I just asked about Mwikuta (hoping he could be an ILB) and was given the answer: "Jack/DE".

I'd be okay with him as a DE, as you really can't have too many on the DL.

But with what we already have and are going to sign (Harris, plus either Thib or Diabate) at OLB, and Smalls likely for 2020, goodness knows we don't need him at OLB.

I doubt Mwikuta 'grows" into an SDE type DL. I think he'll remain the hybrid LB/DE type.

We're in on some 2020 LB studs.

Georgia is having their big recruiting weekend next week as well.

They are supposed to unveil some new football related facility during that time and the consensus on their board is they may land a handful of guys during it.

I guess we should be on the lookout for where Nakobe Dean decides to go.

Did anyone else catch Saban’s comment about cross training Christian Miller at ILB? Interesting. Shows how thin we are there. Dean would be foolish not to come to Bama given the opportunity.

Does alfano have a solid chance at being a 5 star, he gets nothing but rave reviews and I'm stoked about him coming.

The top 32 players in the 247 Composite get five stars (the NFL has 32 first rounders). Alfano is ranked at 55 now. He has a decent chance of getting there by Feb.

Take Two: Who lands five-star Darnell Wright?

quote:

THE STORYLINE

Darnell Wright is the second-best prospect in the 2019 class and the top uncommitted recruit since recent LSU pledge Derek Stingley, Jr., took over the top spot in the rankings.

The Huntington, W. Va., five-star standout has kept his recruitment relatively quiet and is certainly taking his time, showing no indication that he’s anywhere near making his commitment.

Wright is tied for the highest spot in the offensive tackle rankings since 2013 when D.J. Humphries was also second behind only wide receiver Dorial Green-Beckham, so Wright is definitely a top-level prospect with tremendous potential.

As for his recruitment, it seems to be an early SEC battle between Tennessee and Alabama, but others could creep into the picture as well with Ohio State making a run earlier on.

Can the Vols hold off the powerful Crimson Tide through his senior season or will coach Nick Saban and college football’s most powerful program flex their muscle to get the talented West Virginia star?

FIRST TAKE: ADAM FRIEDMAN, RIVALS MID-ATLANTIC ANALYST

“Wright is really taking his time with his recruitment. Tennessee and Alabama continue to be the main contenders, but Clemson and Georgia could be getting visits prior to the beginning of the season. Wright has visited Tennessee, Alabama, and North Carolina so far this offseason and he gave positive reviews after each trip. It would be a surprising twist to hear that Ohio State was possibly gaining traction with Wright. His interest level in the Buckeyes dropped off early in his recruitment and as recently as last month said he had very little contact with the Buckeyes.”

So he didn't predict anyone to land Wright.

SECOND TAKE: MIKE FARRELL, RIVALS RECRUITING DIRECTOR

“Teams have beaten Alabama recently for recruits, so Tennessee has an advantage for being the early favorite for him. He has people around him who like Tennessee and it’s a little bit closer to home, so there are some advantages for Tennessee. It’s hard to beat Alabama for anybody you want, but Tennessee has a really good shot here.

“Ohio State could get involved with anybody, but I don’t think West Virginia will have a chance to keep him home. With Urban Meyer, Ohio State can pull anything out, but right now it looks like Tennessee and Alabama are definitely the two favorites.”

And neither did this fricking clown.

What's the point of the article if they aren't going to say WHO lands Wright?

Alfano is one of those guys I could care less about his rating. You just know he is going to be able to contribute early.

Not really. Biggest thing I took from it is George Pickens is telling both Alabama and Auburn sites he will be in town this weekend.

ETA: Meaning he is telling the Alabama sites like BOL he will be in Tuscaloosa and telling the Auburn sites he will be in Auburn.

This is from June 25th, but I missed it so I'll post it now:

Camp appearance leads to an Alabama offer for DT Cavon Butler

quote:

Toledo Whitmer three-star defensive tackle Cavon Butler is one of the top linemen in the Midwest for the class of 2019, and the Ohio native has been pulling in offers with regularity.

Butler, 6-foot-2 and 285-pounds, is closing in on ten offers, including Cincinnati, Pittsburgh and West Virginia. This past weekend, Butler traveled to Alabama to work out for the Crimson Tide staff.

Performing along with 2020 quarterback teammate Riley Keller, Butler impressed well enough to land an offer from Aabama head coach Nick Saban following the camp. He was understandably excited by his ninth offer.

"It was really unexpected to get that offer from Alabama, but I was confident in my abilities," Butler stated. "I spoke with (Alabama assistant coach) Dan Enos before the camp, and he told me thought I would do well."

"The camp was great and I was in the first session with some very good players, and I thought I did really well," he added. "I thought I did best in the individual drills, and especially in the one-on-one's. The competition was very good, and I knew I had to be very good or get embarrassed. The Alabama coaches were great to me, and I asked a lot of questions throughout the camp."

