It was funny as hell but I thought since the joke was made at LSU fan's expense that you were screwed.

LINK ]Two visits on deck for 5-star OL Darnell Wright

quote:

Five-star OT Darnell Wright has kept a low profile this offseason while he works out and stars throwing the shot put (his personal record is 53’ 8”) for Huntington, W.V. With track and field season coming to a close for him this weekend at the state tournament, Wright is starting to turn his focus towards the summer and gearing up for football season. The coveted offensive tackle took a few minutes to give the latest on his recruitment.

IN HIS OWN WORDS…

“My phone is broken right now but I was talking to coach Kap from North Carolina a lot,” Wright said. “I was with Billy (Ross, a former teammate) a lot when I was down there. We did a photo shoot but nothing really surprised me because I’ve been there a few times.

“Everything with Tennessee is good,” he said. “I’m going to get down there probably after school ends in early June. Those coaches are doing a pretty good job right now. I watched a practice when I was down there last. They were out there going hard.

Alabama was a fun trip,” said Wright. “I got to see more of all the stuff I didn’t see when I was there for a camp the time before. It was pretty fun. I got to know everybody more, especially coach Key. It was A-Day so they were playing. It was a cool atmosphere. It wasn’t a full game but they still had a lot of people there.

“I’ll take a couple more visits possibly at the end of school,” he said. “I’m going to go down to Clemson and Georgia pretty soon. I’ll try to get out to some farther schools after that. I might take one official visit this spring or summer but I’ll probably take the rest later on.

“I like coach Pittman at Georgia and coach Caldwell at Clemson,” Wright said. “They both have good programs so I want to go down there and see what it’s like.”

RIVALS’ REACTION…

Wright isn’t close to a commitment right now and stopped short of naming an outright leader at this point but Tennessee seems to be in the driver’s seat.

Alabama did a great job when he was on campus and North Carolina has some strong relationships with Wright and his family.

The Clemson and Georgia visits could end up being important and are worth keeping an eye on.

Note: Hank South, in his latest recruiting chat, named Darnell Wright as one of the Bama CB predictions that he's closest to making.

LINK ]Alabama in top 2 for wide receiver target

John Metchie is near the top of UA's WR board.
quote:

Welcome to SEC Country’s daily Roll Tide-ings, a rundown of everything happening in Alabama Crimson Tide recruiting with Chris Kirschner. In this edition, we talk the latest with one of Alabama’s top wide receiver targets.

John Metchie is a name for Alabama fans to know

John Metchie has had an interesting path to being one of the nation’s top wide receivers in the 2019 class. Metchie was born in Taiwan then moved to Ghana and then Canada where he was until his freshman year of high school at St. James (Hagerstown, Md.).

Metchie, a 4-star prospect, is one of the Crimson Tide’s top targets at wide receiver. Alabama happens to be in good shape to land his commitment when he makes his decision near the start of his senior season.

The state of Maryland’s No. 6 overall prospect hasn’t been to Tuscaloosa before, but he’s ‘definitely’ going this summer, whether that’s an official or unofficial visit.

“Right now, I don’t really have a list of favorite schools, but I would say that it’s Alabama and Penn State at the top,” Metchie told SEC Country. “Those two, specifically, it comes down to the relationships I have there with the coaching staff. I am close with [wide receivers coach Josh] Gattis at Alabama and [Penn State wide receivers] Coach [David] Corley. Those relationships are on the next level in my recruitment.”

Metchie’s relationship with Gattis dates back to when the Alabama assistant was coaching receivers at Penn State. The 6-foot, 185-pound prospect was one of Gattis’ top targets for the Nittany Lions, and he’s now a top target for him with the Tide.

“Now that he’s at Alabama, I still have a great relationship with Coach Gattis,” Metchie said. I’ve also built a strong relationship with Coach [Mike] Locksley, too. Coach Gattis was recruiting me very hard at Penn State, and that hasn’t changed now that he’s at Alabama. I talk to him pretty much every other day.”

The nation’s No. 41 wide receiver said in addition to speaking with Gattis every other day, he’s also talking the same amount to Locksley. Metchie said Gattis and Locksley see him being a versatile receiver who can line up in the slot and on the outside.

Not only is Metchie talking with Gattis and Locksley at Alabama, but he’s also speaking to Tide quarterback commit Paul Tyson. Tyson, who along with 5-star tackle Pierce Quick, is one of the team’s best peer recruiters.

“Paul has just been telling me that it’s the place to be,” Metchie said. “If I would go there, it would be something special. He's trying to get me to come down there to see how great of a place it is.”

And, something that I think shows Metchie’s legitimate interest in Alabama, he’s watched both Tyson’s and Taulia Tagovailoa’s film and think both are “extremely special.”

Metchie, who has been clocked at 4.45 seconds in the 40-yard dash, thinks the current quarterback competition in Tuscaloosa between Jalen Hurts and Tua Tagovailoa is a great problem for Alabama to have.

And it’s one that makes him believe that if he did go to Alabama next season, he would be guaranteed at least one year with either Hurts or Tagovailoa who he considers both excellent quarterbacks.

Metchie also likes how Alabama has developed its wide receivers over the years whether it was Julio Jones or Amari Cooper or Calvin Ridley. Two of those former wideouts happen to be Metchie’s favorite players at the position.

“Calvin Ridley was my favorite college receiver, and it was Amari Cooper before him,” Metchie said. “I definitely like the way Alabama builds receivers, so that’s a big thing for me.”

Penn State has been viewed as the favorite because of all the trips he has taken to State College, Pa., but Metchie said he’s “strongly considering Alabama as much as I am Penn State.”

