Each Friday, SEC Country will review the week that was in Alabama recruiting. That includes an overview of the current commitments, the top remaining targets and what could be in store next for the Tide.

Alabama has laid the foundation for what should be a top-5 recruiting class in 2019. Over the next few months, the coaching staff will attempt to keep some of the nation’s top prospects in-state and add championship-level talent to the roster.

The Tide’s 2019 recruiting class, which is up to 12 commitments, could have as many as 27 or 28 players come National Signing Day in February.

Alabama recruiting: Where it ranks

Alabama’s 2019 class is ranked No. 1 in the SEC and No. 1 nationally, according to the 247Sports composite. All of the Tide’s 12 commitments are rated as 4-star prospects or higher. The team has one 5-star commit, tackle Pierce Quick.

Nathan Pickering, a 4-star defensive end from Seminary (Miss.) High School, is one of Alabama’s top defensive end targets in the 2019 class. He recently told SEC Country that Alabama and LSU are two schools guaranteed to receive official visits this fall.

“Alabama is a great school that has a great football team, of course, but not only that, they are very interested in getting you a degree,” Pickering said. “When I went up there for the first time, I actually had a chance to meet with the engineering dean. That was great to know that they would focus on my degree and football.”

I couldn’t make a prediction right now on Pickering, though, because from talking with other sources, he’s all over the place with his recruitment and his group of favorite schools.

I do know that it’s a good thing Alabama is one of two schools guaranteed of an official visit, so that tells you that the interest level on his end is legit. I also know that the Tide are recruiting Pickering as a major priority, so he knows where he stands with the team.

Pickering isn’t planning on making a decision until January at the earliest.

2. THE STATE OF KENTUCKY WILL HAVE ANOTHER GOOD WEEK

There were only a handful of prospects from the state of Kentucky at last week’s Columbus stop of the series, but that didn’t stop several from putting on quality performances, including wide receiver MVP winner Wandale Robinson.

The Bluegrass State will be better represented this week in Nashville and players like Milton Wright will surely be expected to impress once again. Seven of the state’s top 10 players are expected to be in attendance, including Rivals100 Michigan commit Stephen Herron, four-star Notre Dame defensive tackle commit Jacob Lacey and three-star Alabama offensive line commit Tanner Bowles. Even if half of the state’s stars live up to their billing it will be another good week for the state.
