Megathread post 6700
I've been monitoring his UT visit. Vols team-site articles quote his mom saying she liked K'ville, the friendly people and that it's close to home, but that it'll be Darnell's decision. But many Vols fans have convinced themselves Wright is now a UT lock and maybe even a silent commit.

Heard that utk just made their move on Darnell Wright. Tightened things up a bit. Still feel good about him coming to Bama with a visit to the Champions Cookout coming up.

LINK ]Top100 Georgia commit giving Alabama a chance (BamaOnLine-VIP)
4* ILB Trezmen Marshall 6-1/236 (GA) hudl
“Right now I don’t feel like I’m going to decommit, but you’ve got until that early enroll date, and if we build that friendship and it feels more like home there than Georgia, I don’t care who’s mad or what, I have to do what’s best for me and go to that school.” Marshall's OV plans: UT June 7, UA for the Iron Bowl, AU, FSU and UGA. Marshall has visited UA "about four times" and UGA "about 30 times" so it'll oviously take some more UA visits for Bama to feel more like home than UGA.
Trezman Marshall breaks his silence, he's a Georgia Bulldog (Rivals, April 27)

They are OK with me taking visits. They tell me that this is my life and that I should live it how I want to. They want me to enjoy recruiting, so I will, but I am committed to Georgia."

So maybe there's a way to make it work for Ealy with some combination of a partial BB scholly and other financial aid for the fall semester of 2019 and then put him on a FB scholly.
Unless something has changed if we recruit him in official manner and he comes to UA on a baseball scholly or other sport he will be a counter for football. If we do not recruit him he will count once he suits up for practice

That's not correct and the pertinent rules don't appear to have changed since 2011. You recently posted that same incorrect remark about suiting up for practice in response to one of my posts on this matter. I responded then with the following, but apprently you didn't see it. So here it is again:
WHETHER and WHEN they become counters in football varies depending on several factors:
(1) whether/how they're recruited,
(2) type of financial aid offered and received,
(3) multiple sports or not, and
(4) whether or not they compete.
I have provided more info below, including the NCAA's definition of recruited student-athlete.
The term compete means play in a game.
Multi-sport Student-Athletes and Financial Aid Limits ... - College Sports Live (PDF)
quote:
A counter who was recruited and/or offered financial aid to participate in football and who participates (practices or competes) in football and one or more sports (including basketball) shall be counted in the sport of football.
A counter who was not recruited and/or offered financial aid to participate in football and who competes in football and one or more sports (including basketball) shall be counted in the sport of football.
NCAA Bylaws (PDF)
quote:
15.02.8 Recruited Student-Athlete. For purposes of Bylaw 15, a recruited student-athlete is a student-athlete who, as a prospective student-athlete: (Adopted: 1/15/11 effective 8/1/11)
(a) Was provided an official visit to the institution’s campus;
(b) Had an arranged, in-person, off-campus encounter with a member of the institution’s coaching staff (including a coach’s arranged, in-person, off-campus encounter with the prospective student-athlete or the prospective student-athlete’s parents, relatives or legal guardians); or
(c) Was issued a National Letter of Intent or a written offer of athletically related financial aid by the institution for a regular academic term.
15.5.6.3.7 Recruited Student-Athlete, Varsity Competition. [FBS/FCS] In accordance with Bylaw 15.5.1.2, a recruited student-athlete (per Bylaw 15.02.8) receiving institutional financial aid certified as having been granted without regard in any degree to athletics ability becomes an initial counter in the first academic year in which the student-athlete competes on the varsity level. (See Bylaw 15.5.1.2.1.) (Revised: 10/27/05 effective 8/1/06, 1/15/11 effective 8/1/11)
So, according to the above NCAA Bylaws info:
(1) A football team member on a non-athletic scholarship does not become a counter until he competes in a football game.
(2) Jerrion Ealy (great in baseball and football) could be on a baseball scholarship, be a counter in baseball and practice with the football team, as long as Bama avoids those three actions that would make him a recruited student-athlete for football. But, if/when he competes in a FB game he'd then become a counter in FB instead of BB.

You're saying no one on the coaching staff has ever visited Ealy?

I didn't say that. I don't know for sure that they haven't. But I've followed Saban's recruiting well enough to know that if they've considered doing what I suggested then they're esuring that they avoid those three things that would screw it up. They certainly managed that fine with Bullovas and Brannon so that they could blueshirt them.
Coaches can go watch them practice and play and can go to their school to talk to their HS coaches and faculty, etc. If they cross paths with the recruit when doing so, they can briefly greet them but can't have a significant conversation.
They simply can't meet face-to-face with the recruit or his family at their home or some other off campus location to recruit them. I've done some searching and cannot find anything stating that a UA coach has met with Ealy or his family other than on UA's campus.

ok surge, he counts against the football when he actually plays in a game, got that. but what about the other way around, ie keith holcombe. hes on a football scholy but does he count against the baseball limits when he plays baseball?
if not, then this rule is in place to punish football, correct? the old bear bryant rule

Two sauces told Hank that UA is Carter's #1 now. Carter is rated the nation's #11 CB per the 247 Composite, but 247Sports rates him #5 and one of the top BOL insiders said he's definitely top-5. He's coming to the Champions Cookout June 22.

Mulitsport student-athletes only count against the limits in one sport. Punish doesn't seem like the right word, imo. Those rules to count them in football or basketball instead of the other sports were crafted to close the old loopholes football and basketball were using. Players were being given scholarships in other sports to get around the football and basketball scholarship limits.

Yep. That's a must-have trait in Saban's book. Gotta lay the wood.
Carter is one of the recruits Saban called while he was at the NFL draft.

He's top 5 on the 247 rankings at the position. Will be interesting to see how it plays out with us making a pretty big move with Dent, in a pretty good position for Hill, and in on a ton of other really good DBs. We can afford to be extremely picky, and probably will since spots will be very tight. I'm beginning to think (haven't heard this... just a deduction) that Turnage might wind up not having a spot in December.

After I read your comment, I watched his film and you're right. I'm glad because it seems like the main problem we can't coach out of guys, is being "soft". Once players get labeled as that, we never see them very much.

Thanks. I edited to include 247's #5 rating.
If Hill and Carter committed, with Devonta Lee highly likely too, maybe Turnage will get cold feet and flip somewhere. But Turnage is pretty dang good and a versatile player. So maybe he'd stay in the class but maybe more as a WR. We'll see.

Jeffery Carter might get a 5th star after the Opening Finals. A write up after his last camp:
"Jeffery Carter, CB Aledo (TX) High School – If you’re looking for a guy to buy stock on, Carter is a good option. He’s got some five-star traits with a 4.3 40 yard dash, a 10.5 100 meter dash, good size at cornerback and outstanding film. Oregon is the current Crystal Ball favorite and he’s now ranked inside the national Top 50."
Hank has him on "commit watch" when he visits for the Champions Cookout on June 22.

It's logjam city this year. Maybe more so than even any of the other previous classes. Our staff is going to be in the very fortunate (and almost embarrassingly good) position to have to make some tough decisions on who to take, drop, etc. Sick, sick class.

We heard this last year too and they fricked it all up.