"I always want to know how the coach saw me do a certain drill, and if I did something wrong then I want to know about it," he continued. "I always want the coaches to know I can take coaching, and want to be better."

Meeting with Alabama head coach Nick Saban in his office was quite a thrill for Butler in itself, but that meeting was made even better when he landed an offer from Saban.

"Sitting with Coach Saban was amazing and I was grateful that he took the time to meet with me," Butler admitted. "He pretty much got right to the point, and told me that he was offering me a scholarship. I was there with my coach from high school, and we both just kind of looked at each other."

"I was not expecting him to offer, and I really don't know what I was expecting, to be honest," he said. "When he told me that he was offering, I felt like laughing because I was so happy, but Coach Saban is a serious guy so I stayed serious."

"I was really kind of speechless and it was surreal," he noted.

So where does Alabama stand with Butler when compared to the other schools that have offered? Could a decision be coming soon for the defensive lineman? He had originally planned to commit in late June or early July.

"I definitely thought about taking it on the spot," Butler said. "Alabama is way up there for me for sure, because they're the first big school to take a chance on me."

"I actually just had a long talk today with my grandfather about recruiting," he stressed. "We decided to push the date back to after my first game in August."

"I don't really have a favorite list right now, and I do have an unofficial visit coming to West Virginia on July 27," he concluded.

Butler is currently ranked as the No. 56 defensive tackle in the country according to the industry-generated 247Sports Composite.

Like TS said, nothing new really, except this...

July 27th Champions Cookout attendees:
quote:

Still working on confirming everybody so we have an accurate list. It’s going to be a super competitive weekend in terms of schools battling for visits... Darnell Wright, Trey Sanders, George Pickens, Byron Young, Jermaine Burton and Shane Lee have said they are coming (I would expect most of the commits). Akeem Dent may make it in as well as Siaki Ika. I’ll have a bigger list next week as guys finalize their plans.

Alabama QB target Cornelious Brown may re-classify to 2020

quote:

Calera senior quarterback Cornelious Brown earned an Alabama offer last month, but Nick Saban already has commitments from Thompson's Taulia Tagovailoa and Hewitt-Trussville's Paul Tyson.

Alabama isn't taking three quarterbacks in the Class of 2019 and with Tagovailoa recently re-affirming his commitment to Alabama after a visit to Tennessee, it cast even more doubt on any possibility of Brown signing with Alabama.

But Brown, a strong-armed 6-foot-5 senior, may have found an elegant solution: Enroll in prep school for a year and re-classify to the Class of 2020.

"It'd be a fresh start for me since my 11th grade season was my truly first (high school) season," he said. "There are so many quarterback slots available in 2020, not just in the SEC, but the Power 5 in general."

And what would be the benefits of postponing his college enrollment for a year?

"I do believe I'd receive better offers," Brown said. "It's also another year to get bigger and stronger and work to put another 10 pounds on my 185-pound, 6-foot-5 1/2 frame. It's just another year to get better, another year to get bigger and stronger, and it'll open more doors for me because there aren't too many slots open for the Class of 2019, especially at the Power 5 schools, and that's where I believe I'm talented enough to play and that's where the pros come from. That's why it's something I definitely want to look into."

Brown emphasized re-classifying to 2020 is only a possibility, as he also holds offers from Vanderbilt, Rutgers, UAB and others. He's also received attention, but no offers yet, from Tennessee, Ohio State, Michigan and South Carolina since Alabama extended its offer a month ago.

Brown said there's also the possibility he could walk on and pay his own way-- whether at Alabama or another Power 5 school -- and try to earn a scholarship after a year. He said he's essentially eliminated the idea of going to junior college for a year and would prefer to head to prep school as way avoid burning a season of NCAA eligibility.

Alabama, Auburn and virtually all of the Power 5 begin evaluating and extending scholarship offers to quarterbacks as early as their sophomore seasons. Brown attended three different high schools and didn't really earn a recruiting profile until last year when he completed 157-of-281 passes for 2,334 yards and 25 touchdowns at Calera. He added 344 yards and two touchdowns in the spring game against Chilton County.

The Alabama offer clearly raised his recruiting profile, but the Crimson Tide's situation also complicated matters. Alabama also already has a quarterback commitment for the Class of 2020, Carson Beck, a 3-star prospect from Jacksonville, Florida.

Auburn has shown little interest in Brown, perhaps because Bo Nix is committed in the Class of 2019. Auburn also has already extended an offer to Hoover's Robby Ashford, a four-star prospect who is considered the state's top quarterback prospect in the Class of 2020.

"I feel like it's going to open some doors for me," he said of the Alabama offer. "Some things change during the season. I think Tennessee is the only SEC school without a quarterback commitment in the 2019 season. Things can definitely shake up during the season. ... I'll see how it goes from here."
