Southeast Spotlight: Biggest questions before new rankings release
quote:
The Rivals Analyst Team starts the process of updating the Rivals rankings of the 2019 and 2020 classes this week following a busy spring evaluation period that included, among other events, 13 Rivals 3 Stripe Camp Series presented by adidas events. Today we look at some of the biggest questions to answer in the Southeast going into those meetings.

How many five stars are in Alabama?
Clay Webb is currently the only prospect in Alabama with a fifth star on his Rivals profile. That was not hard. The No. 1 center in America who is being pursued by Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, LSU, Tennessee and others was a very easy call months ago.
There question is: should there be more?
What about Auburn quarterback commit Bo Nix, the No. 2 prospect in the state? Some thought Pierce Quick, an offensive tackle committed to Alabama would be one already. Speaking of offensive tackles, Amari Kight was about as impressive as any at his position on the Rivals 3 stripe Camp presented by adidas circuit this spring. He is also committed to the Crimson Tide.
Scroll down to No. 7 in the state of Alabama 2019 rankings and you will see George Pickens, another prospect that has joined the five-star discussion. After seeing him a few times this spring, he has played like a five-star. He definitely won’t be ranked No. 7 in his state any longer, but how high should he, or will he go this update? The Auburn commit has shown he is one of the best in the country at his position.
Quick is coming back from an injury, so he did not get to compete this spring, but the others around him did — and all did at a high level. There will be a lot of discussions, not only this rankings update about Alabama prospects, but moving forward once we get into the 2018 season too. It is a very strong cycle in Alabama and it looks to only be getting strong.

Who’s the No. 1 DL in Mississippi?
Entering this rankings update, between the No. 3 and No. 8 prospects in Mississippi, you have four defensive linemen ranked as four-stars and all play defensive end. It is like musical chairs as you see them. Charles Moore, a Mississippi State commit who visited Auburn over the weekend, is coming back from an injury where he missed his junior season, so he is not a real factor at this time.
Nathan Pickering, Jaren Handy and Byron Young are three who all bring something different to the table and they are ahead of each other in different areas. Pickering could play strongside end, slide inside to tackle or even be a top offensive tackle on the next level. Young is solid in many areas. He is likely a five-technique on the next level, but he is another who could be moved around. He is strong and consistent. Handy is a wildcard. He loves basketball, but football is his passion, and although he is raw in a lot of areas, he looks to have a very high ceiling. Each of these three are being pursued by national powers and Handy was at one time committed to LSU.
Moore will likely jump back into this discussion a little more once the season starts and guys like Mississippi State commit De’Monte Russell and former Ole Miss commit Jamond Gordon could as well.
This cycle in Mississippi is about as good as it gets and it will likely be a battle for the best defensive lineman in the state up until the final rankings early in 2019.

Is Andrew Booth missing a star?
Andrew Booth does not get out much. He is not one that participates in a lot of camps, he does not play on the 7-on-7 circuit and he just stays at Archer, works with his team and perfects his craft. There is nothing wrong with any of that. It just means we don’t get to see him much like we do many other top cornerbacks go against the elite wide receivers to see who separates themselves as the best.
Booth has been a Rivals100 guys from the beginning, but is he ranked high enough? Booth has the size, he is strong in man coverage, he is a solid tackler and he is a natural athlete, so is he a high five-star cornerback?
We sit at 17 five-stars right now as we get set to release the post-spring 2019 rankings update, so we know there will be more five-stars. Booth is already No. 30 in the Rivals100, so he is right in that range of where five-star prospects are ranked each cycle. He checked most, if not all the boxes, but he just is not out there quite as much and many of the others are.
Auburn, Clemson, Georgia, Tennessee and many others are going all in for Booth and it is easy to see why, so when all is said and done, will the school he signs with be getting a five-star or a very highly rated four-star? That decision will have to be made.

