s a Saban guy and his defense is great. He does so many different things. They shocked me this year, but now it looks like they’re going to be good for a long time.” – Defensive back Tyruss Gayden

“I don’t know. To me, the best coach before Nick Saban was Bear Bryant, so we could be waiting awhile for another Nick Saban. We might be waiting 40 or 50 years for another guy like that.” – 2020 defensive linemen McKinnley Jackson

“I’d say Dan Mullen. I think he’s set up there at Florida.” - Alabama-based offensive lineman Tyrique Sellers

“Ain’t gonna lie, I think it’s Kirby Smart at Georgia. I don’t really know how to explain why, but I think Georgia might be the next Alabama.” – Three-star offensive lineman Caleb Etienne

“I’d probably say Kirby Smart. He’s a great coach and understands us from a player perspective. He’s going to be a Nick Saban-type. He’s going to slide right in and become the best coach.” – Quarterback Kenneth Jefferson

“I think Dabo. He’s got a great program right now and gets a lot of recruits. He’s got a lot of time left, too.” – Three-star running back A'Montae Spivey

Elite DL McKinnley Jackson updates his recruiting status

quote:

MOBILE, Ala. — McKinnley Jackson showed up at the Rivals 3 Stripe Camp presented by adidas Sunday and dominated. He has put himself in that five-star conversation already and he is still just a sophomore.

Before putting on a show Sunday, the 6-foot-3, 317 pound defensive tackle out of George County re-opened his recruitment. He committed to LSU November 27, then de-committed February 7.

The Tigers did nothing wrong and he is actually visiting Baton Rouge again this weekend. It was hard for him to make that call to Ed Orgeron.

"Coach O treats me like family and I did not want to hurt his feelings, but I had to do what was best for me," said Jackson. "This is a business and it is a big decision, so after figuring out that I committed too early, I had to open it back up.

"Coach O still loves me, we still have a great relationship and I could still end up at LSU. I just need to re-evaluate things and go through the recruiting process not committed to a school."

Some could still consider LSU as the school to beat for this rising star. He has gotten to the staff and players on a different level from all the other schools and that is one of the reasons they are still high on his list. The other is just how they get after it.

"They treat me like family there at LSU. I relate to the players and the coaches are great guys. I feel very comfortable there, for sure.

"I also love what LSU does in the trenches and coach O knowing my position is just a bonus. They are LSU, but I call them DLU, DBU and defense U — they are great all over the field on defense and that has always stood out to me.

"I am going back this weekend and I am looking forward to it."

When LSU is going after an elite lineman like Jackson, then you can almost always bet Alabama is right there in the picture too. Before arriving in Mobile Sunday, Jackson spent Saturday in Tuscaloosa.

One of the many new coaches on Nick Saban's staff made a strong first impression on Jackson.

"Alabama is all about business and they made me feel like they really wanted me there Saturday," said Jackson. "I met with the new defensive line coach (Craig Kuligowski) and we have a lot of the same thoughts. He is a cool guy that is confident in his ability. He's had a lot of success, so I like that and we had a great time together."

With Jackson being an elite prospect in the South and Alabama and LSU being involved, most would view those as the favorites. Especially with their success rate on the defensive line, but Jackson is viewing all schools the same at this time and he plans to see many more in the coming months.

"I really can't say who is on top right now. I am very open. Of course I am looking at LSU and Alabama, but Clemson is hot on me, Texas A&M is coming hard, Tennessee is another school that wants me to visit, so I am just exploring my options. I am going to check out those schools for sure.

"I am not really thinking about favorites right now. I am going to head out to visit Stanford this summer and I may check out UCLA too. I just want to see what all is out there.

"I am starting over. I have taken a few steps back and hit the reset button. I just acted too fast."

ECU grad transfer QB expected to join Tide

quote:

As Nick Saban stated in his post-National Signing Day press conference, Alabama is likely to add a graduate transfer quarterback to its roster after not signing a signal caller out of high school in the 2018 class.

One name that’s emerged in the weeks to follow is East Carolina transfer Gardner Minshew. The Mississippi native visited Tuscaloosa for the day last Friday and currently holds an offer to join the program for the 2018-19 season and potentially beyond with a redshirt year available.

Speaking to sources with knowledge of the situation, Minshew very much enjoyed the visit to the Capstone and, for now, the plan is to join the program this summer.

While Minshew can’t practice with the team this spring, sources say he is looking forward to being around the facilities often in the next few months for meetings and to take in practices, all in an effort to acclimate himself to the team for his arrival this summer.

Auburn and Tennessee have been two others mentioned with Minshew. He hasn’t visited either to this point.

Keep in mind: there is not a letter of intent or binding agreement for Minshew to sign, so if another opportunity were to arise or another program began to show interest, Minshew would be free to explore those avenues if he decided to do that. Sources, however, say he is grateful for the opportunity that Alabama has presented, so the likelihood of that happening is slim.

Minshew was named ECU’s starter entering spring drills. The Brandon, Miss. native started five of 10 games during the 2017 season, leading East Carolina in completions (174), attempts (304), passing yards (2,140) and passing touchdowns (16) as a junior. He established ECU and AAC single-game records with a 52-of-68, 463-yard performance at Houston on Nov. 4.

After leading Northwest Mississippi Community College to the 2015 NJCAA national title, he transferred to ECU and played in seven games during the 2016 campaign as a sophomore.
