They are releasing Kaho so he can be closer to home--which is probably going to be BYU.

Makes sense if being close to home matters more than playing at the highest level. BYU wouldn't excite me as a player, but I'm not Kaho.

LINK ]The latest on Ale Kaho's Washington departure, what's next (247/Dawgman)

quote:

Washington issued a full release to true freshman linebacker Ale Kaho on Monday, again opening the recruitment for 247Sports’ top-ranked inside linebacker in the 2018 class (No. 21 overall).

Kaho, a 247Sports five-star, originally chose the Huskies over Alabama and a number of other high-profile offers. The Reno, Nev., native does not have any restrictions on his release, which means he’s free to explore a transfer anywhere.

A 6-foot-1, 218-pound linebacker, Kaho reportedly had a number of family issues that spurred the transfer in an effort to push him closer to home.

It’s unusual to see a talent of Kaho’s caliber transfer before spending a full semester on campus, and it creates an interesting case of a do-over recruitment only a few months removed from the original push to sign him. To sort everything out, 247Sports consulted with its deep stable of local and national experts to get a pulse on Kaho and Washington moving forward.

With that in mind, here’s a breakdown of what makes Kaho a standout talent, what his departure means for Washington and where Kaho could be headed next.

By the way, it’s important to keep in mind Kaho could easily arrive at a school quickly and play in 2018. With the new redshirt rule in play, a player can enroll later than ever and still make an impact late in the season. That's something to watch out for as 247Sports Regional Recruiting Analyst Blair Angulo points out later.

Note: Per Asking for NLI Release - FAQs, since Kaho didn't enroll at UW and is released from the NLI he signed in the 2017 academic year, he can sign and enroll anywhere in the 2018 academic year without having to sit out, provided he's qualified. Bama still has an unused 2018 cycle signee and initial counter spot and is under the 85 limit right now. So, Bama has scholarship room for him.

Question: What makes Kaho such a special prospect?

Brandon Huffman, National Recruiting Editor: “The versatility, athleticism and physicality he plays with. He is a unique blend at the linebacker position of athleticism in pass coverage, quickness in getting in to the backfield, physical ability in stopping the run, ability to diagnose plays and consistently being in the right spot to end them. He is adept at rushing the quarterback but also causing problems for him in coverage. Kaho played running back in high school and was a pretty physical runner with high-level athleticism. He had the highest Nike Football Rating at The Opening Bay Area in 2017, so he flashed that athleticism with strong testing numbers.”

Question: How did Kaho’s recruitment go the first time, and what’s expected from it moving forward?

Blair Angulo, 247Sports Regional Recruiting Analyst: "Ale's recruitment was one of the more interesting ones to cover in the 2018 cycle, and it began quite early with a commitment to BYU in the summer of 2016. Kaho began to land some national offers and he took an official visit to Alabama during the season. But it was Washington that managed to complete the flip just before the Early Signing Period. His relationship with the Washington staff as well as Washington’s proximity to home were major factors in the process. But now that he's gotten his full release, I'd expect a lot of the same suitors to emerge as contenders — Alabama, BYU, Oregon and USC. A source has told 247Sports that the family would hope it's not too late for Kaho to get a chance to play this season, so if that's the case, they could decide on the next stop rather quickly."

Question: Will Alabama pursue Kaho again?

Hank South, BamaOnLine Recruiting Reporter: “After offering Ale Kaho at their prospect camp in July of 2017, the former 247Sports five-star vaulted atop the recruiting board at a major position of need. Things appeared trending in the right direction throughout the fall in terms of the Tide’s chances before the former BYU pledge flipped his verbal to Washington and signed with the Huskies in the Early Signing Period. Considering the Tide have little depth at the inside linebacker position, one would have to imagine that Alabama will show renewed interest in the former U.S. Army All-American after finishing second in his recruitment in the first go-round.”

Question: What does Kaho’s departure mean for Washington moving forward?

Chris Fetters, Dawgman.com Editor: “The quick answer is that it opens up a scholarship. The longer answer is that we don’t really know how Washington was going to try and use him because the coaches, including Chris Petersen, talked about his versatility and the ability to play inside or outside. I think they were interested in starting him outside first to see how he would go, and then work from there. But there’s seven outside linebackers right now playing for four spots in the two-deeps, and he would have had his work cut out for him to play right away after joining the team late. The Huskies already have 2019 commitments in Miki Ah You and Alphonzo Tuputala, and some crystal balls have come in for Daniel Heimuli, so they are doing okay on that front.

“The tougher question to answer is just how much of a PR hit recruiting-wise will UW take from this, considering Kaho was the first ever five-star signee for Chris Petersen. Right now the feeling up here is that the aggressive schools will continue to back-channel the Huskies to death because they know if they get in the ear of the right guy, they can flip them, or even try and get them out of their release. USC flipped Marlon Tuipulotu late after he had been committed to UW for months and now Kaho. UW fans are feeling burned, and rightly so, in my opinion. Petersen had to outright release him, you can’t play politics with a kid who doesn’t want to be there and does have legitimate family issues.”

What sense does it make for him to leave Washington to be closer to home, if he is just going to transfer to a school farther away? At first, the articles made it sound like he was just trying to go home because of how he was taking the family tragedy. Now, they have taken the tone that he just wants to get out of Washington.
IMO the kid needs to go home and figure himself out. He needs to do what is better for him personally and worry about playing later, after he has that sorted out.

From what I have gathered, Kaho was more comfortable with Alabama coaches but Washington was closer to home. That’s why he ultimately chose them. But he figured out quickly Seattle wasn’t for him.

I thought he would be able to play this year since he never enrolled. I don't know the rules though, that's just something I read

He can. I've corrected my posts above. I missed a key thing in the Asking for NLI Release - FAQs that I read this morning and thought he'd still need a waiver to avoid sitting out a year. But since he's released from an NLI he signed in the 2017 academic year and didn't enroll at UW, he can sign and enroll in the 2018 academic year without having to sit out.

I doubt we get a waiver. We usually don't have tha kind of luck.

If he could get a waiver, it would be nice to have him at the end of the season for 4 games

See my corrected posts above. Kaho won't need a waiver after all. He's a high 4* ILB and we need a couple more stud ILBs besides Shane Lee. So, it makes sense to get him if we can, even if he redshirts this season.

Yup, we gotta try to get him. I'd like to have him for the last 4 games, but if he has to sit out, that's fine too. We need him

It sounds like he lost a lot of weight too, so Cochran will need to put him on the Rama Jama's for breakfast/fast food in the Ferg for lunch/Phil's for dinner/beer for dessert/Quick Grill after dessert diet plan. He will gain all that weight in a matter of weeks. I can attest to this from experience.

This was posted on BOL by some Mod, not sure who the guy was:
quote:

I'm still hearing that Alabama is the front-runner to land former five-star linebacker Brandon "Ale" Kaho

quote:

This could move very quickly... The thought is the Kaho family would prefer for Brandon to pick his next destination soon so he can get back into his routine and possibly see the field this season

He has been in Communication with Bama since being released from his NLI

Blair Angulo = 247 recruiting analyst, mountain region. From another BOL thread:
quote:

"Hank what are your thoughts? Does he end up at Bama or some other school closer to home?"

Hank: "I think it's too soon to tell tbh. Bama was a strong second place finisher for him."

ETA: Blair Angulo CBd Ale Kaho to Bama at about 2 pm today. If Bama adds Ale Kaho to its 2018 class, it'll move up from #6 to #5 in the team recruiting rankings. (#ROLL1N8?)