Alabama needs to consider offering massive in-state defensive tackle for 2019
quote:
He may be focused on other recruits at the moment, but it wouldn’t hurt Alabama head coach Nick Saban to at least consider offering a student-athlete from the Montgomery area for 2019.
As we enter the heart of the summer, senior defensive lineman Patrick Lucas, Jr anticipates leaving a marquee impact at Wetumpka High School in the fall. The 6-foot-3, 280-pounder possesses a lot of versatility in the way he plays on the interior, at defensive end, and at outside linebacker. Before he decided to transfer to Wetumpka, Lucas was a wrecking ball in three seasons at Prattville High School. His quick feet, strong hands and overall physicality has already landed him offers from nine of the 14 Southeastern Conference institutions.
Both Mississippi schools – Ole Miss and Mississippi State – Florida, Tennessee and Vanderbilt all have Lucas on their board as a priority. He’s also received offers Auburn, Kentucky, Missouri and Texas A&M. During this year’s Troy Spring Game Classic at Troy University, Lucas dominated the line scrimmage – stuffing run plays and creating pressure to quarterbacks.
In talking with Lucas on May 19, he told yours truly that “he grew up an Alabama fan.”
“It would be a lot to get an offer from Coach Saban,” Lucas said.
For one who has not tipped his hand, Lucas continues to look over his options. His credits God for his durability and performance on the field, and said “it does not matter where coaches choose to play him.”
With it losing Raekwon Davis, Isaiah Buggs and Johnny Dwight after the 2018 season, it will be interesting to see as to whether the Tide extends Lucas an offer. Despite being regarded as a three-star by multiple recruiting sites, he has five-star potential and a strong work ethic.
Wetumpka, a 6A school, made it to the playoffs last year.
While it fell 31-10 to Pinson Valley in the state championship game, Lucas and the Indians are poised to return and finish business. A strong senior campaign might be what’s needed to captivate Saban and his staff’s attention in Tuscaloosa.

Vernon Broughton Talks Alabama Offer
quote:
2020 prospect, Vernon Broughton, had a great camp and now holds an offer from Alabama.
Broughton found out about his offer from the head honcho himself.
“They called me to Nick Saban’s office and we talked from there,” Broughton said. “The offer made me felt both overwhelmed and excited.”
The Houston-native plays both tight end and defensive end on his high school team. The Tide like him at defensive end. He holds offers from Baylor, Georgia, Grambling and most recently, Oklahoma.
At 6-feet-6-inches and 221 pounds, this guy is a scrappy rusher. He fights inside the trenches to make his presence felt. His size gives him a huge advantage.

Kamaar Bell Visits Tuscaloosa
quote:
Alabama has been the favorite for 2019 offensive tackle, Kamaar Bell, for quite some time now.
The Tide was the first team to offer him and several teams followed suit. Bell’s last visit to Tuscaloosa was on Monday. He got the chance to work out with several of the Tide’s coaches.
“The camp was good,” Bell said. “I got a chance to do drills and work with some of the coaches.”
Nick Saban and Brent Key got a chance to talk the Georgia-native about his offer.
“They were telling me that I already had an offer and an opportunity to come there,” Bell added. “They want me there.”
Bell really likes Alabama and is possibly looking at making a decision very soon.
“I will probably make my announcement next month,” Bell said.
A teammate of Bell, Jay Ward, received an offer from Alabama on Monday and Bell will try to put on his recruiting hat to get him to come to Tuscaloosa as well.
“We were already talking about that,” Bell said.
The Georgia-native expressed that he is taking interest in Florida, Ole Miss and Miami. He is in the process of setting up an official visit with the Tide and it could come after he makes his commitment to Alabama.
Bell could come in and make Alabama’s 2019 offensive line class that much stronger. Touchdown Alabama Magazine will keep you updated on his recruitment.

Jacoby Pinckney Enjoyed His Alabama Visit
quote:
Jacoby Pinckney took his first visit to Tuscaloosa last weekend after receiving an offer on last month. The Crimson Tide did not disappoint.
Pinckney visited several facilities on campus throughout his visit.
“Their facilities are top of the line,” Pinckney said.
The South Carolina-native is a 3-Star recruit and is one of the top players in the state of South Carolina.
Pinckney really enjoyed his time in Tuscaloosa, especially the conversation he had with Saban.
“Our conversation went good,” Pickney added. “It was very productive. It meant a lot to even talk to him. He is the pinnacle of college football coaching.”
The native will drop his top schools soon, which should include the Tide. That will be some huge news for the Tide as Pickney has a plan for every school on his list.
“I will be taking official visits to all the schools on my top school list,” Pinckney said.
The Tide wants to add a couple of wide receivers to their 2019 recruiting class and Pinckney could be a nice addition. Touchdown Alabama Magazine will keep you updated on his recruitment and everything Alabama football.