Why? “There’s so much competition there,” Metchie said. “I love to compete, so I feel like why not go to the most competitive program in the country? I think that’s the biggest reason for my interest in Alabama.”

Position clarification for Devonta Lee

Last week, we wrote about Devonta Lee, a 4-star wide receiver from Amite (La.) High School. Lee is one of the team’s top targets in the 2019 class and has the versatility to play receiver or safety in college.

In that story, we mentioned that Alabama also likes him at safety. After talking to a source, [Who, Speigelman?] it seems like that interest in Lee on the defensive side is legit. And it seems like the team currently likes him more at safety than wide receiver.

Just last year, Slade Bolden, a 3-star athlete from Louisiana, was recruited to play slot wide receiver for the Tide only to be moved to safety [likely temporary] when he got to Tuscaloosa. So, just because the team may like Lee more at safety right now, it doesn’t mean that playing receiver down the line for the Tide would be out of the question.
>>> Highlights - hudl

ETA: I asked Kirschner about his confidence level that Bama likes Lee better on defense, and he said, "My source would know."

Note: Bama's does like Lee as a safety too, but the writer is speculating that Alabama may like him more on defense. Devonta Lee's words:
quote:

"Talking to coach Saban, we had a nice talk. Talking about how I’m going to play, what I’m going to play, this and that. I can play both sides of the ball. He said I’m a great tackler, and he likes the way I intercept the ball, and stuff like that. Wherever they put me I’m going to play. I can play both sides. I love defense too, and offense. You’ve got to be dominant, got to be a playmaker on both sides.

Note: Hank South, in his latest recruiting chat, named Devonta Lee as one of the Bama CB predictions that he's closest to making.

BPM. When are we setting up the draft?

I'll be in a black hole from ~10 Jun until ~6 Jul. After that, I'm clear.

Hank South CB'd 2020 RB Kendall Milton to Alabama a while back. Milton is the #9 ranked player overall in next year's class and his father played high school football with Tosh Lupoi. Kendall is also friends with Najee Harris.

Three-Point Stance: Raiding Florida; Must-gets; Saban on target

Rivals.com National Recruiting Director Mike Farrell’s thought-provoking Three-Point Stance is here taking a look at who raids the state of Florida the most, five must-get commitments for certain schools and why Nick Saban is right.

1. GOING AFTER THE SUNSHINE STATE

Rounding out the look the big four talent producing states, let’s take a look at who raids the state of Florida the best from out of state. The Sunshine State produces as much talent, if not more, than any other state in the country so luring recruits away is crucial for many schools.

These numbers include IMG Academy prospects who are considered Florida prospects since they play their final year or two in the Sunshine State.

Here’s who does it the best:

1. Auburn – The team that raids the state of Georgia the best also wins the battle for Florida with 18 four- or five-stars since 2013, just beating out Ohio State. Yes there are some duds in here (Byron Cowart) but there are also some impact guys like Ryan Davis. Auburn recruits very well out of state obviously.

2. Ohio State – The Buckeyes have secured 17 four- or five-stars since 2013, which is beyond impressive considering the distance and weather factors. Urban Meyer is the best head coach recruiter in the game and guys like the Bosa brothers have made Ohio State a perennial power.

3. Alabama – You’d think Alabama would be a bit higher but with 15 four- or five-stars since 2013, it has hit the state hard. Calvin Ridley and others are key contributors on the roster and ‘Bama is always a threat for top Florida kids.

T-4. Clemson – The Tigers have landed 14 four or five stars from Florida with two already in the 2019 class. CJ Spiller started it all, at least in my opinion, and they have been a name to recognize for big-time prospects in Florida ever since.

T-4. Georgia – This number, also 14 four or five stars since 2013 with one already in 2019, should increase as Kirby Smart takes Georgia recruiting to the next level. It’s hard enough to defend Georgia but to also dip into Florida and lure some top talent makes this number even more impressive.

6. Notre Dame -- There is a drop off from Clemson and Georgia down to nine for Notre Dame, but it’s still an impressive number considering geography and weather and other factors, including academic restrictions. The ACC deal was supposed to help Notre Dame hit the Southeast and it has worked to some extent.

2. FIVE MUST-GET FIVE-STARS FROM 2019

Some schools can afford to miss out on a five-star or two while others have some must-get prospects in this class. Here are five different five-stars that are must gets for certain programs this year.

1. Darnell Wright, Tennessee – The Vols have a solid lead for Wright, the No.2 player in the country, and would love to pair him with Wanya Morris as bookend tackles. Landing a top five prospect would be a big deal for Jeremy Pruitt and his new staff and would send a message that 2020 could be even better. They can’t afford to lose this lead.

2. Derek Stingley Jr., LSU – Some think Stingley is the best athlete in Louisiana since Odell Beckham and between the reputation as DBU and the need to keep top talent at home, he’s a must get for Ed Orgeron, who will be under fire a bit if recruiting doesn’t improve along with on-field results.

3. Devyn Ford, Virginia Tech – Penn State is the other finalist and we’ll know the answer this Friday, but the Hokies need to keep this top 10 talent at home. There was a time where Virginia Tech landed elite running backs with ease, but those days appear to be gone and that will continue if they lose out on Ford.

4. Trey Sanders, Florida – His brother is a Gator and that connection alone means he’s a must-get for Florida. Name the last great Gators running back. I’ll wait for your answer. Sanders is an elite talent and could do many things to help fix the Gators offensive woes.

5. Zacch Pickens, South Carolina – A big-time in-state defensive lineman, Pickens is a guy the Gamecocks need to keep. After losing Xavier Thomas last cycle after having the initial lead, they can’t afford to lose Pickens as everyone else comes charging.
