Don't know about Holcolmbe, but Cowan is looking doubtful for this year. A tremendous talent (1st round potential... he's a beast), but a real knucklehead. Have heard that some believe it's even questionable that he EVER gets it together... at least while in T-town.

Coach Bryant
A-“I’ll never give up on a player regardless of his ability as long as he never gives up on himself. In time he will develop.”
B-“We can’t have two standards, one set for the dedicated young men who want to do something ambitious and one set for those who don’t.”

That’s really extremely impressive for a kid that plays QB and baseball too.
Can’t hurt with Webb that they can talk shop.

My child doesn’t have this problem. But she’ll be drafty next winter because I’m not upgrading windows anytime soon (I told her to put a blanket over the window but she said only people growing pot do that). Perhaps two birds one stone.

"Upperclassmen" is a pretty strong clue, tho.
Just what I've heard through the grapevine, and yes, I think what I said was sufficient based upon the responses. As for me, I think that'd be a decent loss: key special teams player, was a situational starter last year even before injuries, and a top backup. But, we can't possibly have the same injury luck as last year, right?

Dangerously thin at ILB -- with Davis, Cowan and Benton not taking full advantage of their great opportunities.

With Bama already having room for the incoming class. Really no point in not having Holcombe come back. He can contribute on ST and play in blowouts to rest the starters.

Are we sure it's Bama Not wanting him to return or is it Keith that doesn't really want to return?

I'm not in the coaching rooms, but I'd be shocked if Bama didn't want him back. We are not going to have any issues with 85, he contributes on the field some (mainly special teams) and seems like a great team first/leadership guy (see e.g., him tackling Brown in Natty on sidelines to keep that situation from escalating).

Iirc, Saban has said he wants Holcombe to stay on the FB team.
Idk if it's definite, but some say they've heard Cowan may be ineligible for 2018 and Benton may be suspended the first 4-6 games.

2018 Roster now at 85 scholarship players:
After 2018 NSD, the projected 2018 fall roster was at 85 scholarship players. The departure of Warmack and Kennedy and addition of Musika and Hatcher put UA's 2018 roster back at 85 scholarship players.
Where Bama's recruiting numbers now stand:
After 2018 NSD, we had 22 Initial Counters (incl. 1 greyshirt Parks and 2 blueshirts Bullovas and Brannon) in the 2018 recruiting cycle, leaving 3 unused 2018 IC spots. But Musika and Hatcher use 2 of those. The one remaining unused 2018 IC spot can be used to backcount a 2019 early enrollee into, and we'll have 2019's 25 IC spots. So, we can now sign only 26 in the 2019 cycle. Any 2019 cycle blueshirts or greyshirts would count against 2020's 25 IC spots.
There may be creative ways to take a 1-2 more players in the 2019 cycle. I'm not 100% certain about the NCAA rules, but it's my understanding that a football player who's on any non-football scholarship (e.g., endowment, another sport, academic, etc.) does count against the 25/85 limits if they play in games.
If that's correct, it may be possible for Hatcher to be on a non-football scholarship initially, in order to sign another player. But there'd have to be room under the 25/85 limits to be able to play Hatcher if the need arose. Since all the 2019 IC spots would be used, he couldn't play until 2020. So, that's probably not a viable option for him. But it might be viable for Jerrion Ealy via a baseball scholarship if Bama lands him and he's willing to not play in FB games until 2020.
Another potential way to take and sign another 2019 recruit might be if Paul Tyson's family pays his way, whereby he'd be a walk-on. But I've heard nothing more than speculation about that.
Again, I'm not 100% certain of the NCAA rules in these areas, and I haven't seen any indications that Hatcher or Tyson won't be given football scholarships.

Bama3714 has mentioned a couple of times this spring that he's heard there are eligibility issues with Cowan and Benton. He said UA's appealing. What I posted above is what I saw posted on the BOL board this morning. I haven't seen any more details, despite posters asking for them.
ETA: I expected Christopher Allen to practice at ILB this spring, but as far as I know he didn't.

Damn. What a year to sign one 3* ILB.
Did Peterson make it to Tennessee, or was he ineligible ? Peterson/Walker either one would have played this year under these circumstances.
Would be a big recruiting win to get Moody playing at a higher level than either of those guys, and put him into the draft ahead of either. Long shot, but sure would be poetic justice.

He hasn't gotten his final grades and ACT retake score yet. His HS coach is cautiously optimistic.
Mack and Moses are great. But beyond them our ILB situation could be a serious depth concern for this season if either one is injured and can't play. Depth: Holcombe(?), McMillon, Cowan(?), Benton(?), Davis and Moody.
Holcombe's performance vs Miss State wasn't pretty. Idk much about McMillon. Cowan and Benton had good springs, but Davis still hasn't developed to the level expected. Moody is an unknown until fall camp. Knowing the playbook well is especially important at ILB.

We needed more ILBs this past cycle. That being said, that 3* ILB we signed is a stud. Had he been found out earlier, he'd have been a top 150 national 4* guy. Heard a story recently about a friend of mine sitting around in T-town on NSD with John Garcia. Garcia got a call from an assistant at ARK. The assistant asked Garcia where Moody was signing and what he'd heard (was the #1 LB on Ark's board). He was very nervous because Clemson and Bama had found out about him. Was wanting to know what happened with Peterson and the other Ga. LB that signed with UGa (name escaped me). When Garcia told him they weren't going to Bama, the Ark assistant started going off. "How is a top LB not going to Bama!?!?" "So now they're going to get Moody, huh?" They were crushed when he signed with us.
I know I may sugar coat our own guys sometimes, but we'll see what happens with Moody sooner rather than later. He's a player.