Rakim Jarett Was Very Impressed With Alabama
quote:
Rakim Jarett visited Tuscaloosa on Saturday and officially received an offer from Alabama. The visit and the offer were more than Jarrett expected.
Jarret talked with yours truly about his recent offer and visit to T-Town.
“It was great,” Jarret said. “It definitely exceeded my expectations. The offer was huge. It shows me that I’m the caliber of player they’re looking for.”
Jarett is a 4-star wide receiver out of Washington D.C. He holds more than twenty offers, but the Tide have managed to separate themselves from the competition.
“They’re near the top and probably one of my top schools,” Jarrett added.
The Washington-native had the opportunity to sit down with Nick Saban and get the ultimate compliment.
“It was definitely a shocking experience speaking directly to him,” Jarrett said. “It was really nice of him to say I reminded him of Amari Cooper, but tougher.”
Alabama left a huge impact on Jarrett as he already has another visit set for the Iron Bowl.
The Crimson Tide currently have one commit from a wide receiver in the 2020 recruiting class and would love to add Jarett. They are most definitely in play for this elite talent. Touchdown Alabama Magazine will keep you updated on his recruitment.

If Bama gets Sanders back, do they take 2 RB in this class?
Will lose D Harris, Clark and possibility Jacobs after this year. That would leave only 3 scholarship RB on the roster, 4 with the addition of Sanders. Seems like thin numbers to me for RB.

Probably will depend on a combination of what they see out of Ford when practice starts along with available options in addition to Sanders.

Oklahoma might be screwed, Kyler Murray was just selected 9th overall in the MLB draft. Couldn't happen to a better bunch of a-holes.![]()
Kyler Murray might still be OU's QB for the 2018 FB season and then leave for pro BB, according to these articles:
Riley issues statement on Murray’s future following MLB Draft (247Sports)
It's not safe to assume Kyler Murray will be OU's starting QB (247Sports)

Yeah. It probably also depends on whether or not Josh Jacobs stays or enters the draft after this season.
Also, I think Bama might try to flip/take Jerrion Ealy (RB) and put him on baseball scholly. He says he wants to play both sports in college, but he might get a pro basesball draft selection that's too good for him to pass up.
On a baseball scholly, he could practice with the football team and as long as he doesn't play in FB games during 2019 he'd be a counter in baseball. When he starts playing in FB games in 2020 he'd then become an initial counter (and total counter) in FB instead of baseball.
That would enable UA to sign another FB player in the 2019 cycle and also avoid Ealy signing a FB NLI and UA wasting a 2019 FB initial counter spot on him if he gets a pro basesball draft selection that's too good for him to pass up.
Ealy not playing in FB games in 2019 seems to be the only downside to that strategy -- if that really is one.

Baseball rarely gives full scholarships, not sure it will work offering a partial baseball scholarship.

quote:

I didn't know that.
ETA: I googled and found this posted on BOL:
quote:
...only 11.7 athletic scholarships for baseball (and a 35 man roster), baseball players can be on any type of additional financial aid without penalty... lottery scholarships, need based or diversity type financial aid, academic scholarship, waiving out of state tuition, etc...
So maybe there's a way to make it work for Ealy with some combination of a partial BB scholly and other financial aid for the fall semester of 2019 and then put him on a FB scholly. Or if there's room under the FB 85 total counters limit, he could be a blueshirt for 2019 on a FB scholly, play baseball and practice FB, but not play in FB games until 2020. In order to blueshirt, he can't be a "recruited student-athlete" for FB; i.e., no arranged off campus meetings with UA staff, no OV and no signed FB NLI.

Heard that utk just made their move on Darnell Wright. Tightened things up a bit. Still feel good about him coming to Bama with a visit to the Champions Cookout coming up.
